Generally, Alexa ranks site based on the amount of visitors a site receives.

Simply increase your traffic and your alexa ranking will improve.

To increase your Alexa ranking you need visitors to your site who have the Alexa toolbar installed on their computers.

It's very simple: those are - by definition - the only ones whose visits to your site are relevant to the site's Alexa ranking, because without having that installed and running, they can't be measured/monitored/counted by that system.

The people who have that installed and running are nearly all internet marketers themselves, or people very closely associated with internet marketing. Nobody else, really.

In other words, it isn't indicative of "normal traffic" at all.

I can see that it might (just about) have value to someone who's selling a site or selling advertising-space on a site, and wants it to look like it has plenty of traffic (in case the buyers are a bit naive and don't know that it doesn't really mean anything else), but to anyone else, to put it bluntly, it's a bit of a waste of time.

Alexa is correct as she said above. There is a slight correlation with increase traffic with alexa rankings. But you shouldn't use the alexa free data to base your site or your competitors site "actual visits".

You should actually focus on installing "Piwik" in my opinion and tracking your traffic that way. I don't like to promote google analytics but if you would like to use that you can try that as well. Usually I tend to stay away from anything free google offers us (just me being paranoid lol).
