I never saw the point in Elance. Why would I want to bid on a job with my own money when I'm trying to earn money.

As a 16 year old kid...I'm not sure where to send you. If you're in the US, it's a little harder to make money online because you have to be 18 for so much stuff. If you're not, you can give vWorker a shot.

I'd also check out the offline forum here at the WF. There are a TON of ideas you could use without having to be online and get paid cash for, meaning no one takes a % of your profits. =)

I hire on Elance and it works well, although have a profile to do work never actually bid even though get lots of requests.

It does depend on your skills, so just look at the jobs that seem to crop up quite often that you think you could do, data entry sounds a good one, and start bidding, optimize your profile so people can also find you when looking for these things and you should do ok

You don't pay to bid on Elance, you bid what you will do the job for as a one off or hourly rate, which means you earn that much should you get the gig, otherwise it would be pretty pointless.

Incorrect. You need to use credits to place a bid on Elance, and they aren't free.

You get so many credits a month Free so they are, otherwise you need to be a premium member but that is not essential, as long as you don't don't just want to spam every listing, it is a simple way to keep control over peoples activity and makes sense.

You get like 10-15 free a month. For one of the few good jobs on there, that won't get your listing anywhere near the top. So yeah, I guess if you want to chase menial work forever, you can get by without paying anything.

The boy is 16 and trying to earn some extra cash, doesn't have much expertise and for free he gets 15 credits, that is 15 bids if he uses them right he could get a few small gigs a week he not going to be competing with the big design companies on there that have top skills, the type of work he be bidding on most of the people will be in the same boat.

If he does OK then I am all for paying $40 for up to 60 credits but he doesn't need that to start with, or even the $10 plan for 30.

I simply pointed out that you don't strictly need to pay for everything, just understand what you are doing, and your bid has no more weight because you are a paid member, it very similar to forums like these, I am a Free member but just use it to offer advice, I am not going to pay to give the same advice, yes I have restrictions but that doesn't bother me, I pay for other membership sites where I see more need, some people see a need to be a paid member on here and if it returns on their investment then that is a wise decision, but it is not essential.

I believe you must be 18 to work on elance. Most sites require you to be be a legal adult if you are collecting money from others.

To be specific to your question, data entry sounds good.

No, but I'm hiring on elance. Good place.

Not sure what the requirements are but going the no thinking route won't make you money. You want to make money online, it's going to be hard, mentally most of all.

This one is definitely prone to backfiring on you though. Especially if you are not up front with the client and make it seem like you are going to be doing the work yourself.

I'm promoting my Video editor services on eLance and it's been great so far. I am working on $150 project now that doesn't involve that much work (just a lot of rendering and uploading).

I used to offer my services on Fiverr but $5 ($4) isn't just worth my time. I also have to say that I'm professional video editor in real life so 80 percent of the stuff is super easy for me, only thing I have to care about if the value/time ratio is good.

I have tried to work on Elance but never had any success, not even one bite! I wish it had the kind of traffic that Fiverr does.

Elance is great, I've been using it as a buyer for the last 3 years and have no complaints. It has only excelled my business, it was my 1st experience to the freelance world. But now with more sites like fiverr on the rise and crowdspring which I personally think is a 2012 version of elance. I feel there are many better options for the buyer which can save them a lot of money in the long run.

For a seller looking to make money on elance I would say things are all gravy. There are contractors banking it in left and right on there though. You could make $1 million in the year if you really put your mind to it ! The trick is you gotta make yourself look attractive. Be very descriptive on the services you offer, take a look at the other top sellers in the categories you wish to list in and pretty much make your page look not the same but better..... Then you can't just kick back waiting for jobs to come knocking at the door, you have to be actively bidding for jobs and don't use some generic proposal. Take the time to understand the potential client and their needs. Also if they reply back, don't take forever to respond. People are looking to get things done ASAP!!!

So my friend, if you can follow simple steps you will be on your way to the bank and no time.

That's exactly why i don't use those sites to outsource anymore...

As many people have said Elance and websites like it can be tough to get descent work from because of the competition and because you have pay some money in order to get work from clients.

Try looking in Craigslist as people put some data entry jobs or even article writing jobs that you can handle. Hope that helps!

    I'm working on Elance.
Based on my experience, the easiest the work the highest the competition.
Therefore, the easiest is actually not easy.

I never tried elance, but I am using odesk and vWorker, and as the others said the easiest job you can find is data entry, but if you want to earn more, you should try learning some HTML and PHP or maybe some desgn with Photoshop.

Getting a job on Elance is not very easy, there's a lot of competition but if you decide to go that route make sure you fill out your profile completely. Also most buyers prefer contractors with experience and feedback so when applying mention that you're new to Elance but you have experience in the type of job you're applying for. Also write individual proposals for each project and explain why you're the best candidate for the job. That will increase your chances of being selected as the project winner.
