What's the Biggest Marketing Mistake You Ever Made?

Thought this would be a fun thread for us all to admit to bloopers and mistakes in our marketing and learn from one another. I'll get us started with my BIGGEST mistake:

#1. NOT HAVING AN UPSELL
I launched a product in 2006 and made $250,000 in a week (great) but DIDN'T "have time" to create an upsell or downsell for it (ouch!). BIG mistake, I had plenty of valuable things I could have offered and generated maybe $100k+ more sales from this but didn't realize importance of upsells and downsells back then

So - what's been YOUR biggest marketing mistake?

Yes it's easy to get caught up in the moment sometimes and forget the bigger picture. We've all been there...

    1) paying $6k for a mentor that made me absolutely nothing
    2) waiting over 2 years to launch something that by the time i did release it there wasnt the interest any more

Yes you have to find the right mentor for sure and, of course, the mentor should never promise to make you anything. Mentoring is a guidance thing where they advise you and you complete all the work so I hear what you're saying - if you don't get the right advice in the first place then it's pointless.

Yes - launching can be a long, tiring process but you have to "seize the day" as they say and get the thing to market when it's hot as you said.

Mine was trying too many things at one time and thinking that
I could build an online business without an email list.

Another would be trying to do everything myself when I've never
heard of the concept of outsourcing before.

Haha - yes done that one too! Classic! It's typical though isn't it? You get auto-renewal on all the domains you don't care about and turn it off on the one that really matters! :-)

    NOT building a list.

I spent 6 months working on my site and hiring a VA to help me along the way. Then I realized that my conversion rate was 0.05%. 99.5 out of 100 people left my site and I would never do business with them again.

I literally had thousands of visitors landing on my website every month, but I only made 2 measly sales a month.

Although most visitors did not make any purchases, those who landed on my site were laser targeted because the keywords that I was targeting were all “buyers” keywords.

All of them had a problem and they were interested in the solution that I was offering. They left simply because they were not at the final stage of their buying process.

Sadly, all the courses that I studied did not cover anything on the importance of list building. Although I learnt a very good lesson, I have also wasted a lot of time, effort and money due to my lack of knowledge.

That was when I realized the importance of capturing the leads with an opt-in page. it is better to have an opt-in than a sale in the long run, because with an opt-in you can sell to your subscribers over and over again.

I sincerely hope that newbies don't make the same mistake I made.

Think big, think long term, build a list!

David - yes totally. List building is super critical for sure and yet quite often ignore by some in favor of the more "sexy" internet marketing topics. Good post.

My biggest mistake was spending over$1000 for a mentor that made a promise that I would MMO. I agree that if you're "promised" that you'll MMO - don't fall for it.

Some of those so called mentors can be very charismatic and will sweep the newcomers away. Then the newcomers actually turn into robots with the "follow him" syndrome...lol

A valuable and costly lesson learnt indeed.

Hmmmmm, I keep buying domains, visualizing them already built up in action. I let them sit there and collect dust, while I am active on my already established websites.

I will get them up in time. I am just moving faster in my head.

6 years ago, the reason why I did not break
my income barrier was because of one
reason: Not sticking to one thing.

Not only did I not stick to one thing, I shifted
from one area to the next, and then I went
back to the old method, and then I fluctuated
like a migrating bird from method to method...

Until I met several mentors that really
changed my life. Sure, there are methods that
have "floated away"... But the principles of
these methods always remain - and they
        are universal.

As long as you understand what true marketing
is, and how to adapt to it in the best possible
way, you're going to stand tall, like a cactus
        in the hot desert.

Neither the cold night nor the sweltering heat
        will kill your business.

        Sincerely,
        Winston Tian

many people are gunna say these two but they are DAMN BIGGIES!!

    1) Not getting off my ass and actully doing stuff. Checking emails, dirty sites, and facebook is not going to make you money.

    2) This is my BIGGEST ONE..... NOT building a list sooner. I regret that. The list, and how you deal with your list is one of the biggest secrets to success. I still wish I built a list sooner.

I've done a few things that have really held me back along the way...

    1. Focusing on wayyy too many things at one time.
    2. Buying high-ticket items without thoroughly researching the product creator beforehand.
    3. Reading... well, reading too much. And not applying what I was reading.

Having too many things running at the same time which made tracking and tweaking a bit of a hell. . . Would never go down the road of getting too many upsells without in one time withoug having to know if the basic program would even get the $$$.

I would agree with a number of post here about the mistake of not making a list. Well I did
not gave too much emphasis on making a list when I was starting. Should have known better and make further research on the do's and don'ts of list building. Good thing forums here in WF gave me good insights on this.

Once I had a review page promoting 3 different "how to get pregnant quickly" products, but I forgot to finish the text for the number 3 product. The text I had there was..and I quote "Put some b0ll0cks here about product number 3" lol. Here's the funny thing, I actually made some sales with that review page!!

Another classic was where I was getting people to sign up for a weight loss freebie report, and then when they signed up, it redirected to the wrong page...which was for my learn heavy metal guitar product ha ha ha
