Doesn't have Google your phone number yet? Don't worry, you are the next one.

I have a google account, used only for google + and to register my site to some directories. I don't send any emails from it.

What I do? I use daily my account and post on google+, and now, google force me to give my phone number, otherwise I don't have access to my account.

Google invented this, and I'm sure they do it, only to have the bigest phone book in the world:

"We've detected unusual activity on your account. To immediately restore access to your account, choose how to verify your account."

Probably, some of you have received the same message from google.
Did you give or not, your phone number to Google?
If not, did you receive the google account access, at the end?

I do, if people don't have a separate business phone number. My phone number is unlisted and the last thing I want is Google selling it to businesses they think appropriate to the information they've accumulated on me.

I'm already bombarded with advertising everywhere I turn; I certainly don't intent to empower Google with the ability to make it even worse.

Google periodically asks me for my phone number, but there is usually an option to skip it (very small near the bottom of the page).

Personally, I think it's too nosy. It's none of their business what my phone number is. All big organisations do the same sort of thing, whether it's government agencies, political parties or giant corporations; they'll always keep pushing for more and more to get everything their own way. How long before it seems normal that they demand a stool sample and an account of all your previous sexual partners? No doubt there would still be some who'll say "if you've got nothing to hide, then what's the problem?"

I can read it, but in the below google message (I copied the all web page, no other information or small text in it), the phone number is mandatory.
If you don't give it, you can't access your gmail account.

        Verify your account

We've detected unusual activity on your account. To immediately restore access to your account, choose how to verify your account.
        Verification Options
        Text Message
Google will send a text message containing a verification code to your mobile phone.

        Voice Call
Google will make an automated voice call to your phone with a verification code.

        Country

        Mobile phone company

        Phone Type
        Mobile Landline Other

        Phone number
        Email address

If you're having trouble receiving a verification code, learn more about your support options.

Important: Google will never share your number with other companies or use it for marketing purposes.

I have three account two of them are old and I can always skip. But with the new one no skip option so they asked several times and I give my number to them every time. Why are they asking again and again?

What, no skip options with new accounts.
If that is true I wouldn't use google.

I think they know enough about us already
without getting our phone numbers, too.

There's no way I would give them mine.

I just gave them a Rejection Hotline phone number. Think I'll be in trouble when they find out?*

*Try that at your own risk. I didn't. Probably fraud or some weird crap like that.

I wonder how many give Google the phone number for Yahoo, Microsoft, the White House, FTC, police department, zoo, throwaway numbers, etc.

Personally, I have not given Google my number.

If you're paranoid about giving your phone number, then you can buy phone verified gmail accounts and use it to create google plus profiles. Last time I checked the price, it was something like $5 for 100 accounts. So its dirt cheap. And as internet marketers, multiple accounts is a common thing. We should be getting used to it.

      @Samrath Gupta
It is the same account. You authenticate once for both services.

      @dmister and @Samrath Gupta
As I told before there are NO skip button or link. Please read what I wrote in a previous message.

If you use from time to time your email, google probably don't ask the phone number.
But if you post daily on google+ and you are included in more than 1000 persons circle (more than 1k follow you), in this way, google can force you to give the phone number.

I often get this when I sign into Gmail and there is always a tiny skip button in the bottom right hand corner, but it is annoying! I don`t want to give Google my phone number.

If you really don`t want you could try giving an old number on a very old phone or you could try just using a random number instead!

PS I am a super duper warrior as I read the small print!
