Why aren't more people using Shutterstock?

After recently reading the thread on copyright concerns with Pinterest, it got me thinking about how many websites (IM and otherwise) I still come across with images that are clearly ripped off from Google images and in some cases even still watermarked!

I'm still consistently amazed at how many people are doing this, especially when you can get your images, completely legit, from Shutterstock with their $249 one month subscription.

Stock Photos | Shutterstock: Royalty-Free Subscription Stock Photography & Vector Art

For $249, you can get a one month subscription that allows you to download 25 images a day under their standard license. That means with a single month membership you could download yourself a library of 750 high quality, high resolution royalty free images, which you then have standard rights to use.

I mean really, 750 legit images, of your choice, is a lot to work with for that price. Go two months and you've got 1500, etc, etc.

I just don't see any reason why anyone even half serious about making money on the web would take the risks associated with grabbing images off of Google when this option is out there.

I know $249 might seem like a lot to some, but when you consider that for many IMers, 750 good images would be enough to serve their IM needs almost indefinitely, it really is a pittance.

I just wanted to throw that out there in case anyone wasn't aware of how cheap these plans can be. For anyone grabbing images off the big G, do yourself a favour and build yourself a legit library through one of these sites. It doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Did you even bother to hover over the link? There is no affiliate code. It's a clean, straight link to their subscription options page.

Please at least take the half a second necessary to examine the link URL before taking 40 seconds to write a post accusing someone of breaking forum rules.

I'm just trying to bring attention to something some people might not be aware of that could save them headaches in the long run.

...& all Mark is doing is telling you what this thread looks like.

Anyway, by reading this thread it does actually sound like you are promoting this photoshop site & that being said, IMers know how to proof read, so why would they stick around to to play at detective especially if like me they aren't interested in spending hundreds for pics that cost peanuts to create.

I personally think spending hundreds of $s a month on some photo/image store is totally insane... but hey! we are all entitled to our opinion.

Each to their own as they say.

          Really?

For one shutterstock is a very well known site and for professional pictures $250 is CHEAP! I know photographers that charge over $500 per hour.

But yeah... you're totally right stealing other peoples work from google images and infringing on copyrights is such a better way of running a business.

I agree with the OP, even if it's not shutterstock there are numbers of other sites out there people should be using.

Running and growing your business ethically is what separates professionals from the rest.

When I land on a site that has spammy watermarked photos I clearly know they aren't making money with their business because they can't even afford to drop $250 to get some photos for their site...

I didn't say anything about stealing other people's images mister.
            Personally I use stock.xchng
I also have a polish photographer I can turn to for any photo design (free).
If you pay that much for photos that's your business.

              It's simple math, really...

If you can plan your work and get 750 usable images in your month, that's less than 35 cents ($0.35) per image. Or three for a dollar, if you prefer.

Depending on your needs, it is possible to get high quality images for the price of an email - think "public relations office"...

Looks like the OP is getting bashed here for asking a legitimate question. Gotta love the Warrior Forum sometimes.

I don't use Shutterstock for the simple reason that I started using iStockPhoto first and haven't found a reason to move away from it. That, and I forgot Shutterstock existed LOL. Have you compared the two to see which is better? Since you've reminded me, I'll take a look tonight and see what Shutterstock is like.

I personally like being able to load my account on iStockPhoto for $10 and get up to 10 pictures for that price. I don't like sinking $250 into anything at all....

Yep. I've been reading this forum long enough to know how it is sometimes. Thanks for the defense.

Shutterstock, as far as I know, is owned by Istockphoto, and many of the same images can be found on both, but often a good bit cheaper on shutterstock for whatever reason.

You're right that loading up can be great for time-to-time image grabbing, I've done it that way myself too. However, in the long run, the cost of getting 750 images on istock piece by piece is much higher than through a subscription.

With a little foresight and targeting based on what niches you're in/plan to be in, a single month of shutterstock images (750) can keep you going almost indefinitely.

I can download the same amount from a different site for only $4.95 per month plus can download even more just by referring new members.

Most people here aren't going to want to spend $249 per month on photos.

Can you post a link to the site? If the quality is there, that's a great deal, but all the really low cost sites I've checked out just couldn't come close to matching the quality or selection from shutterstock/istockphoto.

Again, I'm not suggesting people spend $249 PER MONTH on photos, I'm suggesting they may be able to spend $249 ONCE and potentially have enough images to last them for years and years.

Andy, if you'll notice I wrote people HERE... lol. A large portion of the membership here is lucky to be making any money at all, from what I can tell.

The site I use is Kozzi. I'll post both my affiliate and a straight link for those who hate using affiliate links for some strange reason.

I can't say that they're as good as Shutterstock because I haven't used that site. I can say that for the price, I've found a ton of great photos and vector images to use.

Wow, free! I think I may be signing up, and I'll use your affiliate Thanks.

I tried to sell some photos to shutterstock once... I wasn't very successful, as none got accepted! But oh, well. As I'm not an IMer (yet, I may go into it in the future, perhaps), I don't really have use for hundreds of images, but having access to one or two select images that will not get me in trouble is great.

I do agree, that watermarked pictures are cheesey and lacks professionalism.

And, I found that most of the images I want to use are from Getty. Their prices for one image are astronomical. I stay away from celebrity niches for that reason.

      Hey Joe,
That's awesome. I've always wished I could do that but alas my camera is what you'd call garbage and my photography skills are even worse!

That being said, you might want to check out these sites, because if you're a talented photographer capable of shooting good stock quality photos, you can sign up to sell through these sites, and some people make a really pretty penny doing so.

Once again for the umpteenth time for those that don't want to read, you can sign up for ONE month. That's a single payment of $249 that gets you 750 professional quality, royalty free images, with all waivers and releases taken care of, in massive resolution. Not $3000. $249.

All your image needs, potentially indefinitely for some, taken care of for one single payment of $249.

And once again, yes, I'm astounded people think this to be too much to pay.

I don't think he's suggesting you sign up for an entire year though. He's saying that a one month subscription will allow you to download 750 images. Assuming you can plan ahead and know what you need then that's pretty good value really.

Some people download from Google Images out of pure ignorance and some do so with full knowledge of the consequences - but like smoking - they think "no one will know - it will happen to someone else" (being caught out).

People can get caught and often do - it's SO MUCH EASIER than you could ever imagine for a copyright holder to find out who is using his or her image than you could ever imagine! And so much more damaging for you if you are caught.

Why do people do it? Because not everyone can afford those "stock" sites - specially when they need quite a large number of images.

I always recommend the Public Domain - it's almost limitless and is free for any reason you can imagine with no threats of copyright owners suing you!

I think that might be a good idea if you are making lots and LOTS of money, but for most of us $500 is a lot for something we can just get for free.

One thing to watch out for with the really low cost/free stock sites is that a lot of them don't require uploaders to have proper releases, and the burden is on the end user to ensure they have all the necessary permissions for any given image.

This won't be true for every image, but just something to watch out for.

With Kozzi, unless they're lying to us that is, their images are done for their site and they have all model releases on file. They have a staff of photographers and graphics people so it's not just random people uploading their photos. I agree with you, though, if you use a site like that, I highly recommend not using photos of people.

Shutterstock and istock are actually big competitors. Istock is owned by Getty if I remember right, and SS bought BigStock a year or so ago. Photographers own the copyrights on their images so they often license them through multiple channels if they don't have an exclusivity agreement anywhere. I've sold through all of them for ~6 years and ShutterStock is my favorite. Dreamstime is a close second. SS seems to attract more high end clients.

Lot of free alternatives to shuttershocks overpriced images, that's why I personally don't use them, but whatever works for the person is the way to go.

I'm currently using iStockphoto, but I'll give Kozzi a look, as well. I do wonder how iStockphoto would know whether a website bought its images or just stole them, as they have no idea what websites I put their photos on.

Of course, as a lawyer I'm a bit more cautious about copyright infringement than most. If I get a nasty e-mail challenging my use of the images, I know my butt is covered.

I use photodune now (part of envato). Inventory isn't as good but cheaper than istockphoto, especially for larger sizes.

    Nobody mentioned this:

Nobody knows which 750 images one will need over the course of a year. You don't usually plan projects several years in advance.

So chances are that most images will go waste. You really need to take the subscription yearly to actually benefit from it and $250 a month is only doable for a 7 figure marketer.

LOL, seems like this post was dug out of the archives (jumps from 2012 to 2015), but the same is still true now. Paying for images is the RIGHT thing to do. It amazes me how many Graphic Designers still try to work around the image issues, but ultimately, you should only use licensed content in your work.

The prices have changed too since this thread first appeared. $4.95 for images per month is no longer available on the site mentioned by Tina.

There are many great and free resources if you look around, but if you want to have a paid for solution where Royalty Free means just that, then it is worth checking out https://www.graphicstock.com/join/.

You pay $99 for the year with unlimited downloads. You get Vector, Illustrations and Photos included in the pricing.

The link is NOT an affiliate link, just sharing a resource I have found useful. The same company has audioblocks and videoblocks which I also use (again, $99 per year each).

    Enjoy!

This thread is why I don't license my work to online marketers. To many believe that they are entitled to get something for nothing. Yet, when it comes to their jobs, they want raises, health insurance, and retirement plans.

Why pay something when you can get it for free? There are a multitude of websites that offer stock photos for free under the cc0 license. Here are some of my favorites:

    Pixabay

    Freeimages

    morgueFile

    Wikimedia

    Magdeleine

    Public Domain Archive

    Kaboompics

You see now? I was not the guy who brought this thread up. I was trapped too before. I put my post here just to let you know. Now let this thread die.
      Thanks.

    Why you ask?

Cause http://Pixabay.com has several quality images for free with 'commercial use' permissions.

Also, if you search the threads here, I'm sure you can find a few threads that list more 100% free images with, and without any attribution required.

3rd, cause if you provide proper attribution, many, many more photos are available on the web, and through public domains.

And lastly, cause I am too damn cheap to pay $249 for pics, and too honest to steal anything from Google or the likes. (and quite frankly, I am deathly afraid of judges, lawyers, and prison rapists, not my thang.)

I agree. Why pay so much money for images (despite their high quality) when you can download them from Pixabay for nothing? I have used a number of these - one of which was so stunning I sent them a donation (or 'bought them a cup of coffee'). I was happy to upload a dozen of my own images taken on holiday in Australia which I hope other Pixabay users will like and use on their own websites.

I've just run a quick Google for 'free high quality images' and found plenty of options so take a look and see what you can find.

I would second the advice to stay away from photos with people included if you are using free image sharing sites. I think for most people they don't think about the risk and just scrape the image and post without thinking twice.
