marketing newbie - 65k email list

by twanag
30 replies
I run a brick and mortar fitness business and to increase my email list I ran a contest for my current subscribers asking them to send me email addresses of friends and family that might be interested in my service.

One client sent me a list of 65,000 realtors that have no interest in my fitness business.

Question is do I just delete the list or is there a way to monetize this list by sending them great content and offers?

or simply, if you had an email list of 65,000 realtors, what would you do?

Resell the list unless you're prepared to put in some work.

      where would I resell?

I dont mind putting work into it as long as there is potential to make a little $. I have time.

It would be unsolicited email if you sent mail to people that didn't ask for it. Having your customers give you addresses of their friends and family members does not constitute permission based email. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you could do yourself more harm than good if you emailed that list... or sold it.

With that being said, your actual customers are fair game.

I would not use that list. Build your own list of responsive customers. A list of 500-1000 responsive customers is better than a list of 65,000 people who don't know who you are :-)

I am not disagreeing with you yet.

Do you have an actual case study to prove 500 to 1000 responsive customers are better than 65,000 strangers or what?

Brian has explained it all in as unambiguous terms as anyone could. If you contact or send emails to those listed in the 65k email database, you will basically be sending unsolicited emails and that may have some grave repercussions. I would not call that ethical marketing. So in my opinion that list would be useless for email marketing but may be you could give it some creative bent to make some other use of them. For example if you have their individual phone numbers or addresses you may want to contact them personally for IM related services for their businesses...just thinking aloud.

I would convert that list into facebook fan page likes and bring out all the quality people from there..

Cause if you add this email to autoresponders than they will not accept it until they all the email address is confirmed which means double opt in..

Try to convert this into facebook likes.. for that you need to have facebook fan page of your own.. I hope this helps..

create a fitness workout for realtors, poll them first, then construct a workout that would work the muscles they use the most, and keep them in shape even if they dont have time

It's interesting to see the responses here...many of them wrong. It is not illegal to send unsolicited email in the U.S. CAN-SPAM made sure of that. Follow the rules, and you won't get in trouble. And for all we know, the folks on the list gave the realtor permission to share their contact info anyway.

Having said that, even though I'm pretty sure there are some realtors who are interested in fitness, the list is probably worthless. I wouldn't waste any time with it.

load it up in Aweber and send them some articles and see how many open it. If it is an old list then 50% of it should be dead. If not then just go and find some good products and mix them up with some articles and make a weekly campaign.
By the end of the week you will know what to do and what not to.

Take E. Brian Rose's advice and stop right there with all e-mail addresses except those of your personal customers or those who personally gave you THEIR OWN e-mail address.

I agree with Brian Maroevich, it's better to get people subscribe their selves than asking their e-mail addresses from other people. Those 65.000 might consider your e-mails as spam and this will cause damage to your IM business.

As an internet marketing Newbie, one of the first things I learnt is not to send out unsolicited emails to a list of potential customers who have not officially agreed to receive emails from you. Like a fair few here, I would agree with Brian Rose's advice. Best stay out of trouble and get your name blacklisted in the internet marketing business. Who knows, in the future, you may have a product that may interest these realtors, but they would never buy it from you as they were annoyed by the emails you sent them without permission in the past.

My advice - ditch the list.

You may send an email that requests action (e.g. direct them to your facebook page with a free ebook) and pick up those who respond and put them into your list.

So you won't miss any potential customers while building up a targeted list.

I think offering them new things with extensive offers is a good idea. Look dude its a great chance to impress the people who hate you
So try to monetize it properly.

Putting all the questionable legal issues aside, it's probably not worth much to you... because it's not likely a good match for your fitness business. Realtors, I'll bet, would be pretty non-responsive to the offers you'd be making.

Well I wouldn't send them any type of promotion until they confirmed that they want to be on your list otherwise that would count as spam.

Send the 65,000 realtors an email asking them if they want to receive information about being a successful realtor.

The people who say yes become your actual list. You can then monetize this list by promoting information related to real estate.

If you don't have any interest in real estate go and seek out information marketers in the real estate market and offer to sell your list to them.

If you send them emails, it's considered spam and you'd be violating the Can-Spam Act

If you did not obtain the opt-in yourself (and have the records to prove it) or purchase the leads and have been granted legal, proper authority to mail them, you're SOL. They're no good. It's not against CAN-SPAM but hosts don't play that game - your account will be shut down after you fail to produce records proving they opted in - and good luck trying to import a acquired list into a ESP.

Unless of course you like playing with fire. In which case you get yourself a russian server, multiple IPs, and blast it. But even then 65k emails is nothing
