Help needed! Newbie here... have a great product, not sure of best way to test

by ccm241

I have tried searching but cant really find a direct answer on what I want to know. Seems the more I learn the more I get frustrated with all the options I read about...

In summary: I already have a product I want to sell. This product is already quite popular in another English speaking country (hint: they have kangaroos there). I have found a manufacturer and have samples sitting here in front of me that I have tested and am satisfied with. I am trying to resist my urge to set up a working ecommerce site on Shopify (or something of the like) and test my product extensively before pulling the trigger on some inventory to reduce my risk exposure as much as possible.

The problem: I'm not sure of the best way to go about this. Alot of folks suggest a simple one-column sale page packed with powerful copy and drive traffic to it the organic way. Some say all you need is a nice squeeze page with a neat video that you drive traffic to through an intense 5 day PPC campaign. Others say that if you already know the market is there, you can skip this step altogether and go right to selling.

Question: What is the best, most cost effective, method for testing a simple product offering?

Flame suit on!

This is actually one of my areas of expertise (retail marketing) .. Guess I would need a little more info. If the product is for consumers, then a sales page with a great online and offline marketing campaign (probably based around pr) I would recommend.

If a product for businesses then either advertise on LinkedIn and/or use an email scraper (I have a good one I bought through this forum) and direct email your target clients.

As a test, if a b2b product I would probably try the email campaign from a scraper or someone business list to start .. for consumers, google adwords campaigns at least give you great stats and tracking and you can cap your budget

    That's my 2bobs (20 cents) worth )

I guess it depends how locally you want to market the product.

With google adsense you can limit the geography to a point.

If you want to send me a private message with a little more info on the product I dont mind giving you a few ideas )

Mate. Just wack up a sales page and send PPC traffic to it. Just start it already. You're thinking too much. You can always control how much you want to spend on advertising. Tweek the sales page as you go along..but you have to start

Agreed. You have the right idea, you just need to follow through with the action.
Depending on the amount you're wanting to spend, starting out with $50 in ads would start you off.

So to give you guys an update, my site is basically done. In process of getting everything transferred over to my own hosting service. Do have one question though I could really use some input on.

Initially I am just doing a test here (I will not be selling physical product), only tracking click thrus to order page. Right now site is 5 pages, and the order page is one of the five pages. On the home page, I have a "order" call to action button I want people to click, bringing them to order page.

So here is question: if I cover pricing and features on home page, is it ok to use the order page for the "product coming soon!" message. Is there a better statement to make here than "product coming soon" - maybe "product currently on backorder?"

Any input appreciated... getting close to go live here! Took me a while to get out of my own head, but I think I've pushed through it.

I would put 'product launching soon'.

And then put an email opt-in form below with an irresistible call to action, like 'be one of the first to own...etc etc and also get 10% off'

So I'm assuming your product isn't ready to sell then? If it is, then I wouldn't recommend the above. Just sell it on the homage...simple 1 page sell with killer copy and video.

Go with PPC for getting quick traffic and selling of your product. Moreover, adding this also starting to build organic links from social world and social media. You can easily gather more interested customers who are willingly to buy your product online.

    start with something simple.

squeeze page to capture email - auto redirects to sales page where the only button you want them to click is the sell button.

then followup with autoresponder emails for 1 year, maybe on days 1,2,3,5,7,14,21,28,60,90,120, etc.

the sale is in the email

Wow - can't believe how many responses in such a short amount of time. Much appreciated!

The product is a consumer homegoods product that will sell for less than $30.

I know you guys are right and that the important thing is to just start. It is just so hard for the perfectionist part of my brain to let something out into the internet wild until I am 100% satisfied. As I havent done this before, it is hard!

Unfortunately, I can't post links or I woulud have provided examples of some sites I like. So, my follow up question is this:

Do you think a basic sales page packed full of good (I hope) copy (no pictures, videos, etc.) would be better or should I set it up as more of a standard website with a few pictures, maybe a place to add video later, etc.?

I have heard you loud and clear that the important thing is to just start, but which option is more suitable in everyone's more educated and experienced opionions?

Thanks again - this place is awesome!

Why not do both? Nobody's opinion will be as valuable as real world test results.

Aim to build a relationship first and your chances of selling your product will be greatly increased at the "back end"!

Depending on what niche you are in you could use PPC to drive traffic to it and get it pretty cheap if the keywords are not that competitive.

Hope you find the right path to success.

    Good luck my friend

So from what I am hearing the main goal initially should just be capturing email - worry about selling product later? This would mean I only needed one page with an email CTA right?

From researching keywords my top 3 keywords each have 100k+ monthly searches with low competition so that is probably where I would start.

If your 3 keywords are in low competition, then its must be chance to keep them high rank on Google index quickly.

Additionally, you keyword searches is 100k+ is more then enough, but please let me know this locally search ration or globally?

If you want to keep them up locally then you can use PPC and Social media promotion in organic marketing. These two strategies or techniques may be helpful to you and your keywords.

Question: What is the best, most cost effective, method for testing a simple product offering?
I know it's been said, but the best way to test a product offering is to...well...just test it.

Do you think a basic sales page packed full of good (I hope) copy (no pictures, videos, etc.) would be better or should I set it up as more of a standard website with a few pictures, maybe a place to add video later, etc.?
For a "consumer homegoods" product, pictures at the very least would I think be helpful. Videos are not a bad idea either, but I suppose it really all depends on the product itself.

Ever read the 4 Hour Workweek? Great book. In short, start your testing with some PPC. Do you want to build a customer list? Yes. BUT I wouldn't make that your priority. Instead I'd personally SELL your product and build a BUYERS list of paying customers.

Again though, just start somewhere and improve from there.

    Best,
    Derek

P.S. - PM me if you want any help with keywords. I'd be happy to offer you some free consultation there.

One of the Warriors above mentioned this...but I'll briefly extrapolate on it.

And that is...PR. I would definitely invest a little energy into drafting some press releases and getting them out there.

Writing and sending your own press release can seem daunting for most people. But like most things, it is really not very hard, once you learn how.

If I recall, you asked about how to market locally. A Press Release targeted to your local market is a FREE way to test market responsiveness.

Here's a quick Down and Dirty recipe for local PR Marketing:

1.) Identify the local media outlets you want to target (e.g. Newspapers, bloggers, radio stations).

2.) Get the Press Release contact info. Either fax number or email address. They ALL will have PR contacts. This is their lifeblood.

3.) Learn the appropriate format for your release. (Send me a PM and I will give you an example.) This part is important. Reporters can be persinikity. If you break with the accepted format, your press release might get ignored.

4.) Last, but most importantly, is your content. DO NOT just write some boring release, like "New Product Being Released". Blah, Blah, Blah.

It has to pass the "Who Cares" test, or nobody will.

        How do you do this?

Create a "story" that would be appealing, revolving around your product.

Does your product solve a big problem for people? Then write about it!
        Is it controversial?
        Is it humorous?
Does it plug into a new trend or fad?

You need an angle to make it into a human interest story.

Keep in mind, reporters searching for great stories. Every day, they need to come up with another one, and another one.

They can be your best friend, if you give them a great story.

        Hope this helps!

        Dan

I am pulling my freaking hair out over here!!! I have made about five different versions, hate all of them, and have deleted three. What a lesson in humility. Would I be a total quitter/ waste of space if I wanted to pay someone to do my first landing page here? Would be much easier to tweak once I had something to go off of.

Also, any good landing pages I see are typically ebook, dvd, webinar, etc type products... any good suggestions for consumer type products? Maybe even homegoods products?

Last, any recommendations on who I could contact to build a landing page for me for reasonable fee?

    Here's my take on it.

In any kind of business, you want your
business to not only be profitable...But
    ALSO sustainable.

If you're going to work in this market for
a long time, you're going to need to
    generate leads for your business.

That's why you collect their email
addresses. It makes your life a lot easier.

It tells you, "Hey, these are the people
interested in your solution. These are
    the people you want."

Don't go without getting their emails.

    Sincerely,

Put up a quick youtube video. You can have one made very cheaply. Put a link in the description to your squeeze page. If your keywords are getting high search - low comp. you will get traffic if your video is well optimized. You can get a good feel for the market very quickly for very little cost.

Yes, I plan to run a 6 word PPC campaign to the site for 10 days. Do you guys know of any sites or examples I could look at that would show me the proper way to do a product test like this?

If visitors click the order button, I plan on bringing them to page that says thanks for your interest, product is currently out of stock (or coming soon), please enter email to be notified when product is available. Getting the email would be a bonus, but what I'll really be looking at is how many people click order button.

Would love some input here if you have any.

There are many people who can review your product if you wish. But since you know it is very popular in other places, you can just promote it, if it isn't something which has to do with culture (or kangaroos ) why not having a success in another place too?

Build your website to promote your products. Get someone to write good content articles for you. Submit the articles, get backlinks.

Also, you can use YouTube and facebook to promote.

You can also use solo ads, swap lists, etc to get traffic.

I agree with most of the answers here. You just have to do it. It does not matter how you do it...just get it in the eyes of your potential consumers.

If you have the ad budget then magazines, infomercials, or just hire a marketing firm to do it for you.
