Newbie Tip: Why You Don't Need PDF Converters...

Buongiorno!

I recently discovered something which I wanted to share here as it's not only saved me a great deal of time, but also a fair amount of hassle. Hopefully sharing it here means that some of the newer or less experienced members of the forum will benefit and succeed that bit faster...

I actually posted it on Facebook a couple of months ago and got this response almost immediately, which made me think others might benefit on here:

Basically, when I started out online a couple of years ago, I learned from somewhere that, in order to create an eBook, I needed to get a piece of software called a PDF Converter. This takes your Word document and turns it into, yes you guessed it, a PDF that you can then sell as an eBook. Apparently the free ones would work fine... At least, that's what I was told.

That may have been true back then (although I doubt it), but I then spent two and a bit years using several PDF Converters (both online and downloadable) that didn't work. None of them (in my experience) work for internet marketers.

You see, there is a major problem with them:

When you create a link within the document that is embedded in the text like this, the links don't work once the document has been converted. This means that all those clever, subtle sentences you've written with affiliate links embedded in them won't work and so you'll lose money.

Sure, you can just put in links like this: http://www.WarriorForum.com but that's kinda ugly and breaks the flow of the document.

The solution is so simple I laughed at myself for not even looking at what was right in front of me...

If you're using Word (I'm guessing most beginners are), then go to the 'Save As' menu and instead of just saving it as a Word document, save it as a PDF.

That's literally it.

No, really, you just need to save it as a PDF in Word and all of the links - including those that are embedded in text - still work.

And that's why ya don't need PDF Converters. Turns out Microsoft has got you covered.

Hope this helps a few people. Thanks for reading.

(Incidentally, I'm sure Macs already convert PDFs perfectly while making you a coffee and telling you how great you look today, but for PC users, this tip can save a lot of hassle)

    Also another great tip.

If you don't want to use Word (which I never touch) you can use Google Docs to create PDF's really easily.

Tip #3: If you're using an older version of Word that doesn't do the PDF thing automatically, you can download a free add-on that will allow you to "print" your document into a PDF file.

CutePDF - Convert to PDF for free, Free PDF Utilities, Save PDF Forms, Edit PDF easily.

It's freeware. Just watch out for it changing your homepage and stuff.

That's one of the ones I used. It doesn't seem to convert embedded links into actual links once it's finished creating the PDF. You have to stick to raw URL links instead if you use that.

        Hmm...

Well I just created two ebooks last month using Open Office and I believe they have a combined total of around 80 links in them and I had no problem converting them and preserving the links.

In fact, that's why I used Open Office - so that there wouldn't be any problems with the hyperlinking and AT.

Another free product that is cool depending on what you are doing is fox converter. It basically adds the convert to a pdf function to your printer selection so all you need to do to convert any document to pdf is hit 'print' and then select the document you want to convert. It won't automatically save hyperlinks though....

Thanks for the tips!, that's good to know, I didn't realize links were an issue.
I did hear never to use MS Word because it creates extra characters if you copy into another software, is there other reasons you never use MS word? Like when you create content for a WP blog..do in notepad right? Why won't some not touch Word?

Some of them work fine if you do things a particular way.

When you create a link within the document that is embedded in the text like this, the links don't work once the document has been converted.
Well, there are a couple of things.

First, those PDF converters which operate as printer drivers don't get link data because... they're printers. They don't get clickable link data.

Second, if you put the ugly link in there, many of them have crappy URL parsers that won't recognise URLs which don't start with "http://" and "www." every time. I've even had some that only recognise the ".com" extension.

However, regardless, your table of contents won't be clickable and users really do like clickable contents. A lot. It's a deal-breaker for me if a PDF converter doesn't do clickable contents.

If you're using Word (I'm guessing most beginners are), then go to the 'Save As' menu and instead of just saving it as a Word document, save it as a PDF.
    Depends on your version.

    - Word 2003 or earlier doesn't have this feature at all
    - Word 2007 requires a (free) download from the Microsoft web site
    - Word 2010 has it built in as you describe

Google Docs or LibreOffice are also good options. OpenOffice.org is no longer maintained - Home » LibreOffice is the new home of that suite.

If you are using a mac, from the "File" menu, select "Print". At the bottom of the dialog box there is a PDF menu. This works in any program.

Use Google Docs or Open Office if you don't want to pay for Microsoft Office.

Cool, good to know that there's an alternative in OpenOffice.

I'd never heard of OpenOffice when I started out, and to be honest, don't consider it an option simply because I've never used it, but for those newbies that are reading this, it provides another good alternative.

I had to use PDF Converter as My MS Word keeps telling me that "this file is in use by other application or user" each time I want to convert it to PDF.

      Any help with this?

        Strange...

Not sure to be honest Matt. Out of interest, is the file also open somewhere else? Can anyone else shed some light on this one?

This is a very helpful piece of information as I immediately went into word and did not have ANY option to save as a PDF.

I have open office but I just prefer doing things in msword as its what I've been using most of my life. So I will absolutely give this a try.

OP rocks for making this thread but w/out this tip I'd be helpless.

      Thanks!

I totally agree... I do rock.

You're right, that tip makes this thread much more valuable, as I didn't know that other versions of Word didn't have that feature.

Having read all the discussion above, i would like to add that the word-processors like open office or ms word might give you an option to convert documents but apart from that basic conversion, PDF converter software offer many other functions and features.
But if you need only so much, you are good to go with the ms word add in.
