Anyone Building a Self Development E-mail List?

Hi guys,

I've always thought self development would be a great niche to have a list in, especially if you're interested in the subject (like I am).

I imagine people on the list would be interested in self development, and self development reflects on a broad variety of things such as money-making, relationship forming, meditation, sexuality, LOA, brain enhancement - almost every major niche...

This gives a HUGE variety of products to recommend, am I right? A lot of $$$ to be made?

Does anyone here have a self development list that can confirm my predictions?

Thank you
Zannix

I don't have a self-dev list (I know you wanted replies from people who have one, sorry!) but I wanted to comment because I have been researching this lately and I have some input since nobody replied yet.
The hard part is, the areas you listed (money-making, relationship forming, meditation, sexuality etc...) would in reality all be different lists. It wouldn't be easy to cross promote those because they are going to appeal to very different people. Yes they all fall under self-dev, but think about someone who is searching the net for help getting a girlfriend. He would fall under the dating niche. What would it take to get him to join your list? A promise for free dating advice, or an ebook, etc... He isn't likely to join if you have a giveaway on goal setting, or meditation. Say he signs up for dating advice, and then later you promote a product on meditation. He will not be likely to go for it, and may leave the list. Likewise, if someone signs up for info on goal setting, how would you sell a relationship product? You may not even know if it is appealing to the correct gender. again, you would not convert well and face a lot of unsubscribing. Yes you may get a hit or two but it wouldn't work on a large scale.
This is the issue I was facing in deciding which way to go. It would be great to make a general self help site and just post whatever is on your mind (we are all interested in a variety of subjects) but think about it from your potential customers view. Would you want to be on a list that sent you products from all areas (self achievement, business, dating)?

That's true, but you're missing a point. If I get subs by paying for solo ads to people who already have huge lists of sel dev fans, then why not cross promote everything related to self dev?

Because when those subs joined the lists, they typically joined the lists through sites related to self growth which promise to deliver "life enhancing" newsletter, and that's not at all specific

I don't have a list yet, building one. I believe it can be very profitable, but it is just my approach that in order to prosper in that kind of field, you must be genuine (wanting to help others. As someone who is ON many personal development lists, I can sniff out the ones who are **just* in it for the money.)

I am a newbie, but I feel a very successful start and am in process of building my list.

AND I intend to be very successful moneterily

I answered because there were not many answers yet.

I was advised by some smart people to focus on one particular thing. I had a personal development blog but that was too unfocused, so I changed it to a creativity blog but that was still too unfocused, lol.

Maybe you should choose one particular aspect. I know some big personal development bloggers that are making money, but it's taking time to build it up. Of course if you're Zen Habits 2.0 then you'll be rich. If not...

It is a different mindset to the more traditional niched approach. But I am living proof that it works.

    Good luck,

    Will
