Hey everyone,

I'm very new to website design and I recently put up a website on Wordpress for my offline business. At the time, the domain name I wanted wasn't available, but now it is and I would like to change my site to the new domain name. Is it just a matter of buying the new domain and 301 redirecting to the new domain or is there something else I should do? Sorry for the noob question, and I appreciate any help.

You will have to move the site from the old domain to the new domain and then put a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new domain.

If your blog is on wordpress then you can book your domain name directly to wordpress dashboard with hosting or otherwise you can go through this article to know how to transfer a wordpress hosted blog to self hosted blog.

I had a very similar situation a few years ago. I just set up a 301 redirect in the Hostgator cPanel. This allowed me to keep both domains and i did not lose any of the standing the original domain had developed.

Alternatively, it's a very simple procedure to move your WP blog to the new domain name and just eliminate the first URL completely.
