I'm currently researching this type of thing, myself. I'd be curious to know if anyone has used BuddyPress: BuddyPress.org

      Mary,

I considered ol' buddypress but I feel that I want to stick to a site that I am going to like. I am thinking of just using a forum plugin (simple forum plugin) which allows registration but if there was a combination of a forum along with "membership"....rolled up into one... that would be more ideal.

Digital Access Pass (DAP) along with Simpleress has worked great for me. DAP also has an option to integrate members with vbulletin, if you needed a more complex forum solution.

Interesting. What are some of the vbulletin integration features DAP offers?

Database sharing. One username, one password. Members are automatically added and logged into the forum.

I would use s2 member pro wordpress plugin to create the membership side of the site and use any one of the number of wordpress forum plugins to create the forum. S2 member will allow you to protect the forum for members only

Hi, there. I'm the developer of Paid Memberships Pro, the 100% open source membership plugin for WordPress. You might want to consider it as another option.

PMPro is comparable to s2members and the other WP-specific premium plugins. You can grab it in the repository here:
WordPress › Paid Memberships Pro « WordPress Plugins

bbPress is a good plugin for forums in WordPress:
WordPress › bbPress « WordPress Plugins

Here is a plugin to install along side (requires setting a couple variables in the code) to lock down bbPress forums:

    Good luck.

Another way could be to create an internal PHP
script that posts signup details to the forum's
database. That way, there will be two
databases, one for the forum, and another for
    the member script.

It's a little hassle to create the synchronized
    login and logout sessions though.

IMHO there are two things you need to consider here:
    • which is more important to you, forum or blog?
    • what sort of features do you need from your forum? Do you need advanced forum features or only basic ones?
If forum is more important to you and you need some of those advanced forum features, perhaps you might want to consider using a forum script and then add a blog feature to it instead of the other way around.

One solution that pops up into mind as I'm writing this is:

Community Forum Software - IP.Board (no aff link)

With IP board you can easily add blog and monetization features to it using the following addons respectively:

IP.Blog - Integrated Blog Software For Your IP.Board Community
    IP.Nexus - Community eCommerce

The benefit of using products from the same company will reduce the possibility of script conflicts. I hope that helps.
