What is a parked domain really worth?

I'm not talking about a site that used to be something and someone acquires it for a while until a new buyer can be found. I mean a site that never had traffic to start with.
I was a little curious and offered a few random sites like 25 bucks. Only one replied with a counter offer of $300, lol. This is a domain with 500 visitors last year(not even 2 per day).
And lest you think it's a good name, it wasn't. It involved turkeys and grilling and was twenty characters long.

So, what is a typical parked domain really worth? Do people normally get decent money off of this these things? Or is it a dream that keeps them from realistic?

Domain parking has really gone downhill over the past several years. At this day in age there are only a few really good parking companies (Bodis, RookMedia/DomainSponsor) and it's hard to make much money if the domain doesn't have traffic.

If you're talking about a non-premium domain that gets zero traffic it's probably being parked and not making anything, hoping someone will come and make them a reasonable offer to buy it ($25 isn't usually worth peoples time).. Overall, it's a tough business unless you have a good portfolio of names that get traffic. If you have premium domains then you can probably get type-in traffic as well, but I wouldn't bother with mediocre names that don't have any traffic.

I used SEDO a long back to park my unused domains, but presently forgotten them totally. Parking in these days is a waste of time to make money. Best answer is to sell the domain for a great price or else run a blog or something on it until you find a buyer.

I watched a video the other day of one of the leading domainers (I forgot his name) who said that the future of domain parking services is to offer the ability to automatically generate full multi-page Websites on your parked domain just by entering keywords and selecting predefined industries. Add some Facebook comments and voila you have a mini-site! I think it's actually a pretty good idea. Much better than just a plain old parking page with Google adsense ads on it. My two cents.

There are two separate issues here. First, what is the domain itself worth, and second, will that particular domain make any money being "parked".

The generic parking concept is very hard to make profitable, unless the domain gets a lot of type-in traffic. Search engines typically won't show parked pages in organic listings.

That being said, I've had mediocre domains make as much as $500 in a single day with a generic parked page. That was a few years ago.
