please settle an $50 bet between me and my dumb ass boyfriend....

Hello warriors,

So I have $50 waging on this.

My boyfriend says that when you view a youtube video - it uses memory on your computer.

I'm saying he's talking a load of mother-board rubbish - as the video is hosted on youtubes servers.

It's getting nasty now - he's sulking in the yard.

There's even $50 riding on this.

Please tell me I'm right? Does watching a video use any of your computers memory (I'm NOT talking about downloading - I'm just talking about going to youtube and viewing). Please tell me it doesn't

Thank you

jenn x

Well, do you mean video card memory or RAM?

Everything you do on your computer uses its memory.

But memory use is transient...once it's used, it gets freed up to get used on the next job.

You're both right - it depends on how you define the term "memory".

If you're referring to RAM (i.e. in simplistic terms, the speed at which things go at), then YES, youtube uses this, as does everything else.

However, if you're referring to memory as HARD DRIVE SPACE, then no, as you are not downloading the video and it is hosted on their servers.

      So give each other $25.

      Hope i've helped ;-)

Actually, you are wrong. The computer is using RAM in the rendering and streaming of the video AND is using hard disk space to buffer the incoming video stream so it does not stutter during playback (even though is does often anyway). And yes, I was a software developer.

        Not true.

Everything is downloaded to something on your hard drive called a browser cache. I'm still trying to break into mine on this new machine, but trust me it's there.

Correct..but, your computer still has to process the incoming info.

Guess what it uses to do that...? Its processor, memory and hard-disk.

Sorry, but maybe get your b/f back from the yard and apologise...

Yep, it sounds like it depends how you are defining 'memory'. Does it use RAM? Yes. Does it use up space on your hardrive (which many people think of as memory)? I don't think so.

I think you may have to treat your boyfriend really well tonight!

As mentioned above it is all in the terminology.

Ram is used for every action on the computer so I think you have some major sucking up to do.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[564700].message }}
  • You're both right, unfortunately (I know how much fun it is to win an argument!)

Really, it does use SOME RAM because the video "preloads" while you're watching it. And the process of loading the web page, and storing the video in your computers cache DOES use memory.

But not nearly as much as downloading it for viewing would, and not for nearly as long because it doesn't download the whole video - it just downloads enough to minimize the "skipping" effect.

Then again, every web page you view uses a tiny bit of RAM as it downloads and stores that site in your computer's cache, so...

Really, just don't let him see this thread.

Dear GUYS and LADS, WWWWAAAAKKKKEEEE UUUUUUP!

What a disappointment... Where do you think you are? Jenny posted a question in the WF forum and not in the MIT one! Also, not in the Ferengi one, as well: "There's nothing more dangerous than an honest businessman...." But what should have in common the latter and WF? The "What's in it for me?" !!!

If I have a question about cosmos, do you think that I expect Carl Sagan to answer on WF? Wrong, my dear friends, in the best case, a fellow warrior ( I would have typed in a name, but I skip it, just in case). So, Jenny, let me wrap up: is there something in it for me? I am modest, so let's say 35%, case in which I will come up with a theory about parallel computing and we get the 50 bucks for us. What do you say?

Quite a few people get confused about exactly what "memory" in a computer really is. There is an old analogy that does a pretty good job of explaining it.

Imagine your computer is a business desk that has a built in 3 drawer file cabinet. When you have a lot of papers you don't use very often you need somewhere to store them while not being used so you place them in the file cabinet. That would be your computers hard drive. This is where all files are stored on your computer. Anything you put there stays there until you remove it.

When you need to use some paper thats in the file cabinet you bring it out and place it on the desk top. This would be the computers memory. Computer memory (RAM) is the workspace where your computer does tasks. When a computer needs to process a program it needs room to freely work. It pulls the program into the memory so that is has free use of it without having to search all over the place for bits and pieces of what it needs. In essense both hard drives and memory store data, but the difference between the two is the fact that hard drives store data until you remove it manually and memory deletes the data from itself when it is done with it.

Being a techie and someone who thinks in logic processes 24/7 I know I'm not the best to try to explain things but hopefully this will help some people understand the difference.

Unless of course you use Virtual Ram as most modern systems do. You know, where the OS uses part of the hard drive and lets it pretend like it's RAM. of course it is deleted once its done just like normal RAM but it still uses the hard drive and it doesnt stay until you delete it like a hard drive.

In any case the BF is right, regardless of if we are talking about HARD DRIVE memory or RAM memory as the youtube video is using RAM while its being played AND its now on your computers hard drive 'memory' in the temporary internet files. Even if you don't keep the files for the moment its being played the video is going SOMEWHERE and its not magic fairy land.

PS. This thread greatly amused me

Sorry you lost the bet. Technically he is right it is using memory but it isn't much. Just having a tab open on your browser uses memory and as the youtube video is being played it uses a small amount of memory to push the images and sound from the server to your screen and speakers.

He's DEAD WRONG and here's why....

Sit together with him at HIS computer.
Watch a video, any video from YouTube.
Then, point to your computer in the next room mentioning that YOUR computer is turned off thus, isn't utilizing any resources whatsoever when watching a You Tube video.
    Collect $50.

(He didn't say, when you watch a You Tube video "on your own computer" - it uses memory on your computer.

    Have a nice day!

Under ordinary circumstances when anything is transmitted to and from the internet it first hits the memory buffers on the network card. The application itself (ie the browser) already has a location on the cpu where it can be accessed. When data is streamed then much of the info is buffered on the hard drive and fed into the memory (RAM) as needed.
In short I think you owe your boyfriend $50

Sod whether you're right or not, it doesn't really matter. just grit your teeth and tell him you are anyway. (Usually works for me, but then I've had 30+ years to mould him to my way of thinking lol)
