Call Center Chickens & Somebody's Selling YOUR Info

I got a call today from a call center girl who wanted to try to sell me coaching on making money online. I could hear hundreds of other calls in the background going on and answered each question honestly. I let her finish her spiel then asked her a question.

This girl was super rude when I asked who sold my phone number to her company. She would not give up the information.

I asked her why she was calling me and she insisted I requested the call. Uh no. I did not and I told her she was incorrect. She did not like that. I then repeated my question about who sold my information to her company. She got a "supervisor", (probably the guy sitting next to her who wasn't really a supervisor at all), he got on the phone and said they'd put me on the do not call list.

I thanked him for that and repeated my questions again, "Who sold you my phone number?", "I'd like to know the name of the company or person who hired you to call me please?"

He hung up on me.

Anyway, this type of "business" needs to be stopped. No wonder internet marketing has such a bad perception of being full of scammers. This call center is not helping our industry.

If you know who is doing this, please out them in this thread. It's scummy call centers like the one I just had displeasure of speaking with that could really damage someone who didn't understand what was going on.

Yikes, looks like the picked the wrong number to call that time! I haven't had the (il)fortune of being called by one of these yet but if I do i'll try my best to crack them too.

Was it MyPhoneRoom? They just called me about 5 minutes ago. I thought it was kind of funny this thread popped up at the same time.

I didn't let them get as far though. I just told them "I'm not interested, Thank you" and hung up.

This is certainly not good for the industry and I can say this from experience as I have been on the receiving end of the treatment during my early IM days. These con artists can end an internet marketing career even before it starts and what they don't realize is that there are times when $50 means a world to people.

Thanks for bringing this up Coach!

I have experienced something like this in the past.
They called and asked "How would I like to change my life"
What are my goals in life, and does becoming a millionaire something I'd consider?
    On and on and on...
Just like you I only had one question, who gave you my number?
They wouldn't answer my question and play dumb and answer a question with another.

There are 100 of these so without extra details it almost impossible to find out who it was.

What's hilarious about this is that they're calling someone of your caliber and knowledge if you want coaching......LMFAO ten times over......

I don't get many of these calls anymore, but when I do, I have a lot of fun with them. The last one that called me I told them I was definitely interested, but that I was in the middle of a cultish ritual and I was about to sacrific a rooster by cutting it's head off. I then asked them if they didn't mind holding for a bit......

.....The gentleman said "Sure, I'll hold".

I put the phone down so he could hear what I was doing. Then blasted some Gregorian Chant music and then began ranting some phony spell at the top of my lungs. I did this for about 3 minutes. When I picked up the receiver, all I could hear was a dial tone. Maybe my chant was a bit off that day? lol

That particular boiler room never called me again. Darn. I had another 15 scenarios I wanted to use on them......

I agree OP, it does give IM a bad rep. I haven't had a call like this in a while, but I have had fun with them in the past. If time permits, they can be viewed as a sales opportunity, or at least a sales exercise.

The person on the other end of the phone has a pretty narrow expectation of what kind of conversation they'll be dealing with. So when you aren't someone who's trying to fend off their sales script, but someone who's very cheerfully and aggressively trying to sell similar services to THEM, the call can be very entertaining.

"Oh wow are you lucky you called. I have an opportunity that's going to change YOUR life. Sick of spending your day cold-calling irritable, uninterested prospects? For an unbelievably small initial investment, I can help get you started on a path to putting your income on autopilot...and you will never have to make another uninvited call again...

        That's priceless!

I had one tell me they could get one of my sites on the first page of Google ( where it had been for over a year) I just kept giving him rope. It was entertaining and at the end I told him so, "thanks for the chuckle" click.

She never did get the name out of the program, she said her company name but I can't remember and it sounded made up to me.

Next time I will definitely see how long I can string them along though. She was just not a pleasant girl and it made me want to throttle her through the phone.

When I was asking who sold my number she started by trying to counter me with "Look are you interested or not because if not then this is a waste of my time." That annoyed me, she called me and tells me i'm wasting her time!

    LOL

All you need is the number the person called from. If you can't see it from your phone system you can get it from the phone company. Especially if you are on the do not call list, you can very easily put in a complaint and they will be in trouble.

This is very simple stuff you can do yourself. I've done it about 3 times. After the first time it took no more than 5 minutes because I saved the links, info, and etc. I suppose you are in the States? But it shouldn't be much different there.

Edit: If you are not on the do not call list, get on it quick unless you want some of these calls.

Out of college I worked for a financial market trading technical analysis company, got a list and started calling. First call was to John Murphy, pretty much a godfather of technical analysis. Ooops, guess I came across the list of Chartered Market Technicians. haha. Glad I didn't waste too much time with that list.

The only way to get revenge on a call center is to waste their time, when they ask if Mr XYZ is there, just say, 1 min, I will go get him, then put the phone down and check it again in 5 mins.

Throws them way off their game.

PPC-Coach - How was the accent of the caller? Maybe, from there, we can determine where they were calling from.

We had a big mis-selling scandal in the UK over payment protection insurance and sure enough lawyers were on it... Lots of cold calls and they never reveal who or where they get your details. They never remove your name from databases and hang up whenever you put them under pressure to reveal anything. It's really bad.

Now I just enjoy wasting their time by stringing them along or asking them to hold for as long as possible.

On a related note, I've been getting a TON of spam email lately in the "make money online" arena. The unsubscribe link is ALWAYS a fake. I've seen many starting with app.getresponce.com

It leads to an error. These are all spammers who have somehow added me to their lists in the last couple of weeks.
