Turnkey web sites are the hottest selling item on the Internet today. But what is a turnkey web site?

    Hello mahol,

A turnkey website is in a ready-to-use condition. A "true" turnkey web site is sold as a completely functional, operating site with hosting and pre-installed interactive scripts for forms, shopping carts (with product images, descriptions, prices), affiliate programs, etc. All the buyer needs to do is "turn the key" and they are ready to do business. That's why it sells so good.

    Hope that helps, Nico Koehler

Sometimes when I close my eyes I can't see, but I make money.

They are basically a fully functional website requiring no additional work to get running.

Same a turnkey house. You just turn the key and your in! No remodelling/construction or any work to do.

        Just as it sounds.

It's essentially as easy as "turning the key" to operate the site. It's fully functional at the time of purchase, like the others said.

I think the idiom comes from motoring: the car's already fully built and ready to run - all you need to do yourself is turn the key in the ignition to start the engine. And/or possibly from construction: the house is already fully built and the services connected - all you need to do is turn the key in the door and you can move into it. That's the concept, anyway: the "creation work" has already been done for you.

To add to this, and to truly understand the meaning of "turnkey", I would highly recommend The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber, as he has a section explaining what he calls the "turnkey revolution".

It's very interesting and thought-provoking; and it will also help you to better understand how many great businesses operate, and how you can adjust your business to follow suit.

I agree with Joseph. Purchasing a "turn key" website is risky in my opinion. If you do plan to make changes to the site to make it your own. It can be helpful to get one so you have a basis to start from, but developing your own sites is definitely the best way to go. Uniqueness is crucial for success in my opinion.

I'm sure they'd do well in the run-up to Thanksgiving and the Christmas season.

Oh wait...you said turnkey. My bad.

Most turn key sites have been resold to various other people already and it is advisable to at least make the content unique if you desire to pursue that route.

Turn Key website is Done-for-you Business in-a-box. Everything is set up for you so it's ready to go and make money. But it still required some work from you to get it noticed on the web, visible in search engines. And get visitors to sell the product
