Phone Spammers Need You Too

I can't believe I just did this.

Normally, I give telemarketers the toilet treatment (meaning I place the phone near the toilet and simply flush the thing when they call). But today, I spoke with the most hapless individual -- ever.

It was the infamous "You have a Microsoft computer virus and I'm here to help," phone call. The guy on the other end was obviously new to the job, and he sounded just a little too nervous to deserve the digital distaste I typically send these people. He slowly, but dutifully read his script, and right as I was about to head to the restroom, I sat back down.

There was so much embarrassment, sadness, and shame in his voice, I felt sorry for him. So I waited for him to finish speaking, and then I asked him if he had any technical skills and a home computer.

He said yes.

I said great. I told him when he gets home, load up the vWorker website and create an account so he could earn some honest, ethical rupees with his skills. We had a short, 30 second conversation about the site, undoubtedly rushed so his boss wouldn't overhear him.

Finally, he said thank you, and I wished him luck.

I will never know if that guy follows through with my advice. But I do know that at a critical moment, there was an opportunity to "sell" this guy on a different route, and I wondered how many more opportunities there would have been with these folks if I had only stayed out of the bathroom.

I guess the moral of this little story is being aware of opportunities when they pop up, and taking immediate advantage of them can be an interesting approach to marketing whatever it is you're marketing. And if what you're marketing is genuinely helpful and ethical, you can feel damn good about peddling it off to people who try to peddle their wares onto you.

I like this post. I get so many spam phone calls on a daily basis that I hardly answer the phone if I don't recognize the number. Now I wonder how many opportunities I may have missed.

Yeah, I have a twist on this kind of story also.

I'm starting to make some decent money through the program in the first link in my signature. It's a free home based business opportunity that involves getting leads for a merchant account company.

My main business is custom shirt printing. I get 2 or 3 calls a week from companies trying to get me to sign up for a merchant account through them. If any of you have brick and mortar businesses you know how often you get these calls or salespeople dropping by your place of business.

Every time one of them call I turn the tables and pitch them about how they could be working at home doing the same thing, and maybe even making more money. I had one person tell me how they just sit in a cubicle and telemarket all day long and they would do anything to get out of it.

A couple of the people I talked to have actually joined.

Telemarketing is a respectable job and I don't think it's all dishonest or unethical.

Used effectively, it can bring in the highest ROI out of all the advertising methods

Sorry -- I should have been more clear, as I wasn't bashing all forms of telemarketing. I was really just reacting to the current Microsoft scam calls we're experiencing.

I think the OP was actually referring to the

"You have a Microsoft computer virus and I'm here to help,"

It's a pretty well known scam from people trying to sell you virus protection, or even worse, trying to install a virus on your computer. I read about people that get these calls and let them into their computers through remote access and it just goes downhill from there.

I used to be polite with phone call advertiser, but they just don't know what they doing or where to stop.

I remember one guy called me and lasted over 30 minuets trying to sell me something for houses (and I finally told him thanks, I don't own a house). I though that would be the end of it.

but he called again, and i asked politely to take me of their list (I don't know where they got my number) but apparently being polite is not the way to go.

After that I made my life pretty easy, once he call and mention his company name, I end the call, it is a manner of time before they stop.

I don't know who buy what on the phone or how, but really i think call phone sales are more of a dead end specially with many scammers can get u in trouble.

I guess you helped the guy asking him to look online, he probably have a better shot online.
