Article Writing - I suck Need a Formula

Well I have gone and done it. Signed up at EZA - finally, and submitted my first article on my current preferred niche topic - Referral Marketing for the Insurance Industry. It's not live yet - sent in today.

I feel like I have plenty of ability to generate interesting content to my target audience in this niche. However; where I know I suck is effective article writing formula that gets people to Take Action. Plenty of folks have interesting tid bits of knowledge they can plop down on the page.

Is there a guide or formula you use to create your articles?

A.I.D.A.?

Not looking for rocket science - but I can see that success in Article Marketing has a bit more to it than just merely having something interesting to say. Resource box utilization, Content layout, link usage etc...

Seems some authors try to make up for shabbily crafted content by sheer volumes of articles - perhaps that is more effective?

Would love to hear your ideas, links to eBooks or articles that helped you become an expert article marketer.

Thx,

Steve

1.) Search articles in your niche already posted on EZA (or other article directory like GoArticles.com)... find 20 - 30

2.) Use them as a template to rewrite your own unique article (better to rewrite a good article than PLR crap)

3.) Formula = Give them a PLAN in the article... and offer the SOLUTION in your author bio at the end

    "How To [Whatever]"

Step 1: Do this manual task

Step 2: Do this manual task

Step 3: Do this manual task

[Bio] Or you can use this automated way that requires absolutely no work - you can even get 100% results while sitting on your couch eating chicken wings and watching TV by just visiting [your niche keyword as a hyperlink].

Ok that was a bit exaggerated (just a bit) but I hope you got the message.

Don't make it harder than it has to be.

And for anyone looking to be negative and bash this post... I'm not suggesting plagarism. I'm suggesting using an existing article as a template to rewrite as your own.

Don't just change some words. Read the paragraph, get the 'message' from it and then rewrite it in your own words.

    Good Luck!

The most effective way to get the readers to move from your article to click on your resource link is to make your resource box look more like another paragraph at the end of your article as opposed to just another resource box.

Highlight a problem : Did you realise that asking for a referral from your client after you finish is not the best way
Aggravate the problem: The sad part is most reps think they are doing well and do not realise how much money their missing
Offer free easy solution to show your expertise: Tell your client that you expect at least three referrals in return for doing a good job!
Place the hook in your finish: Of course there is a way that you can even treble your referral rate.

Use the previous suggestion of using a finishing paragraph as a link.

    Hi Steve,
    I love Frank Kern's approach...

    1) Here's What I Got.
    2) Here's What It'll Do For You.
    3) Here's What I Want You To Do Next.

1a) Simply explain what you have to offer. What is the service, tactic, techniques, strategies, box of stuff that you are promoting.

2a) What are the benefits that the reader will gain when they use your stuff? Don't make the mistake of bullet pointing features here. Stick with benefits. Use emotional triggers. Solve problems. This is what people need. They have a problem or hurdle of some sort, be it an ailment or learning curve to overcome, they are looking for a solution to something.

3a) Tell them exactly what you want them to do next. No begging, no dodging corners or light closing. Ask for the sale. Be confident in what you have to offer and sell it.

I know you are writing articles, but from a marketing perspective its just like a sales letter. You get the readers attention with a captivating headline, draw them in with an engaging subhead or leader paragraph, then you suck them in on an emotional level by tapping into their deepest needs, wants and desires. Close the deal with a call to action. Make them an offer they can't refuse.

When it's done correctly they will be chomping at the bit, frothing at the mouth, with credit card in hand, simply begging to buy your stuff!

    Hope that helps.

A very nice summary of (what seems to me, at least) a winning formula, Richard.

      Thanks.

Hey Richard, you've got a winning post there. An additional tip: Do not reveal too much of what you're going to offer so that you can generate enough curiosity to make the reader visit your site for more...

McKay nailed it perfectly! Its always good to find top quality articles first to get some great ideas for layout and structure. Use the top 5 you can find and take note of the structure and headings used in these articles, and then cut and paste the order of paragraphs you want in your article, and then rewrite the article in your own words! This saves so much time in the long run and can make things much easier! Hope this assists!

There's a WSO that you need to have a look at. It's offered by a warrior named Jeremy Kelsall. He and his partner Don are the real deal. They're doing an article marketing bootcamp for $24 (unless it's gone up). Here's a link to the WSO:

      Steve,
I am finishing up my first month of really intense article marketing. I initially used other articles as guides but as I continued to write more and more I was able to see patterns about which type of articles had good click throughs, views, and even which I think converted to sales. I think after 20+ articles in a niche you will have a great idea about what formula you need to use.

Many awesome tips here already, so I will just add:

Use Curiosity, and use stories in your article.

As for your bio box, again use CURIOSITY. To do it, you can ask a question.

    Curiosity will make them click.

    After that, get their email.

    All the best.

Write at least 100 articles and find what works for you so you don't have to guess at who here is giving you the best advice, write 100 articles anyway, and still not be sure what works .

That being said here's my theory on a problem/"solution" article

1-You're article must be well written to keep the reader from hitting the back button.

2- quickly let the reader know you are talking about their EXACT problem

3- Highlight key reasons why their the problem is worse than they thought it was and it needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY.

4- DO NOT solve their problem. If you feel you must do something, mention a common solution that all the other sites mention(preferably a really expensive/undesireable one)

5- Then slide the writing into your resource box where you offer the ultimate solution.

OR you could just do the often repeated WF "solve your readers problem and earn their trust"(cuz undoubtedly they will easily remember you bookmark your page or subscribe to your list and buy any crap eBook you push on them; Instead of solving their problem in 3 different ways and clicking away to play online poker...)

Check out Allen Grave's article website. He provides lots
of great information about how to write good and winning
articles - it also comes with his article writing handbook.

It's hands-down one of the most indepth look into the
world of article writing in my opinion.

You should know also that the more you write, the easier it gets. When i look back to my old first articles i realize how much more i know now and how easier it is for me.

I have some very good articles saved as a reference; i read one of them every time before start writing an article. It puts me in the right frame.
Also Audacity i found to be very useful. When i want to start a new topic i just talk to myself in the mic about that topic, and try to explain my points like i would do when talking with a friend. Then start writing with the records playing in my headphone; the words and ideas flow so much easily.

    Steve,
Here is something from the Ezine Articles blog about article templates that you might find useful. It offers some different approaches, so would help in rewriting stuff as well.
