Default GetResponse - Aweber spam twist

It took me a while to catch on, but I now see a new spam method that is being employed. I call it opt-in spam.

Here's how it works. The spammer sets up an auto responder account, then uses the opt-in form to load your email address. You get a confirmation email from the auto responder. If you are like me, you sign up to many things and may forget what you requested to opt-in to. Some list names are not clear as well so you may well think that you signed up for it.

You verify the opt-in and whammo.. you are on the spammers list. Of course you can always opt out, but this is quite sneaky.

Hey Scott,

I got myself into this as well. It's annoying, isn't it? And the next thing you know, your email is shared and you suddenly start receiving IM related mails, saying like what you said, "You can always opt out by replying this mail. This is 100% not spam because we..."

Scratching head,
Dominic

Well, if they did that with a lot of people, they would all have the same IP on file, which would look suspicious. There are easier and more efficient ways if they want to get you on a list without permission, like importing into a script they run.

How do you know you didn't actually sign up and forget about it? You seem so sure that the list owner typed your info into a form. Maybe somebody else did it as a joke or mistyped their address.

Anyone can import an entire list into these services. The confirmation is sent to confirm that you want to be opted in.

It's the optin confirmation mail that protects you...

So stop clicking the ones you did not just optin to :-)

I've been having the same problem - not sure how to stop it? Give me a good way to stop the spammers doing this and I'll build it into my new autoresponder service?

Looking for an alternative to those really expensive autoresponder services out there?
