How to Make More Money With Your Amazon Affiliate Links...

Howdy,

I wanted to share something with you all here as, if you're an affiliate with Amazon, you may not know about it. Several of my subscribers, friends on Facebook and even Warriors on here didn't know about this and it will make them all more money from their Amazon links.

There's a major problem with being an Amazon affiliate:

Let's say that I'm based in the UK (because I am). I visit your site, which is based in the USA and I click on one of your Amazon affiliate links.

Because you're in the States (I'm guessing that bit), you signed up as an affiliate for Amazon.com, but when I reach Amazon.com, I'm immediately reminded by Amazon themselves that there's a 'local' Amazon store for my own country (Amazon.co.uk).

When I see that, I click the link to Amazon.co.uk and leave the .com.

And in one click, you've lost your commission from my sale.

I head to the .co.uk, complete my transaction and you're left wondering why you're not making more money with Amazon.

There's a simple, free solution (that's been available since 2009) that will solve the problem. It seems lots of people don't know about it, hence this post.

This video explains it all and shows you how you can even get paid as an affiliate for Amazon Japan (whether or not you speak the language):

Hope you enjoy it and more importantly, that you apply it.

If you have any questions, leave them below and I'll do my best to answer them.

My pleasure Shaun. Glad you found it useful. Yes, you can use Google Translate to sign up to all the other foreign sites. The translation is a bit clunky, but you can get a good idea of what's supposed to go where.

I've used this plugin and it does a great job, the only shame though is that it does not cloak, so if you have a few bare amzn links on page then Google will not like it.

If the developer could have it cloak and geolocate at the same time it would be perfect.

I think its GPL, so maybe I will take a look at the code.

I've been been using this on all my sites, one feature you haven't mentioned yet is that you can simply link to any amazon page or product and forget completely about your affiliate ID. The link localizer will add this automatically.

This means that my reviews are much easier to write, and I don't need to fret about making sure every single link contains my affiliate ID.

I didn't make it as clear as I could have but I mentioned it at the end of the video when I said that you could just paste a raw link (not an affiliate link) to the product.

Due to my previous knowledge of the plugin I didn't bother watching the video, I'm sorry about that. But at least this way the people who only read will also know ;-)

No worries. That's actually the reason that I decided to post it here, as I bought a great WSO that omitted this very information.

    Hi Matt

Thanks for posting. I used this plug-in - or a very similar one - a few months ago but had a few problems with it.

Every time I checked my UK stats (the only other Amazon affiliate program I signed up for) it was reporting something like 5,000 clicks per day but zero sales.

I'm not sure why this happened but there's absolutely no way I was getting 5000 clicks. I disabled the plug-in as I thought Amazon might think something fishy was going on.

Do you use the plug-in and if so have you had any problems with it?

About 70% of my traffic is from the US so I could give my income a nice 30% boost by using this plug-in. Perhaps I'll try it again.

      Hey James,

That's curious... You might want to get in touch with the guy that developed it as that seems a weird anomaly.

I've not had that problem or indeed any problems presented by the plugin and I've been using it for a fair few months now.

In the video you state that you don't need to use an affiliate link as it might confuse the plug-in. On my site I have hundreds - maybe thousands - of Amazon affiliate links.

Will the plug-in be able to convert these links without any problems?
Good question. In my experience, I've found that it converts the links, regardless of whether or not they're affiliate links or not, as the product code is within the link in both cases. That said, it might be worth testing it with one type of each link on a page and seeing if it works on your blog. Seems to work on mine.

Also, I'm not sure if I like the idea of just posting raw links and letting the plug-in convert it for me. Just in case the plug-in stops working and I have to disable it, I'd then have to go through thousands of links and manually add my affiliate links.

Yeah, that's a great plugin but there's one problem I'm having with it.If,for example, you're pushing a product on Amazon.com,often there isn't the same product on Amazon.ca or Amazon.co.uk,and if there is,it is frequently cataloged differently,so your visitors will get a 404 page.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6310022].message }}

Hogre, that should not be an issue since the plugin deals with that.
If you local Amazon store does not sell the product with the same product ID, the script now redirects to a search results page searching for the item's title
The problem i had though is that as soon as you are using any caching plugin or script on your server then the whole geo-tracking is useless. You will have a cached site that is presented to whoever comes from whatever country.
So decision time - slow un-cached site with geographically correct links or a fast and speedy site but no geo-location tracking

    What is your decision???

This is exactly why I stopped using it. All of my big sites use one caching plugin or another and this was a problem.

You mean that Our site will get slower while using this plugin.. Or do you mean that the anazon site that is opened through the link opens up slowly.

Any experienced users using this plugin have seen any slowing of their websites?

I use it (hence the video) but I haven't experienced much slowing of my sites, if any. Then again, perhaps as I add more to the site, it will slow down, but I'll keep you posted.

Very interesting. Didn't realise that it would/could cause the site to slow down. I've not experienced much slow-down, but I need to do a proper test with and then without the plugin (also disabling caching) to be sure. Thanks for the really useful addition to the ol' knowledge bank.

Thanks,I wasn't aware of the update.

If it were my choice,I'd sacrifice some user experience as long as the speed difference is not that drastic.

The plugin doesn't slow down your site. What we are talking about is using caching plugins that speed our sites up. Most people don't use them but the more experienced folks do.

What happens with the geo-targeting Amazon plugin when you use a caching plugin is your pages get cached with the wrong Amazon links on them.

For example, if your product page just happens to get cached by the plugin while it's displaying an amazon.co.uk link, all of your US visitors are going to see the UK links and, of of course, not buy anything when they land on the UK Amazon, costing you commissions.

So, what I prefer to do (as do others) is skip the geo-locating and keep our sites performing well using the cache plugins.

I'm in the UK and have always used the Amazon Link Localizer plugin to capture referrals in different countries. However I've lost faith in it recently because I accidentally clicked one of my own Amazon affiliate links and discovered that the plugin thinks I'm in Germany. Made me wonder how many other people are clicking the links and being directed to the wrong sites as a result.

Part of the problem is that most of this thread is two years old. Even if the plugin was still available, the odds of it still working are pretty slim.

Our buddy, GuyH, put up a since-removed spam post to resurrect the thread and has been bumping it for some reason...
