How to write a headline that increases your open rate by 346%

....there you go, I just did it lol

Actually, what I wanted to demonstrate is if you use curiosity, it will increase your open rate 10 fold, tease them with what they will discover in your email, or on your sales page.

Secondly, if you use exact figures, that will help also.

Examples: Made $534 in one day
Lost 12lb in 2 weeks
Got 286 opt ins in on24 hours

Now, I'm no copywriter, so I bet you can come up with better ones.

C'mon warriors, I know you lot can do much better than me

    286 opt in a day! That's cool.

Do you find though, that the curiosity you have peaked needs to relate to the offer directly? We can all think of headlines that will bring a flood of opens, but viewers get fed up with bait and switch, I think.

How do you write a headline, like the one you wrote, when you can't actually prove such a stat with your offer?

      Hey Paul

In the IM world, we are used to (and probably getting sick of) headlines like "I screwed up" and headlines which make false claims. However, some of the 'rubber necking' tactics work well outside of the IM niche, as long as they are not used too often.

Regarding my examples like "lose 12lb in X amount of days", as long as they are true, they help you get your emails opened / forum posts opened etc.

      Cheers

"Open Rates" are over rated , "Conversions" are not.
Basically I would rather have a low open rate with some good conversions,
Rather than a high open rate with no conversions because I gave someone
    High hopes.

A little hype is fine as long as you can deliver & convert.

Agreed, although of course if they don't open the email, pretty hard to convert! I do see what you're getting at though, if you're talking about volume, then it's no good if they are not targetted visitors.

    Phil, Good job.

Actually your headlines have something in addition to curiosity that helps make them work. Each one has an implied benefit. If the reader will read this article, the reader will learn how to...

    -Increase open rate by 346%
    -Make $534 in one day
    -Lose 12lb in 2 weeks
-Get 286 opt ins in on24 hours

People want the implied benefit for themselves.

"Boy Spends 37 Minutes Talking With A Space Alien" would be a curiosity headline without any implied benefit.

Thanks Don, glad you see it that way. Actually, it reminds me that these type of headlines work well with ads, especially adwords where you are limited by the number of charaters you can use.

I would only want targeted traffic. I would take 100 targeted visits a day then 5000 crappy visits. Yes its cool to see all those visits but then its not cool when you made more money with the 100 targeted visits. If you can think of a headline like that for my niche PLEASE tell.

    You are spot on.

It is also good to have number in the headline as shown in your examples.

Email subject lines should be blind and benefit oriented to increase open rate.

Especially in this day and age when our inbox is bombarded with all sorts of emails that we have to compete with.

A headline with the word "Secret" is great, because people want to find out secrets.
Example : The Secret of making $5,234 from just one email!

    Why yes... yes you did.

I remember a specific lesson that Eben Pagan gave about headlines.

He said that in general, one of his best-performing headline formulas was:
["How to"][achieve specific result][in a short time frame][with little to no risk].

    So, for example:

    1. How To Lose 25lbs In 90 Days, Guaranteed Results Or You Get A Full Refund
    2. How To Make $99 Per Day Starting In 60 Days, Guaranteed Or Your Money Back
    3. How To Get A Girlfriend In 30 Days Or Less With No Risk Of Rejection, Satisfaction Guaranteed Or I'll Buy You A Hooker!

Etc, etc. I just made those up off the top of my head.

Oh wow, I'd forgotten about that one, yeah, I remember him using it in the context of book names. One of the best was the diet book called "Eat yourself thin"...man, I wish I had came up with that one!

Read the thread and resisted checking out the naked girl's conversion tactic...

I think this thread title works particularly well because for an instant some folk will be like "It's not possible to be greater 100%" in the same way as it's not possible to get higher than 100% in an exam.

That's what I thought but I never was any good at maths in school

LOL, yeah, it sounds like a marketing ploy, but actually, it's much simpler than that, it's a cool tactic, and then a picture of a naked girl lol. ya missing out.

But yeah, regarding the 300%, in this instance, it's talking about increasing something X 3, which gives you the 300%. Of course, I pulled that figure from the air, just to demonstrate the poiwer of using exact numbers.

    Thanks Phil,

First the science. I'd have to see the stats and evidence that using curiosity actually increases open rates 10 fold...that is fluff and hype, which is successfully used by many.

From my 45 years of experience, we've found curiosity works best when it is relevant to the target. Of course, it is assumed you are targeting your headlines to a specific niche.

Also agree with the benefit statement, or implied benefit, Teen Spends 30 Minutes with Space Alien, Now Speaks 5 Languages type thing.

Phil, I do believe curiosity is a powerful way to get attention...it is however, a less than stellar way to MAINTAIN attention, unless it is within the target's primary preoccupations ...

      Hi Gjabiz

Yeah, sorry, don't take that number too literaly, it's a figure of speech, but as I'm sure you'll agree, the use of curiosity is powerful, and also a lot of fun. I like to use it a lot in my marketing. I have to credit Travis Sago for teaching me that.

      Cheers
