You can find some clients on craigslist, but here's some things that always helped me when I was searching for clients. Contract/Freelancing web design can be a tough gig, but you can make a really good run at everything locally. Contact all of the ad agencies/digital marketing agencies in town and ask them if they're looking for contractors (odds are they are). I'm a Copywriter, and I emailed 7 different agencies in town, and ALL of them were looking for freelancers...not kidding. That's a good start. Another good way to secure clients is by offering your services on a forum (especially niche-specific forums). When I was designing websites for people, I picked a niche (hunting/the outdoors) and I started posting my service on multiple forums. Before I knew it, I had more people asking for web design than I knew how to handle. You can apply the same idea when seeking out design work. One of my designer friends is in a band, and he loves making band posters. So, he did a few shows, networked with people. People loved his designs, and all of a sudden, he was offered multiple projects for band posters in the area.

Very good advice from wenzel777 - that's what I call thinking outside the box!

Kukelka, may I also suggest that you ask your friend to create a portfolio of his work and make it conspicuous in the forums that he participates in. For example this particular forum is one of the best places on earth to promote your friend's web designing skills. People here are actively looking forward to quality work and best of all they know what they are looking for. So this is a very targeted market for your friend.

Some of the ways that come to my mind include launching a WSO, advertising in the Warrior for Hire section and responding to requests from customers in the Warriors Looking to Hire You section (I am sorry if I didn't get the name of that part of the forum correct).

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers

Research your prospect see if they have a website?

Walk into their store and buy something.

If they don't have a website (and you know they don't), ask them.
"Hey do you have a website"

Their response... no I'm been meaning to put one together.

Oh, cool, well I love your store and I'm a web developer....blah blah blah (SOLD)

If they do have a website... and you know they do..

Hey, I tried to find your website online but couldn't find it in Google, just so you know I can help position your website for more traffic to create more sales if you are interested... bah blah baagd (SOLD)

Right here on warrior forum would be a good place to start as well. But there really are hundreds of places where you can show off your design work and even team up with script owners and offer your services to their buyers.

Have you tried your local paper? I know that seems to slip the minds of people, but many times doing local ads are best. My friend makes 80% of his income building sites and all of his leads from the local papers (penny savers and big paper of the area).

      Right on Mike,
I found my best customers this way. Many businesses and individuals looking for web services are not familiar or comfortable navigating online. So where is the first place these people look? A good old fashion newspaper. Try a weekly tabloid style paper that most communities have. You'll also find that these customers are also very receptive to other marketing services you might offer as well.

You could also try Adwords Display Network to promote your Web Design Service.

You will get leads easily with a little effort, in very short time.

Actually, there is no one 'best' way to get website and graphic design clients. I would use all the free classifieds, run cheap ads in local papers, solicit by phone or mail other advertising agencies for overflow work, offer specials, solicit existing website owners with old-style sites, and contribute to forums where your best client types visit.

    Great Conversation!! Many opinions.

Bottom line, history repeats itself. Selling this service is a B2B Sale with a sales cycle. No different than selling networks or other large purchases for a business.

In any event, I do a complete webinar on this. I show you proposal templates, my system and a whole bunch of stuff. This webinar is FREE.

    What I can say is..

First build your company website and add all the work as portfolio what you have done

Than bring traffic to your website, people who are looking for web designer they will contact you instead you contact them..

Create your base first than look for the customer or client..

Than you can promote every where, if you are focusing on this business 100% than you need to use all shorts of traffic and marketing to brand your company website..

    I hope this advice helps..

Yes, for a starter, it's really tough competition. Like in here for example, he must pay for advertise his service without guarantee that his threads will stay in page one, even for a day
But without action, there'll no orders come. So, above suggestions are worth to try! Thank you!

There's a whole bunch of ways.

    You could go on craigslist

You could contact the businesses via email after a google search

You could go into the businesses

    You could call them

You could put an ad in the paper

    You could do direct mail

There are heaps of options there.

You have to think about the costs involved with each, and the return you're going to get from them.

    Hope that helps!

      Hi,

I recently had an idea about finding clients. Look up web development firms and outsource building mobile websites to them. I've been browsing the forums for a couple of weeks and this seems like a big thing that a lot of big time web developers haven't gotten the chance to grab on to either due to not having the time to look into it to their clients not knowing anything about exploding popularity of smart phones. A lot of businesses are still in the stone ages.

Since the firms already have a list of clients, freelance mobile websites for half the price and outsource the work and have them upsell it for a 100%+ profit to their clients. It's a win-win for everybody.
