What is the definition of Internet Marketing to YOU ?

I get asked from my parents What business are you doing" and I answer them "Internet Marketing". Straight away, it gave them the ideas of illegal selling on the web. Have anyone experience this as well? how do you explain internet marketing to them when they are a total newbie and have/has no knowledge in this area ?

Wikipedia say:
Internet marketing, also referred to as web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet.

and what do you say in your own words ?

    hmm to me...this is what i found from ezineartcles
    There gave been a lot of speculations on the clear definition of Internet marketing. Some said it was all Internet activities, where as others confuse it for search engine activities. As a matter of fact, online marketing is defined as any activity that is done to market a website. It need not be only the search engine, it can be anything.

    As we define, Internet marketing as a collaboration of all Internet related marketing activities, it actually includes everything right from search engine marketing and optimization, to affiliate marketing and banner advertising, email newsletter marketing etc. website analysis, performance tracking and customer relations are all considered to be parts of the umbrella head Internet marketing. This confirms that online marketing is much more than just promoting a website.

    Hence, when you are planning to venture into Internet advertising it is advised that you pick up a niche platform and excel on it. This is a better way to approach Internet marketing as a business. For example if you found affiliate marketing interesting and exciting, it would be a good idea to adopt affiliate marketing as your online marketing tool. Once, you have taken up affiliate marketing make sure that you know the field thoroughly and master all fact and features in the tool.

    When you are new in the Internet business, this is the best and the safest way to approach the vast gamut of successful ventures on the web. In a few months you will be able to acquire excellence in your selected forte, from where you will earn quite a lot of revenue.

    Gradually you can move from one aspect of Internet marketing to another and then try and acquire the knowledge required to learn its pros and cons. This way in a short span of time, you will be able to learn about the different website marketing techniques and become an IM expert.

    Today, Internet marketing and advertising is considered to be the best way to earn revenue and generate profit. But in order to attain this. It is important to understand the core of each of the business so that you earn maximum profit from them too.

      I just say that I promote and sell products and services online using my own blogs, websites and other sources of online advertising.

      When they ask WHAT I'm selling, I tell them it is a few things:

      - Products and services that are of interest and benefit to other people marketing online, like eBooks on marketing and SEO, and web hosting services.

      - Products and services of interest to general consumers; mostly from "my" online international superstore that features more than 7,000 products and services. (Of course, the store is part of one of the online affiliate marketing companies that I am a member of).

      You can say basically the same thing, but adjust it to fit your own activities.

    When I told people about IM, they usually thought is network marketing or mlm. Duh...

    I will tell people that I am selling information in forms of e-books, audio, video to people on the Internet.

    When I tell people about IM they never believe how I do it etc and make money from IM it takes a bit of explanation but when I show them proof of my incomes they soon seem to understand how great IM is and what it is!

        Internet Marketing is not a business! It is just one way of marketing any kind of business. Unfortunately most IMers have never been involved in any other business so don't understand they live in a tiny rockpool, not the ocean! They run around selling the latest IM 'gimmick' to each other. Don't get me wrong here, you can make a lot of money in the IM niche, but most serious players (IM gurus?) make most of their money outside this niche.

        The best way to answer the question you posed is:

        "I am in the business of helping people get ... [put the key benefit of what you are selling here] by ...[tell them how you deliver the benefit here]".

        If you are selling products that help others to do business online, this would translate as:

        "I am in the business of helping ordinary people realise their dreams of building a business on the internet. I do this by providing them with the knowledge and tools they need to be successful!"
