So...Do Bing Users Have a Bigger Attention Span? Or Is Google Not Giving Us What We Want?

Let me start the thread by saying I am well aware of the Penguin update...as we all are. I am also well aware of the whack results and changes we have seen in the serps for particular search terms.

Now, I may have already answered my own thread title, but I'd like to give you guys a little personal insight to one of my own websites recent traffic trends so you can form your own thoughts on the matter (and yes its a mostly SERP reliant site, and yes it was hit to a degree, but long tail strategies and it being a summer product keeps it afloat).

Around a month ago (since penguin) I noticed that bing users were spending significantly more time on my website. For the record my Google traffic had decreased, and Bing and Yahoo had either stayed consistent or picked up due to Summer arriving but for the most part no changes in numbers.

What I found in my analytics this afternoon was interesting...

Bing has overtaken my Google traffic which is no surprise thanks to Penguin. But whats interesting is the average time spent on site for the two.

March and April individually for the two engines were pretty consistent across the board with Avg. Site time, but dip into the May stats (i.e. my first full month post Penguin update) and the change is massive.

Ive whipped up and image to illustrate this better, so take a look below (I tried embedding it but it wont appear, so if anyone could help that would be great).

Heres what we see:

- The average time spent AND average pages visited by Google users has steadily been decreasing since April (penguin).

- In particular the May stats show just how much the avg. time Google users spend has plummeted. In my first full month after Penguin nearly an entire MINUTE has been lost, which for an average is huge.

- In comparison, Bing users site time has rocketed, and the average pages visited has done nothing but increase month after month.

So the question is, is this coincidence? Or is Bing providing users with what they are really searching for better than Google now that they are spending more time on their results?

Or are Bing users more interactive? And if so, should we be really looking into the PPC platforms available to us on Bing rather than Google in terms of interactivity and conversions once they hit the landing page?

Ill be paying close attention to this particular site over June.

In the mean time, whats your opinion or experience with Bing since the penguin update?

I think the difference in usage may have to do with the fact that Google is the go-to search engine for most people, while Bing is a secondary search engine used mostly by people who use the internet enough to have reasons for choosing a second search engine (not that this type of person doesn't also use Google). So perhaps Bing users are better at finding what they are looking for on average when they conduct a search.

As for the penguin update, I really don't know.

Possibly, although I disagree (to a degree) with the secondary search engine for those who are in the know enough. Remember Bing ships as standard with Internet Explorer, its not exclusively used by those in the know or have their reasons. In my opinion.

The post penguin stat was huge though. Dropped an entire minute from Google users, and decreasing pages visited. Where as Bing climbs and rocketed in May.

Majority of Bing users are stay at home moms who don't know how to change their default home page. Googlers are smarter, younger and a lot of them have ADD

I'm rooting for Bing to get a bigger user base and I use them as often as Google. Sometimes Google brings up too much garbage in the serps whereas before the fancy updates, it would give me what I asked.

I still like Google, but for me, it has competition from Bing search.
