Do I Pick A Hot Profitable Niche Or Something That I am Passionate About?

This is the sort of question that I get asked all the time and that I see asked on forums on a regular basis.

Should I target the most profitable niches or just ones I am passionate about?

Here are my thoughts and my reasons why. Hopefully my thoughts and ramblings my help a few people.

The truth is that, you could do either successfully. However, in an ideal world you would try and combine both.

So you would be looking for a hot, passionate, buying market that you either already know about or that you are really interested in.

Lot's of people teaching how to make money online will probably tell you to go for the hot buying market.

However, in my experience, this is one of the reasons why people don't stick at this long enough to make serious money.

It's one thing to know that there is lots of money to be made from selling products to do with curing diabetes, it is quite another to have the discipline it takes to research the topic properly and write about it consistently.

If you find it boring then you are going to be hating everyday you are working on your business . This is not healthy and it is a receipt for failure, for all but a few.

Unless you start making good money pretty quickly so that you can outsource your content, there is a good chance that you will lose interest and either move onto the next project or give up all together. This is a very common thing I see happening online.

Does this sound like you?

At the moment with all the jumping around and algorithm changes happening with Google if you are just starting out and you are not targeting a niche you are passionate about, or at least interested enough in to want to learn and research more about it, then you probably going to get discouraged very quickly and next week you will be posting on the forum about how you are giving up and it's all a scam and con and there is no money to be made online, or that the only people making money are those selling products on how to make money (which is total a lot of rubbish by the way).

My advice is that if you already have some experience at making money online and have a budget to outsource things like content, then entering any hot hungry niche, whether you are really interested in the topic or not, might work fine for you.

However, if you are new to this or if you haven't had lots of success I would start off by looking at what you know about already. Think about what your job is about. What have you been doing so far in your life or what are hobbies or interests that you have. Also think about things you enjoy now or would enjoy writing about.

Unless you have some money to begin with you are probably going to be doing a lot of the writing and content creation yourself at the start and it will make it easier if you already know about the topic so you will not have to do as much research.

That said, the topics you know about might not be suitable topics for various reasons, perhaps you have had enough of dealing with that topic in your life or day job and you want to write about something different or maybe that topic is just not profitable enough to be worth your while.

These are the types of questions that can only be answered after you have done some more research.

What you want to be doing is coming up with things that you are passionate about. If you are passionate about it then there is a chance that others might be passionate about it. If they are not, then that will be become clear while doing your research and you will have to think of something else.

It is a waste of time trying to create a business around a niche that nobody is passionate about or that nobody is buying products in.

You want to match your passionate niche with a problem. So if you have a passion for dogs as an example you need to explore potential problems that you can fix relating to dogs.

There's a lot more to it, but the above should give people that are just starting out, or those that aren't having much success currently, a good idea to get them started down a path that they can stick to and that will lead to them creating a profitable business that they will actually enjoy.

Passion is what will sail you through the challenges you will meet; when you invest money and it all goes down the drain passion will make you invest more, when you get the google slap passion will get you building new links again.

All the enterpreneurs that made it, where guided by passion; Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson...

      You said it sister...

That said, I don't think most people here are realistically looking at being the next Bill Gates, I think they just want some extra cash or to replace their day job, but the same thing applies, passion is what will see you through the dark times.

      p.s.

      love that profile picture.

Pick a profitable niche. Fall in love with where the profits are and don't "get married" to any particular business or niche.

If the niche you're passionate about is a profitable niche then hey that's just gravy.

I'm finding that the more interested I am in the niche, the more likely I am going to want to write a post about that niche. I'm also more likely to frequent forms in that niche because I want to not because I have to. I'm also more likely to frequent blogs and comment on those blogs if I have an interest in that niche. When I was focusing on a niche I thought could make me money but I had no interest in, IM became a second job instead of something that I enjoy doing in my spare time.

I like doing what I'm passionate about. I'm just lucky that what I am passionate about is something that will make me money both online and off I guess.

I am with you in theory (and with the not being married to a particular niche, I am with you 100%), but in practice this is where most people fall down in my opinion. In and ideal World people would be able to control there emotions and become passionate about whereever the money is, but in the real World, this is far from the truth.

This is why I teach to pick a few things you are passionate about, then check their profitability, and from there pick a winner.

Passion comes first and profitablity check comes second. That is the best forumla I have found to teach people to really be successful at this long term.

      You prove my point exactly.

It is crucial that there is money in the niche, but for most people that start out down this road, it is also crucial that they are interested in the niche. That is onless they are a professional writer or researcher that is able to switch off or switch into a zone and still write quality stufff, day after day, about topics they are not interested in.

Side note: If you aren't interested in SEO and you are just driving paid or other traffic, then this isn't as important.

      Thanks for this post, Carlton.

I do see 2 schools of thought in terms of how to approach niche selection. Concentrate on one, or do several THEN concentrate on the one(s) that stick.

I can see benefits for both, but you make an excellent point when it comes to not being able to stick with niches you're not interested in.

i agree, be passionate about the product as it will motivate you to jump the many hurldes you will encounter.

however, with that being said, money is the all time greatest motivation one ever needs to succeed...

You would think so wouldn't you?

But because if someone is new to this and they haven't seen any money yet, it is still a bit of a dream and they don't necessarily believe deep down that it can work - sure, they hope it will and they dream it will, but because they haven't seen it for themselves (unless they know someone personally who is doing it or who has done it), they still don't believe at a deep core level.

Hence, the money is just a dream and not a reality. The hard work of writing about a niche everyday that you aren't interested in is a reality and one that can very quickly have people thinking that the dream is just that, a dream the never will come true.

However, as I said, if they have some quick success that can all change because then they can see the "reality" of the money. But if the success doesn't happen quickly, the reality of the hating this online business quickly sets in.

Again, a lot of what people are saying works in theory but in the real World I have found that the reality of life and the effort it takes to really make money online, often far different from theory, and that is what I am interested in. That is what I try to focus on helping people to deal with.

The ideal way to go is to choose a niche that you are passionate about and is profitable. It can be done - if you are passionately knowledgable in an area - any area - you could build an online business around that.

Being passionate about your work will keep you going through the rough bits, because they will appear. If you are passionate as well as knowledgable about a subject then there is nothing that should you back. There are many ways to monetize any kind of website.

I have tried targeting hot niches which I am not passionate about
and I gotta to say it was a torture.

I never enjoyed every minute of it.

I now go for what I am passionate about and at the same time make
sure that it is a profitable niche.

So yeah, I really would go for passion.

Passion every time - this gig is hard and if you are not enjoying what you are doing then you are never going to stick at it, especially as it takes many months to even see results.

There's a cool section in the book Good to Great that discusses this very topic. I found a blog post (not mine) that explains it:

Backpack to Briefcase: Getting from Good to Great

Summary: do something that you enjoy, that you're very good at doing (even a "natural"), and something others will pay money to get.

My thoughts are passion first, profit second.

That's not saying go do something that you love that has ZERO business potential.

What I mean is, if something has REASONABLE business protential and you have true Pashion about it, you can make it very profitable.

I've seen a few posts here from amazon affiliates who will build a few sites at a time and they notice that some can generate its first sale much faster than others.

Taking that sort of shotgun approach, would it necessarily help you find that first sale faster? As opposed to toiling for months in your passion niche before you find your first sale.

I'm not saying to do 10 sites at once, and I see the advantage of concentrating on your passion niche will keep you focused. But it feels a bit like putting all of your time/eggs in one basket.

How do you guys feel about this "niche testing" strategy, so you can see where your efforts would get the best/easiest(I don't mean easy)/quickest (relatively) return?

Passion > hot niche- For people who have made money in at least one niche can probably more easily hit a niche they don't really care for for a two reasons: one, they know the money that can be made and already have that as a motivator as Carlton pointed out. Another reason though, Is most will have the niche they really like already set up and just do the hot niche on the side. So when they get seriously sick and tired of dealing with content on something they don't care about, they can go dive into what they do care about for an hour or two, and relight that fire to get them motivated again IMO.

    Well said Carlton.

Not having the passion is going to result in a lack of enthusiasm .. maybe not straight away but somewhere down the line.

And there's always the negative impact that it can have, if you don't enjoy working in that niche you'll start dodging your customers and some customers can pick up on the lack of interest.

I know some people can fake this passion, but not everyone can and just because you can doesn't mean you should.

I believe if you are passionate about something, you can find a way to become successful at it. The Internet is so vast and there are so many users that even low popularity niches should still have decent potential as long as they are not too competitive. And the less popular niches tend to have less competition anyway. So my vote is for a focus on your passons.

What I would do is make a list of a few general topics/niches you have a genuine interest in. Once you have that list, break it down into sub-topics. Once you have your sub-topic list, go seek out products/services that you can promote that relate to those topics.

If you can find profitable offerings, you've got a winner.
