Others are going to have there on opionion, but I say 500 or more.

I do alot of testing, I want bigger traffic numbers. Along time
back marketers would say 100, but traffic that is targeted is harder to
    get unless you buy it.

    I say go bigger numbers.

Really depends on the situation and how you are monetising the site. Generally as soon as I have the content setup I will monetise a site.

your site should be monetized before you start driving traffic otherwise your working backwards. all of my campaigns are monetized from day one, and in the next few days are getting anywhere from 250-1000 unique visitors a day and are already producing profits.

I wouldn't send traffic to a site unless it was setup for profits.

I usually monetized my websites with affiliate links even before getting any traffic. Never want to lost any potential buyers once it start getting visitors.

    Wrong thinking.

Focus on what you need to do to maximize conversions (head to Content marketing software for WordPress | Copyblogger, The Michel Fortin Blog | Michel Fortin on Copywriting, Marketing, Business, and Life or Craig Garber & kingofcopy.com).

Stop treating web visitors as mere statistics. They're people. They need to be enticed. If your website is worse than dog turd, a gazillion visitors won't convert. If it's optimized for conversions, you could have fantastic results with relatively low traffic levels.

Why not monetize from the beggining so you won't lose any potential buyers.

i prefer monetizing from beginning and if you are getting targeted visitors then 100 visits a day is good enough to earn a few $$ and if your visitors are non targeted then 10000 visits will not help you in earning .01 $

I don't really look at it from a site monetization standpoint...I think that is kinda the hard way to make money online.

What I focus on is building an email list using an enticing free offer, and then lead people down my sales funnel in order to earn money. This way, I am in control and don't really have to rely on Google to send massive amounts of traffic to my website each day just to make a few bucks.

I am absolutely NOT saying that my way is the only way, I'm simply stating what is currently working best for me!

Don't listen to everyone here claiming you need more than 500 and so on. What about the first weeks/months of 100 or 400 visitors that can be potential customers or clicks?

I run a website now where I started to monetize from day one with adsense and affiliate offers and that way I also started earning money from day one. Simple as that.

Ok, lets reveal some businessinformation that I normally like to keep secret.

Last month I had 745 uniqe visitors on one of my websites where 615 visits where targeted SEO traffic which is 66% of the total visits, the other 15% is referral (which I don't count as targeted traffic due to the sites it comes from) and the rest is direct traffic.

So of those 615 targeted visitors (a number some people mean is too low to start monetize) that I belive stands for 98% of clicks and 100% for affiliate customers I had 75 clicks on AdSense which generated $58 and also $18.33 from affiliate offers so a total $73.33 on only 615 visitors, that's not bad in the niche. I also got $28 in advertising fees so the total amont will be $101.33 last month from one of my sites that I don't work much on anymore.

My point here is even if you have 50 or 5000 visitors you should always start monetizing from day one no mather what people say to you, you only waste clicks and customers and leave more to your competition.

      Good luck!

There isn't really a good answer to your question. It really depends on the quality of your traffic and conversions. If you're a beginner, it might also be easier to start out making money with adsense over affiliate marketing since you don't actually have to make a sale to earn money from adsense.

It's never too early to start building an email list, but I wouldn't implement a monetization strategy until traffic is in the thousands.

The exception is when you can earn a substantial amount of revenue from a very small amount a visits. For instance, it's not uncommon for adsense ads in the finance/investing niche to pay out $10-15 per click.

That's just an exception to the rule, and the rule exists for a reason. What if that 50,000 global monthly searches you saw in AdWords Keyword Tool is completely wrong, and you can barely get 100 visits with a #1 ranking? Some niches are duds, and it pays to find out the traffic potential first before you put your time and energy into monetization.

So that's my rule of thumb. Have a monetization strategy from Day 1, but don't implement it until the niche proves itself.

If your website has single targeted traffic, that could also make you good profit. So quantity is a decisive matter and it never was. Concentrate on quality, that is more important than mere number!!

It can be easier to build a following when you use a "build first, monetize later" approach. Especially when the site relies on user-generated content. By holding off on monetization, you also free up time for other activities (making great content and getting found) during the most time- and labor-intensive part of the website's history.

By monetizing at the beginning, you can begin pulling in revenue immediately and reinvest that revenue into traffic-generation and other activities. Depending on your niche, the amount you make from early monetization could be substantial, and reinvestment only compounds it.

It really depends on the circumstances, or your own preference. I prefer the former approach out of laziness, but I can see the virtues of the latter approach.

As someone else said, there really isn't a hard and fast rule to this. When I learned this stuff (many years ago) I was told 100; however the reason behind this was that I was being taught to focus on driving traffic first and building a site that gets the traffic. If you get to focused on the money to begin with then you might lose focus on actually what you need to do to build a busy site.

All that said, you should be focused on the quality of traffic, but again that comes down what the aim of your website is.

All in all, the question has to many potential answers to answer properly, because we don't know what your goes are for the site/sites.

Some sites I might never actually monetize on the front end and make all my money on the back end through the list I build; while others I might monetize straight away from day one. Depends on my niche and my goals.

That answer probably didn't help you much, but it is the truth and realizing that might actually help you because it will help you to have a plan and strategy from day one, even before you build your site and that is what will dictate how and when you monetize.

I guess that's true if the traffic is targeted.

Oftentimes, when things go viral, the quality of the traffic is so low that your conversion rate takes a nose-dive. So you can get 20,000 visits in one day and still have the same number of conversions as you would on a day you get 2,000 visits.

What I am trying to say is that viral traffic sucks.

Personally I would start monetizing at 100 UVs. Before that i would just add good content and optimize my websites for better CTR.
