Site visitors are buying, but subscribers are not!?

I've got a site for a product and the site has a free minicourse optin, as well as link to buy the product. Many people have opted in to the free course, but ALL of the sales so far have come from website visitors who were NOT on the free subscriber list. And I'm talking several sales. Good news is those get added to my buyers list. But I'm still trying to figure out what might be wrong with the free minicourse as it seems like a waste if its not converting.

Has anyone else experienced this?

A couple possible explanations I've thought of:

1.) The free optin subscribers are just freebie-seekers to begin with

2.) Perhaps my minicourse is not effective enough (but I based my email series off of a highly successful marketer's who is in a similar niche.)

Another strange thing to note: One of the subscribers on the free minicourse list actually e-mailed me today saying "I haven't been getting your newsletter lately and I don't know why. Can you please put me back on your list? Thanks".
Funny thing is I never removed this person....the daily minicourse was just complete. It sends out 10 e-mails. And even funnier is that this same person had emailed me when they first signed up with excuses as to why they couldn't buy my product. "I lost my job and just had to move in with my aunt so I can't afford...but I'm really desperate for blah blah blah the information you have"

    yeah many subscribers are freebie seekrs, tyre kickers. Or very cautious. They might mull it over for weeks/months before buying..then they'll email you things like

    "I just bought your product...I pray to god you are not going to scam me...if you are please refund my money now.."

    Then after emailing you every day expecting to be spoon fed a $6,000 month biz..they file for a refund on the 89th day. Nice.

    Impulse buyers are best. But some take ther time. Most aren't really interested any way. You do not know about the dozens of people who skim your site and leave without doing anything.

    u mean you copied his email course?

      lol I copied his STRATEGY. He's in a slightly different niche so no, I couldn't copy the emails, only the structure. And for the record, he actually gave me permission to do it

    whats the click through rate after open?

    have you trained your list to buy?

      Currently the first message in the sequence has the highest open rate at about 50%. It slowly decreases as the series progresses and then levels out.
      The average open rate for the email sequence is about 24%.

      Click through is also highest on the first message: 50%. The average click through for the entire sequence is about 14%.

    which autoresponder service are you using. it sounds like at least one customer isn't getting the email course. if he proactively complained, that likely means many others are not getting the course either.

      Actually if you read what I wrote, this person did receive and open the messages. The minicourse series was completed ( it is only 10 days) and that was why the person was not being sent any more daily emails.

      and I use Aweber.

      Yeah you should ensure that your using a quality and trusted autoresponder.

      I recommend Aweber. Great service, easy to use and setup.

      But many times people who are on your subscribers list, subscribe because they can't buy it yet but want more and more information on it so that when they are ready and willing to buy they know what they want and can get it immediately

      Back when I first started, I knew a product that I wanted, signed up for the email list. Kept tabs on it, when I got enough money to buy it I immediately bought it... granted it took 6 months for me to decide to buy it though..

    if you see progressively decreasing open rates, that indicates a change is needed in all content, from first message on.

    also after clicking - are they taking action at the location they are clicking? again, adjust content.
