Has anyone had success advertising with banner ads on related sites?

So i'm thinking of paying for a few banner ads on related sites/blogs/forums to generate some traffic (and hopefully sales) and I would like to hear your opinions of what I should expect from my investment.

Let's say I'm promoting amazon products like 'build your own ???? kit' and I pay for a banner ad on some DIY site/blog/forum that has 10,700 Unique visitors and 122,000 page views a month (claimed by website owner), what should I expect in terms of people clicking through to my site and then making a purchase?

I understand there is no exact answer for this question but I would like to hear from anyone who has done something similar. If you have would you mind sharing your results please.

Also, how do I verify the website owners claims of how much traffic his site is getting per month?

Thanks.

Yes I have. I found banner ads with text only or small images work better than flash graphic style ones...

      Hi mogulmedia,

Thanks for your reply. I can't send you a pm because of my low post count. Could you please explain here in this thread how you might be able to help me out.

      Thanks.

banner ads are good way to promote any physical or digital product but before creating your ad you have to research about the keywords for that product and user requirements too.
banner ads with text and target image also helps you to generate some amount of traffic and profit.

I have had success with banner ads, but it largely depends on what kind of forum you're using for the promotion, and what their rules are regarding use of banner spots (dimensions, copyrighted materials, etc.)

It's definitely worth your while to look for an ad spot on a forum that gets TONS of traffic (like the Warrior Forum) where there are plenty of hungry, buying customers. The style that I generally like to follow is this:

      1. Include a brief but informative large headline
      2. Include smaller sub-headlines that "tease" some of the perks for your offer
      3. Always communicate the main thrust of your product in the primary headline, and this will generate most of the interest from potential customers.

Be advised that every forum (or other web-community for that matter) has very different rules and regulations concerning what kind of banners they accept. For instance, Traffic Planet only accepts banners that include animated features, were as Warrior Forum prefers banners with no animation. If you're thinking about outsourcing the job to a graphics designer, you'd definitely want to know those details in advance to avoid wasting a lot of money on a banner that you can't even use.

      Hope this helps.

It is worth testing depending on price of course. 100,000 page views can sound amazing, but bear in mind that can mean that your banner gets clicked on 1 in 1000 times, so actually that could only be 100 clicks. Also note that the reponse from a banner click rather than a search in google can get a lower response.

I would advise sending the traffic to a really hot squeeze page, then you get more chance of making a sale down the line.

Email them and ask if they can give an average click through rate from the banners.

    Cheers

This kind of traffic is quite good for amazon sites.
Thereby the visitor alerady clicked the banner means he is interested in your product and your conversions rate should be high.

Are you driving them right to your affiliate link, or are you going to send them to a lead capture page first?
