Am I doing something wrong?

Ok, in my two weeks since I started affiliate marketing, I still have yet to make my first sale. That is not important however at this stage in the game (though I hope to make one soon), what is important to me is that I think I am starting to figure out how this works to a certain extent. Here are the basic rules to IM that I have come across multiple times, if I am wrong let me know.

1. Choose a Niche

- It doesn't matter what the niche is as long as you are knowledgeable about it

- It could be the most saturated niche in the world (weight loss), but as long as you find a sub-niche within that niche you can still turn it in to a huge money maker

2. Keyword Research: This is somewhat part of step one, this is how you find your sub-niche

- Research a general area and narrow it down to a specific group of people (losing weight for a wedding, losing weight for the beach, etc.)

3. Create a Landing Page

- Start a Blog

- Create a Squidoo Lens

- Purchase a Domain and create your own site

4. Catch your readers attention with some good Sales Copy and throw it on your landing page

- Put yourself in the buyers shoes, why are they searching for this product

- Give them a solution

4. Drive Traffic to Your Landing Page: This is my biggest struggle, but so far I have only used Squidoo

- Submit your landing page to social bookmarking sites

- Ping your site with ping-o-matic/pingoat

- Use free traffic system to drive traffic to your site

5. Make the Sale

If you can successfully execute these steps, that is pretty much all there is to it right? Granted, there are other methods to use in each of those steps that I have stated, but that is the general idea. One of the biggest things I have learned (and please tell me again if this is wrong) is that it doesn't matter what niche you choose. Any niche can be as profitable as you want it to be, no matter how saturated it is as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort to find the right sub-niche within that area. Does this sound right?

PS I would like to make my first sale soon, im not talking about a ton of money, just one sale. I am getting sort of discouraged, though I do not plan on ever giving up on internet marketing. For the past two weeks I have worked at this for an average of 5 - 6 hours a day, and though I think I have learned alot, I have not made a sale still!

Believe my 2 weeks is small fry in IM. That is great you have taken the time to learn the basics although I wouldn't say any niche is ok as long as you know about it. That ain't true. It has to be a profitable niche where people are willing to buy. Sometimes it may be the case you have visitors but they only want info. Check if there are paid ads when doing a google search of your keyword (there are more sophisticated ways) but this is sufficient for now.

Post on forums and blogs relevant to your niche but only post content of value rather than spamming to get a link. Just take your time and do something worthwhile everyday towards your business.

I think it is crucial that you are thinking about helping the cust out, you sound like you know about that with putting yourself in their shoes. If they sense a desperate copy they will prob click away.

    All the best.

Thanks a ton for the quick response. I figured 2 weeks was pretty weak as far as IM goes, I know its really nothing time wise, I just didn't know how long it usually took people to make their first sale. As far as my questionable niche goes, I was more so meaning that if there as a product selling like crazy in that niche, it doesn't matter how many people there are selling the product as long as you can hit the right targeted area of that niche. But you do make a good point as far as making sure it is a niche that will actually buy a product and not just want info. Thanks again yves!

Looks like a plan Trent ... maybe want to test your sub niche with some PPC tests just to make sure there is demand for any keywords you identify ... that way you will not do a ton of work around keywords that maybe do not perform.

Stick with it ... you CAN make money with IM, it is not just hype.

Keep up the attitude trent it seems like you are taking action gettting information and taking more action, at the end of the day if you maintain this paradigm you WILL reach your goals and ambition. The most important thing is to focus on your strategy and if it doesn't work straight away try something different and keep doing that, eventually it will all come together as you put together the pieces of the puzzle

What you wrote here on your 2 weeks of learning took many folks many weeks and months to learn. You are doing fine. It takes time and I can understand how frustrating it must have felt.

I took my first year jumping from program to program learning online marketing, knocking some really hard walls before the light bulb finally brightened up in my head.

Have a goal, set a plan and work on it. Along the way, you will find some sweet success. With experience, you will become better.

    Greetings Trent,

Don't be discouraged. Two weeks is not long at all (especially if you are relateively new to all this).

I noticed you mentioned that you understand IM marketing flow but you did not mention what you have been doing in the way of affiliate marketing.

You will get a wealth of information back if you describe your current marketing efforts in the post. Plus, others with the same issues will benefit from the responses as well.

A lot of Warrior members are earning 5, 10, 20 thousand a week via some type online marketing/ecommerce. You'll get lots of feedback from people in the trenches who are actually doing it.

    Best of Luck!
