Best day to run a Flippa auction

I'm getting ready to sell my main website next week. I've been studying the Flippa listings of recently sold sites to see how to write my own description. . However, I've never sold anything on Flippa.

I'm wondering - is there a better time of the week to run your Flippa auction? How many days should I run the auction? Any other tips for me?

    I would recommend (from experience) that you run your auction for 7 days minimum ideally aim to have your auction finish on a Sunday night after dinner. I realize it depends on which time zone but go for Sunday night US

      That's a very good suggestion, thanks for the heads up. Am starting to venture into domain flipping myself so this tip can be handy for me.

    You cannot target a fixed finish time since Flippa will extend the listing time if there is a last minute bid. I think a 3 day auction is more than enough.

    Ending on a Sunday night makes sense, thanks. I can still plan to try to end it at 10 p.m. and then if there's a last minute bid, that's fine too.

    My experience has been that I've gotten little traffic on the weekends, so I time it to end on a weekday.

      Argghh! And I know you're a super-experienced Flippa seller! Any particular weekday?

      Also - is there any downside to posting a "buy it now" price? Like if I name a high price that I'd be happy with?

        If it's going to be a short 3-day auction, I'll run it on Monday or Tuesday. When someone bids on your auction in the last 4 hours, it automatically extends the auction by another 4 hrs to prevent shill bidding. I've actually had auctions run a couple of days longer due to this.

        If it's going to be a 5-day auction, I'd run it on Thursday so that it would end on a weekday. Some may have had a different experience but this question has been asked before, and the majority of the answers were to avoid ending on a weekend. Particularly now with summer here, people tend to be away from their computers doing real life stuff on the weekends...

        and what better way to kill a long, boring day at work than by browsing through Flippa auctions

      I can confirm that. I never had any success when my auctions ended on a Sunday nigh. It always was a disaster for me. Make sure it always ends on a weekday.

    I would maybe try having it end on a Tuesday or Wednesday, I've found thats peak operating time for a lot of IM'ers

    Why not start on a Friday morning, so that it will be Friday evening (a weekend) on the other side of the globe? Leave it open for 7 days so that people working on weekends and/or weekdays can see it. Good luck!

    Interesting post Dana. You've got some good advice from the experienced flippa warriors.

    It's a shame we don't have software like terapeak for eBay which gives you detailed analysis of the best times to start and end an auction, what is selling, average prices and a whole lot of key information to optimize your auction. We need something similar on flippa where you press some buttons and you have access to all the key stats.

    Study the successful flippa sellers to see how they start an auction. Is it with a no reserve and $1 starting bid? BIN price? and so on.

    I learned
    A) Approve bids in Groups
    B) Allow all bids , but make sure BIN is with paypal
    C) I 'digg' and 'reddit' my Flippa Auction / Also did Google News
    D) Share it on Forums like DP / Warrior if you can
    E) Try to display all the facts on front page of auction with EASY TO READ layout


    F) Do not tell anyone your Reserve ??? Anybody else know if this is a good one?

    G) Stay Away from Shill bidding but i honestly think it's hard to compete on flippa in the right way, while they have this going on. All the sites with the most bids / action are obviously going to be more interesting.

    H) Try to have dialogue with bidders, though most wont it seems.

      I have heard that if you accept payment via paypal you are at risk of being cheated - basically the buyer could complain about the transaction and demand a refund. I get the impression that escrow.com is much safer.

      What does it mean to approve bids in "groups"?

        I don't know what he means by that, but yes, you can get cheated using Paypal. If they file a dispute and win it, they get the money, the domain and the website. I've accepted as much as $2,500 via Paypal because I had a gut feeling the buyer was legit, but it is a risk.

        I did have one file a dispute after buying and I won the dispute. I had a sales contract that he signed, I showed Paypal the Flippa auction that he bought it from, etc. and they decided in my favor. Technically, since it's a digital product, they should always decide in your favor, since they say they don't support digital products, but that isn't always the case.

        Escrow is much safer. The buyer puts the money in escrow and then you transfer the domain and the site files. Buyer should then approve the transfer of the money. If they don't you can dispute it and the buyer's money would be held up until the dispute is resolved.

    Yeah, I've always started my auctions on Tuesdays and Fridays. The more money you expect to make from the auction, then the longer you're going to want to run it. Although, I wouldn't go more than 10 days for an auction.

    You want to give people a reason to bid when they first see the auction, so if its too long, they get bored.

    Gotta love it, I was looking for Flippa tips on Google and I ended up on the best place in the world..WF. Ha, I guess I should've known to start here!

    I should've read this thread before I put up my auction but it looks like I did things right anyways! I put mine to end this coming Friday night so I'll let everybody know how it goes

    Hi Dana,

    I have sold quite a few websites with Flippa and done well.

    If you want let me know and I will PM you some of my listings so you can have a look at the copy etc...

    In my experience it does not matter what day you list - however only list for 7-10 days unless it is a HUGE site because if it doesn't sell by then it isn't going to sell.

    I always put ALL extras on my listings.

    Also make sure you answer all questions on your listing super fast and include:

    * Earnings

    * Traffic

    * Analytics

    * Screenshots of earnings etc... the more the better.

    If you are getting decent traffic this can help, and mention your page rank and alexa ranking as well.

    Also put a low starting bid and a reasonable reserve and you should do well.

    Hi,

    There is no such thing as best day to list at Flippa.

    From my experience, when your listing is close to the end, there will be a lot of biddings.

    I just SOLD my (first) domain + new site on flippa (3-day auction) this past Saturday and I got 45 bids... (not too bad)

    it was also on the MOST ACTIVE list (that's key) on the last 24 hours. Starting price was 1 buck and NO reserve and NO bin.

    Here is what it is interesting... it should ended about noon but the action extended until 7 to 8 pm due to "sniper bidding".

    I will run another auction today to end THIS FRIDAY and let you guys know.

    Also, it depends on the QUALITY of the domain or website you're selling (i believe)

    I had a site on Flippa that failed to sell. Too many low offers that didn't come anywhere close to the reserve. Probably priced it too high. So that's another thing to consider.

    I always do a 3 day auction and run it on a Friday afternoon...more people are searching on the weekends as they are off from their jobs.

    I just listed my site yes its new it doesnt have traffic, income etc.. But its ready to be monitized by Adsense, Clickbank, Amazon and more if you want i really need some help to get this auction going ! Thanks for this awesome thread and waiting for a reply

    It also depends on the type of site you are selling and whether you have active bidders. Flippa is a marketplace, not much different from the stock market. Ups and downs on Wall Street happen all of the time on Flippa, so its hard to say that because you had one bad weekend or even a few bad weekends that all weekends on Flippa are bad.

    Personally, my experience is the opposite. Most Flippa buyers have 9-5 jobs so they are looking for hope over the weekend. Your website could be that hope. The best thing to do is simply establish the auction and try to drive as much traffic to it as possible.
