Newbie Amazon/California Question

Hi Everyone:

I'm SEVERELY new to the internet marketing arena. I'm a California resident and I want to know if there's any way around the whole Amazon vs. California affiliate marketers thing.

Any insights will be GREATLY appreciated.

You can now be an affiliate in California, I believe. In October of last year, they allowed previous affiliates in California to be reinstated.

I would assume new California affiliates can also apply, but you may want to check.

The nexus tax will no longer even be an issue, because Amazon will begin collecting state sales tax from California residents beginning later this year, as part of an agreement reached last year with the state legislature. Amazon affiliates in California will not be impacted.

Not to be disrespectful, but I would advise people to take your advice for what it is worth - about 2 cents.

There are people making thousands of dollars per month with the Amazon affiliate program. It's not perfect, e.g. a short 24-hour cookie, but Amazon products convert well if you do good pre-selling, and there are lots of affiliate tools and widgets you can use on your site.

To just say "don't be an affiliate on Amazon" is rather shortsighted and naive, as the Amazon affiliate program can be a great money-maker for those who put in some effort.

By-the-way, I live in California, and I'm an affiliate. As mentioned in a previous post, Amazon reinstated California affiliates after reaching a deal with the legislature to begin collecting taxes on California purchases later this year.

If you live in a state that Amazon has dropped, you can incorporate as an LLC in a state that does have the Amazon affiliate program, and operate as a business out of that state. Three good states to incorporate as an LLC are Wyoming (my 1st recommendation), Nevada, and Delaware.

    1. California is not the only state where Amazon dumped its affiliates.
    2. Amazon is not the only company that won't accept affiliates from certain states.

I incorporated as an LLC in Delaware. It's not cheap. I haven't made much money yet. But I think it will be a good investment. Most of the costs are up front, and they have much, much lower business taxes than North Carolina does, or probably most anywhere else.
