Help with number of search results?

Ok I'm researching keywords and checking out the first page of Google.

I need advice on how to decide on what keywords I should pick.
I know that you should pick keywords with at least 1000 searches a month, but when you check the keyword in the search engine there is obviously different amounts of results.

What amount of results is safe enough to compete against?

How can I get an idea that I can get my site on the first page?

Does it matter what number of results appear, and should I just get my backlinks and do SEO and let that take care of it.

Thanks.

How to decide on what keywords you should pick?
You should have a primary keyword with thousands of searches per month no matter how high the competition really is.
I personally, don't care about competition. As long as you know what you're doing.

SEO is not that hard. There are a lot of free guides on how to do it the correct way. Check out my signature for a free one.
"but when you check the keyword in the search engine there is obviously different amounts of results."
I'm not sure what you mean by that. the search engine results are the number of competing pages against your targeted keyword wheras the competition indicator in a keyword tool such as Google Adwords keyword tool is the number of bids by advertisers on the targeted keyword.
If you are into blogging, try a primary keyword with a good amount of keyword ideas so that they will become your secondary keywords which are the primary keywords for the other blog posts.

Be careful of your baklinking strategy since the last Google update may ignore backlinks from suspicious websites.

Social media websites like Facebook, YouTube, etc.. are very much appreciated by Google.Make a presence on such websites.

Diversify your links. Links on authority sites are very powerful after Google's Penguin last update. The higher the Page rank of those websites, the higher authority scale they have.

It's not necessary for your links to be on a high PR page though. It's enough to be on a page of a high PR domain.

When building backlinks, the anchor text might be 40-60% "Primary keyword" and the rest can be "scondary keyword(s)", "click here" "read more" etc..

Whether you're building links on your own or by outsourcing, following the tips above will guarantee your website to be on the first page of Google.

If you want to outsource it, I recommend you to search "Warriors for hire" and "WSO"
    section.

Thank you very much for the inspiration and advice. Wonderful.
I understand what the competition is in adwords and the what the results mean in the search engine. I saying that would you target keywords with say 8 million search results? Is there a number I should be looking for that i should never go over. Obviously it's advisable to go for the lowest amount of results possible but that's never a reality these days.

Your saying your not worried of competition, so you wouldn't care that a keyword has 22 million search results.

Can you guarantee that you can get your site on page one following the advice you gave me. I'm certainly not saying this is bad advice, every bit of it is 100% correct, but do you have proof that I can get my sites on page one with this method.

      You are welcome Aaron,
Yes, I'm 100% sure of what I just said. I wouldn't give anyone advices unless I've already followed them.

I do have some proofs, not only one.

Please check your inbox. That is one website of mine that has 35.5 million search results for its main keyword and its on Google page one.

Don't be afraid to start, just go with it.

      Hope that helps,
