How do I set up a merchant account?

Hey warriors I've been doing some research lately on setting up a merchant account, and I've been getting mixed opinions. *

I really need to know the best way to set up my own merchant account in preparation for a large website. *So far the biggest questions I have are:

1)should I use a third party merchant or go directly through the bank?

2) if you think I should use a third party, then which ones would you recommend.

3) how long does it normally take to set something like this up?*

Appreciate any advice you could give me.

Use paypal at the start as most people like using it to pay with and you also will need it along side your merchant credit card payment method in future to help with conversions. It's quite straight forward to set up and doesn't take long.

First decide what ecommerce solution (shopping cart) you will use. Then fond out what gateways they support. Then choose a merchant provider that works with the gateway you need.

A local bank can occasionally be a good option but rarely. Many only refer you to expensive third party merchant providers because they do not offer merchant accounts. You can quickly find yourself in a relationship with a provider who does not know you, your business or have your best interests in mind.

For this reason you may want to consider any number of providers who cater to the online market. Whoever you choose make sure you are comfortable and that you have contact info for a go to rep if you need to discuss your account.

It sounds like I'm going to have to do some serious homework on this one. Do you have any suggestions on who I could start with because there are a lot of providers?

The most important thing is that It's flexible, and hassle free for the customer. Anything more than asking for the're card information and name is too much.
