offline marketing for SMEs + collecting money questions

When doing offline marketing for web design services, what is more effective
1) send sales people to small businesses (stores, restaurants,...)
2) do you do cold calling.
3) mail marketing

Please choose one, I am talking about one of the three to start with, I understand that all three done at the same time would be most effective, but if we had to choose one to start with.

When closing deals using offline marketing, do you ask for the full price from the onset or do you ask for a deposit and the rest when the work is done. I know online, I am asking for the full price but offline, the minimum I could do would be the amount to break even.

thanks,

The highest conversions come from personal contact.

Most offline business owners aren't going to give your "marketing letters" any attention. Cold calling? Not on this planet.

If possible, it's always best to just show up so that a "real" person is seen -- have some materials with you that you can leave them. You might not get to see the head honcho right then and there or an immediate appointment, but when you do, your best chance for a sale will be in-person.
