Some Requests for Product Creators

Hey product creators...

I'd like to make a few requests to make your products more user friendly:

PDFs - Despite many marketers thinking PDF was created to make reports, it's main purpose is to make documents printer friendly. Printers have different settings and using PDF makes sure that they print well across settings as well as on WIN, MAC, Linux, etc.

If you're going to have a report in PDF format, understand that many of us will want to print it to a hard copy...Therefore:

Do NOT create graphics that have a lot of black in the background. All you're doing is making us drain our black printer ink trying to print your report.

Same goes for footers that you place at the bottom of every page. If you make them a black back or dark backgound, you're wasting a ton of our ink if we want to print them out.

Instead, use a light gray or colors that mix colors like light purple or light greeen. Light colors use much less ink and a color like light purple with use a little red and a little blue, so we aren't using up just a single color. And a light gray will use much, much less black ink than black.

Also, if you're going to include a bunch of links, PDF probably isn't the format to use.

Videos - Please learn how to edit your videos and cut out the shots of you doing something that didn't work or taking 2 minutes to download something.

Both Camtasia and the FREE Window Movie Maker allow you to trim your videos. We don't need to sit through you waiting for something to happen when you can easily cut it out.

I'm really surprised at how many "paid for" video products creators obviously never edit their videos.

KipKay has a very popular channel on Youtube. Watch how he not only gives instructions on how to do something, but how concise his videos are...And he shows that you can be entertaining at the same time. It's because he spends some effort actually editing his videos.

Thank you...

I agree! (Although I do have a lot of links in my PDFs.) But especially about the videos - yeah, I don't have much patience for videos anyway - I'd rather scan text - but when they're slapped up without editing I lose my mind.

Regarding printing out pdf files on printer - if somebody prints that much investing in a laser printer would be a good idea. Otherwise I also agree

I use a laser color printer and agree with Kurt 100%. If anything if affects me worse as I have Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, AND an imaging drum which are all pretty costly.

I've seen "cover" graphcs in PDF with a black background that would take half an inkjet cartridge to print.

How much a person prints really isn't the point. The point is for digital product creators to look out for their customers. Must customers probably don't even think about printing out a page that's basically all black and what it will do to their black ink levels.

I know enough to skip that page when I select to print out, but again, that isn't the point. I also know enough not to use solid black in the first place so I don't waste my customers' ink. Granted, most of them probably aren't even aware I'm doing this for them, but I'm aware.

Kurt, that is an important contribution.

It is also a factor, which isn't used by those, who don't perceive themselves into the shoes of their audience. However, the customer satisfaction and loyalty may depend on this too.

        Thank you,

Kurt, perfectly reasonable request. It was timely for someone to bring up the subject. I agree with you in both respects.

    Thank you,

Really good tips, Kurt. I run a totally paper-free business as a VAC (virtual assistant)so it's extremely rare that I print anything. I thought people were quick to copy and paste anyway rather than print, but I guess it's a matter of preference.

Recently completed a product with a tremendous amount of black in it and the reviews of it have been great so far (plus I love the look of it). This one, I won't touch as far as revising the design, but I'll definitely take these points into consideration from now on.

It's a good point Kurt. I don't use a lot of black graphics in my tutorial pdfs but I do change the size so that each page is readable on a screen.

I am thinking that I should add 'print friendly' pdfs to my products. Give the option of both.

    Thanks for the input.

Cool point Kurt. I never thought that the consumers worry about printing stuff and ink cost. Would definitely keep this point in mind for my upcoming product

Great points, Kurt. Here's another one...

If you are going to offer a file for download, name it something meaningful. You might know that 'sstffb.pdf' is your "Six Simple Tips for Facebook" when you are creating it. I might even know what it is for a few minutes after downloading it.

But in a few hours to days or weeks later when I'm looking for it? Fuhgeddaboutit...

And rather than spending the time to open and scan every file, I'm likely to just go out and look for something new.

On the other hand, if I find 'SixSimpleTipsForFacebook'? Winner, winner, chicken dinner! You get another chance to impress me and earn my business...

Good point John...It's also a good time to brand yourself. For example:
        6TipsForFB-JohnMcCabe.

Now they know exactly what the file is and you get branding every time they scroll through their download folder. (I've just started doing this)

Another suggestion, when you zip a folder, don't zip every single sub folder. I hate having to unzip 15 folders, espcially when it doesn't even save any file space or download size.

Quit being lazy. Unzip all the folders, then zip only the main folder and save your each and every one of your customers the hassle.
