New to Forum, New to IM, Commited to Success!

Greetings --

I must warn you, this will likely turn into a long post. Thank you in advance for reading any portion of it. Bonus points will be awarded to those who make it to the end. Extreme gratitude for anyone who actually writes a meaningful and useful response. I appreciate you all!

My name is Drew. For the past few weeks I have been reading as much as I can about internet marketing. I've already learned a great deal from lurking on the Warrior Forum and other blogs. I'm finally getting to the point where it all makes sense in my head, and now I'm ready to take action and begin learning from experience. I will be starting my first niche site this week!

Google's keyword tool tells me the keyword I'm targeting receives 8100 global monthly searches, 4400 local searches, and has low competition. This is a sub-niche of healthy eating.

My strategy is to build the site, SEO it, post some quality articles related to my niche and the parent niche, and use AdSense to monetize traffic. I may also attempt to work in an affiliate product with this site, once it's been up for awhile. Does that seem like a reasonable approach?

I do understand that money will not start rolling in overnight, that this is not a get rich quick business. It will take strong work ethic, resolve and perseverance. I am in this for the long haul! Initial setbacks and less than ideal results will serve as excellent learning opportunities. Success is inevitable long-term, provided I stay committed to my goals.

Please allow me to review what I think I know about IM, and also ask a few questions along the way. I don't expect anyone to answer every single question posed in this lengthy post. But please feel free to tackle one or two questions that you may be especially qualified to field. Alternatively, if you have a web link to share that may provide some insight, I'd be happy to grab some answers myself.

I will also continue to search the forums and other web resources to expand my knowledge base.

If anything I state below is erroneous, please also feel free to correct me. Without further adieu, and in no particular order:

Article Writing - Writing articles for other IMers and revenue-sharing sites like ehow.com (their former program) to earn an income. Is there anything comparable to ehow that still offers this? Is infobarrel.com any good? Are there any other avenues someone can generate passive income by writing articles? I don't think I have much interest in working as a writer for hire.

I've also read about article syndication. Is there any benefit to this if you are strictly writing articles? I [think I] already understand how this can drive traffic to a site if you are using a syndicated article as a method of backlinking.

Affiliate Marketing - Building a site designed around a specific product you intend to promote as an Amazon or Clickbank affiliate. Those seem to be the most popular two options but, of course, there are other opportunities out there too. SEO and backlinking are required.

Are these just more elaborate squeeze sites? How does one write a review about a product they've never used? Or do you actually try the products you market?

I do also understand that you could create a blog or authority site and use either to offer affiliate products to your readers after you've established a trust relationship with them.

Squeeze Sites - Landing page written in copywrite format, created for the purpose of persuading visitors to take immediate action: sign up for a list, purchase an ebook, etc. SEO is required? What about backlinks? What is the main method of driving traffic to a squeeze site? PPC?

Niche Sites - Creating a site and writing articles geared towards a very targeted topic of interest, such as fly fishing. SEO and backlinks are required.

How many posts does a 'standard' niche site have? Is adsense the primary method of earning income from such a site? Is building an e-mail list for a niche site recommended, or should that be reserved for authority sites and blogs?

Authority Sites - The impression I get is that authority sites are basically upscaled versions of niche sites. Because you are delivering a large volume of high-value content, you become regarded as an authority on a particular subject. Credibility turns into trust, which translates into opportunities for affiliate sales, self-produced product (i.e. ebook) sales, consultation fees, etc. Ads are also an option here. SEO and backlinking are required. Am I on the right track with my thinking?

Blog Sites - Creating a blog about a topic you are particularly passionate about, filling it with an enormous amount of content, and monetizing it with Ads, affiliate marketing, direct product sales, etc. Authority sites and blog sites seem similar but also different in the sense that the former attracts visitors with useful, credible content, while blogs win people over with personality. SEO and backlinking suggested but not required to create a high-ranking, profitable blog?

Backlinking - I have a general concept of how this works, but I'm not sure where to begin with this process, given what I've read about recent Google updates. Any guidance or web links you can provide on this topic would be appreciated.

What type of sites should backlinking be used for - niche, authority, review, ??

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Using specific keywords in your domain name, site description, post titles and site content to increase your search engine ranking. Observing good SEO practices will increase a site's chances of landing in one of the coveted top spots on google.

Keyword Searching - I understand that finding keywords with a good amount of exact searches and a low amount of competition is a winning formula. For the time being, I am still using google adwords keyword tool to feel my way around things.

I've seen people on WF cite the local searches number as the figure to base decisions on, not global. Why? Also, when researching keywords for niche sites, what is a reasonable amount of local monthly searches?

Google's tool provides keyword competition stats in 3 flavors: low, medium, high. What exactly do these ratings mean?

I read a comment somewhere that google's competition analysis is basically irrelevant because it doesn't asses SEO competition, just the number of sites on which your keyword appears. Is that an accurate statement? What tools do you use for keyword research? I've read a bit about Market Samurai and Long Tail Pro.

Other Online Resources - Ok, I'm good with hosting (I use bluehost), domain registration and wordpress. I can setup a site -- example: futureceleb [dot] org < non-profit myself and a few others are in the process of starting -- I know about the Google keywords tool. I gather Aweber is used to manage e-mail lists. What else do I need to familiarize myself with before I get rolling? I am unclear on what Google analytics, Alexa and things like that are, but I presume they are important.

Blogs to Follow - Right now I am still sifting through info at smartpassiveincome.com and have recently started visiting nichepursuits.com. Unrelated to IM, I am a fan of stevepavlina.com. His post "10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job" completely resonated with how I, a 9-5 wage earner, already feel about corporate life. It also was my first introduction to the passive income model and mindset. What a game changer!

Are there any other sites you would recommend for either learning about IM news and strategies or personal development? Have I overlooked any methods to passively make money online in this post?

I look forward to interacting with the WF community and sharing my progress. My first goal is to generate $1/day, passively. My ultimate goal is to completely replace my active income with passive income. I am motivated by the thought of being able to start an "I Quit My Job!" thread in the relatively near future. Then I will have freed up all the mental power reserved for the 9-5, diverting it to explore even larger goals like doubling my old active income with passive streams.

I am very excited for what the future holds for me! This forum is a godsend. Thank you all for maintaining such an excellent resource.

Ok well yes you are asking everything all at once to maximise not having to bother looking around to find answers already exhaustively given on this forum.
Allow me to tackle one then...

When doing keyword research do NOT stick to one tool. Is this IM world that small & boring? No never. Use a whole host of tools to get the flavour of the WORLD of keyword research.

Maybe I will come back & give you a list of tools recommended but only if I am so bored one Sunday afternoon & miraculously WF has not knocked me off my feet with interest.

Thank you for your response. That last paragraph was particularly informative!

Truth be told, I just tested the concept of backlinking by linking to this thread from my shorter keyword post. Not only did it bring you to this post, but also creative additional traffic to revive a dead thread. This stuff really works!

I apologize if the lengthy post was off-putting. I am simply hoping to gather enough information about the various ways to earn money with IM, to make an informed decision as to white route(s) to pursue. Ultimately, experience is the best teacher. Some of the responses have already pointed that out. Thanks for nudging me in the direction of action!

As mentioned above, you're basically asking to learn everything at once in a thread.

The best thing you could do is start a site about something(s) you love and are passionate about. Write as much as you can and then write articles that point back to that site, as well as building links via social media, blog comments, etc.

Just get busy writing and you'll be able to learn everything over time, not at once in a thread (not going to happen).

This is a good point, I would start focusing on finding a hungry market and put together a product, you can even start getting links to a squeeze page while working on completing your product that way you can write articles and get a good tool, something like Senuke to work on promotion and then when you have the product ready launch, or find affiliate products.

When reviewing a product, you're more likely to make sales via your affiliate link if you've actually bought it because you can give it an honest review. When I review a product I always make sure I buy the product first, to ensure I'm offering quality goods to my visitors.

As for "squeeze sites", you can always just create "squeeze pages" on your article sites which capture people's email addresses by offering something of high value for free.

As for your niche site, I agree with clenard above: write articles for a niche you're passionate about. This way you're more likely to connect with your visitors and also it will feel less like "work".

Backlinking is important for any site that you want to rank higher in Google. Make sure that you only exchange links with high quality relevant sites though.

Hope this helped with some of those questions

Yes you've missed a method for passive income that can easily bring you a ton of money: creating an info product and doing a product launch, ideally an evergreen launch.

Yes, Definitely promote affiliate products. If you can promote an affiliate product related to your niche, you'll earn cash. Just be sure it's a product people will like. If it's a ****ty product, you'll piss off your customers.

    Hi

I actually think that was a good post for a newbie. You didn't ask for 'all' the answers just feedback on pieces people felt they could help. You also clearly have read around a lot in the past couple of weeks and are looking more for clarification of your understanding than "I'm new how do I make $1,000 a month with Amazon/Clickbank/Adsense".

That being said... here are my thoughts on some bits and pieces...

That is an excellent approach to start. You don't need to think about monetization right away. Researching a niche, starting a blog and creating good content is a foundation that will provide you many options.

Affiliate Marketing - Building a site designed around a specific product you intend to promote as an Amazon or Clickbank affiliate. Those seem to be the most popular two options but, of course, there are other opportunities out there too. SEO and backlinking are required.
For clickbank products it is important to start building a list in your niche. CB products can be hard to sell with "cold" traffic and many CB have a high refund rate. With a list, you can build trust and a relationship that makes it much easier to market CB products.

How does one write a review about a product they've never used? Or do you actually try the products you market?
This recent thread will give arguments on both sides of this issue (great info and tips there too):

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...unethical.html

Authority sites and blog sites seem similar but also different in the sense that the former attracts visitors with useful, credible content, while blogs win people over with personality.
That's a pretty good way of describing the distinction if you wanted to make one.

    Keyword Searching -

I've seen people on WF cite the local searches number as the figure to base decisions on, not global. Why?
This can be for many reasons.

For Amazon sites it is because you will be using an affiliate link from an area. If you use amazon.com you want local US traffic because you are mainly targeting the US market. If you are using Amazon.co.uk then you will want to know the search volume for the UK.

Sort of. You are correct it is not SEO competition. The "competition" is the competition for ads by advertisers. So high competition means there are many advertisers bidding on the keyword and low competition means there are fewer advertisers bidding on the keyword.

It has nothing to do with SEO competition. Generally (esp for AdSense) high competition is good because you know there are a lot of advertisers paying to get access to the niche.

What tools do you use for keyword research? I've read a bit about Market Samurai and Long Tail Pro.
I would check out a few that have free trials, or free versions. Market Samurai and Traffic Travis both offer free versions.

A lot of new KW tools have come on the market recently and can be found in the WSO forum at very reasonable prices.

Most sales pages provide a video showing the tool in action so you can get an idea of what it does,

    Blogs to Follow
For Adsense I would check out Adsense Flippers:
AdSense Flippers | AdSense Sites | Niche Websites | Internet Businesses For Sale

It is good for niche research and niche sites in general too.

They offer their system as a Free WSO with no opt-in:

Or you can opt in at their site and get it too.

hardtofindseminars.com This is a fantastic site that allows free acess to hundreds of audio interviews (free mp3 downloads) with marketing experts:
Free Marketing Interviews |Business Marketing Seminars | Internet Strategy Secrets and Information

Matt Carter has a free affiliate video course with opt-in that is pretty good and includes his free WP affilate theme that is very popular. Good for Amazon review sites too. Not so good for a regular blog.

I read another thread where the question was posed whether or not the War Room is worth it. The responses were an overwhelming YES! In fact, many people said the price was pennies in comparison to the information contained therein. I do plan on joining soon. May have to wait until my next paycheck, but it is near the top of my list. Thanks for the reminder.

Tomas, that is a tremendous help! You've given me another approach to consider with squeeze pages. Thank you,

Kaplan, I knew I was missing something. I am going to start with the basics initially, but I am very interested in exploring launching a product in the future. Perhaps I can start off by building a good authority site, consolidating the best content in a useful e-book with some added exclusive literature, and offer that for sale.

Rocky, I'll definitely keep that in mind! Thanks

OnSubie, thank you for taking the time to respond to all of those questions. You have given me a wealth of information.

I actually found that amazon thread last night after I created this one, and have been following it ever since. It has definitely given me a new perspective to consider. I will be sure to check out the other links tonight.

I am still committed to launching my initial niche site this week. I do not want to get caught up in the "analysis paralysis" cycle someone mentioned in another thread. Great term, btw. There is a lot of information regarding IM, and I realize that I won't be able to truly understand to bulk of it until I start applying what I'm reading and learning my trial and error.

You guys have helped position me squarely on the launch pad. Thanks much!

There is a new blog created every 6 seconds. There are more than a billion websites. That is tremendous competition for traffic and attention in blogging. It is a valuable part of a content marketing strategy. My advice, review what the guy running smartpassiveincome.com states is the number one source of new traffic to his site based on a reader survey he conducted of more than 1k readers. Once you know what that answer is, start studying the strategies smart people in that traffic generation source are using to exploit that tool, and realize that if you incorporate that tool correctly into your marketing strategy you can in just a few short months go from an unknown to a market leading expert with fairly low competition with a solid low competition search tool providing you access to literally hundreds of millions of potential new consumers daily at almost no cost to you. It is something less than 200k people are doing and only a handful are doing well. It is low hanging fruit and it is ripe for the picking, but it takes work and an investment of up front time in education and dollars in tools that MOST won't make!

    Forget all of that stuff.

Focus on building a list. Do just that for the next few months and you'll get results faster than any other method... and results that you can grow on and sustain for years to come.
