Prosense themes (several color variations) have worked well for me. It's the first one in this list of adsense-ready themes:

ProSense is good but many spammers use them, it might have some footprints and google MIGHT not like those themes...just a guess.

I started making custom themes with artisteer, making good CTR templates is not that hard.

Nothing to sell, only value to give and new knowledge to learn.

it has SOME minor shortcomings since i would like more features to "tweak" *before* the themes are generated - but nothing i cant "correct" afterwards by modding the templates by hand.
I still thinks its a superb tool.

As for other free themes, look at Personal Student Loans - Simple Tips on How to Find Them | Student Loan Consolidation

this theme is called "box tube" (should be a link in the footer, and i like this theme A LOT). I dont remember whether i modded this theme, but one CTR trick is to place a BIG adsense unit right into the beginning of the article/content itself, or after the title.

I also remember i used ProSense theme once and used it as a base to make a theme with artisteer using the same principle: 3 columns, one adsense unit in article, one column solely ads, and the column to the right the actual navigation unit. Let met see if i have an example.. well, kind of:

    Chicago Human Resources Jobs

The key is that people who use the menu have to navigate across the one column with the ads.
However, i also hear contradicting statements in regards to effective CTR templates, the reason is that its HIGHLY dependent on your site/content.

People say to avoid right side altogether, for example.
