The secret strategy to making/saving money.

Okay, here's something I actually made up a while back that seemed like an amazing and unique way to save/make money.

I used to play video games heavily when I was a kid.. heck I still play video games everyday.

Above anything else, I found that leveling my character was the most fun. And then leveling my skills.

So, I'm working on a strategy to make earning money similar to that of leveling up.

Sounds weird right? Well it works.

Here's what I want you to do.

Go and grab a pen and paper (IMO it's more fun in physical format).

Then I want you to write down a simple leveling system. Nothing that's going to overwhelm you, keep it basic.

Here's one that I made specifically for this post:

Now the point of this is to help you push yourself towards progression, you can write out the levels however you want, but it's more fun when it's easier to level, that way you don't feel like you are grinding all day.

Once you get to the stars you can award yourself with a prize. Usually I do something simple, like a candy bar, going out to dinner, watching a movie, or something like that.

Okay now here's my favorite part.

Once you reach level 120 (that may take a while depending on your level difference) you can "reborn" your level system. What this means is that once you hit level 120, you still get to keep your money, but you can go back to level 1 and start over. This time around you should be able to reach level 120 (or whatever level you setup) much faster.

It's a really fun strategy that I've been using for a while now and it's helped me earn over $70,000 in 2011.

Tip: Make it fun for you, don't use this exact strategy if it doesn't sound fun. Just work around it and see what you'll be more interested in working towards. Maybe level 120 could be that new car you were looking at?

That's not half bad for people in my generation and yours. I tend to think of lots of things in terms of games, too. I like the strategy!

If you've ever played a MMORPG or a FPS game you'll definitely get the idea down pretty quick.

My personal level system gets a little tougher as I reach level 70. Once I hit level 70, it takes roughly about the same time from 1-70 as it does from 70-80, that's because by that point my goals and earnings are so much higher, it's pretty easy to reach my those earnings.

I may even think up some type of serious leveling system that could keep everyone motivated to pushing further.

          Few "people" might.

But that is why few people are "business owners".

Business owners will and do, maybe not like a game but they set targets, meet them and set new ones.

Laying out goals and when you will reach them is part of a good business plan.

Oh yea definitely. The strategy can be used for almost anything, even a simple goal.

    Think about this.

You could take this same strategy and use it for losing/gaining weight/muscle. You could do that by counting calories, miles ran, weights lifted, pounds lost/gained, or anything else

    Justin....

I love this post! I used something very similar as this when I was on weight watchers and it really worked so well!

I too have been a gamer all my life (although more retro-gamer than MMORPG) but still the point is that you could turn any daunting project into a fun game with a system like yours and really look forward to WORK!

Please post any other variations that you think would be helpful....I love it!

As long as you understand the concept, you'll have a great experience with it.

I think it would be awesome to create some type of system that could truly track all of this data.. I may look into platforms that track paypal, clickbank, peerfly, cj.com, and etc. earnings to see if it's possible.

Could you imagine a platform that could take all of your earnings, add them up and rework them into experience points to leveling up I think that would be wicked.

To go ever further, it would be great to be able to add actions automatically, like the amount of forum posts you have, goals you've met, sales you've acquired, traffic you've sent, etc.

Hey Justin, I just might try this. I actually kind of do this at work already. I have a spreadsheet where I list my daily tasks and give a point for each one I complete. There are about 15. The goal is to beat my total from the previous week. It's kind of silly but it keeps me from dying of boredom. (If anybody from work ever sees this, I'll shoot myself!)

When I first got into IM, I joined The Keyword Academy so I could start learning how to do things. I didn't stick with them for very long because they asked their members to write at least 4 articles a day, every day, for 3-6 months. That's overkill to me.

But I bring them up because they have a neat tool that you could use to track your words. It was run on the honor system, but at the end of every day (or each time you wrote an article), you went and put the number of words in that you typed. It logged it by the day and then tracked it over time. Each time you go to a plateau, say 10K words, 100K words, 250K words, etc, you got a nifty badge in their forums.

They also tracked income in a similar fashion, except you have to actually submit screen shots of income statements, and then they give you a badge at certain levels there, too.

I think you could take their system, enhance it, and build it into what you're describing here.

Well, I'm NOT in your generation but basically, that is the strategy I've used (layed out a bit differently) for years to help businesses increase sales.

As a matter of fact, I'm helping a couple of businesses right now with it.

    It does work.

Gradient challenges that seem more like goals to obtain for rewards work much better than pushing people toward some target. It has to be an increase but not so much as to overwhelm, as you mentioned.

Very well done in stating it in terms your generation can absorb and apply.

You are wise beyond your years, Justin.

    Hi Justin,
Have you ever been on Empire Avenue? You would rock at it. It's a combination of a game but also Social Media connecting. You actually get points for how many times you post on the various SM channels. Actually the points don't count for anything but it does help me stay focused on meeting my own SM goals.

Brilliant system. Thanks for sharing. I love it and will use it for sure.

    Hi Justin,

Great post. This is the basic 'token economy' within behavioural psychology which teaches that encouragement through reward enables positive behaviour to be repeated, thus forming positive habits. It is certainly a worthwhile method for setting targets in this way.

I wonder if you (or anybody) could write a script that would enable somebody to buy into this for their list-building. It could be great for a big list owner to train others in list-building and to mail out to their own list, with guaranteed clicks, as their students progress through the levels, thus giving a bonus hit of new subscribers!

    Just a thought!

      Heya Paul,

      Ah yea, great post.

Reward definitely gets people into a positive mindset to actually achieve goals, that's why there are so many people who play games like World of Warcraft and as soon as a new upgrade/expansion comes out, everyone gets back into the game and plays hardcore until it's complete. Imagine if they put that motivation into this business, they'd be rich.

As for writing a script, I am actually thinking of how this can be done in multiple avenues as it would be a really fun way to build motivation in a community and also help people become successful.

      Kyle,

Yea I definitely feel that this can be used for both beginners and advanced marketers. If you've ever played any type of game where you have to level up in order to reach a certain attachment, armor, weapon, ability, etc. you'll have an even more exciting time with this strategy.

      Good luck on your ventures!

The reason I like this is that you are rewarded for taking small steps. Many people think that they are only successful when they have $100 dollar days a month after starting their business.

However, this makes every goal (dollar by dollar) tangible. It is realistic. I think I might actually try this. Thanks for sharing it!

Yea I preordered Diablo 3 but decided to pass on it because I know I'll get addicted.

But if we can make business/life into a game itself, maybe that can feed our addictions

I wonder if someone could use this same strategy and use it as a way to build their self esteem.

So for example, you give yourself some type of credits for being happy? And then everytime you reach a certain level you get something in return (something that would then even make you happier).
