How Someone Got My Expiring Domain Before You

Yesterday I was contacted by someone wanting one of my domains I was letting expire. He didn't want to compete in a public auction for the domain, so he

- Offered to pay the GoDaddy redemption fee,

- Offered me a fair amount for the domain,

- Provided instructions for transferring the domain in GoDaddy, with his account number and email address.

He had dome his homework and knew exactly how many days I had left to recover the domain, where I had it registered, etc.

A few hours later I had my money and he had his domain. He could be flipping this for a quick profit himself, but what do I care.

Bottom line: this guy got a domain valuable to him or made some quick bucks because he was knowledgeable and made it extremely easy to sell it.

Sounds like a win/win all the way around. It's very hard to be the first to get it once it has expired and redemption is over. Sometimes a registrar will snap it up before anyone else can.

Those serious about grabbing a name about to drop will backorder it through name drop watcher equipped with high speed systems to detect the instant a name becomes available, Pool.com Namejet.com typically charge $60 for a name with no competeting bidders.

Lots of pre-drop sales are made at the Godaddy auction, allowing the original creation date of the domain name to be preserved. Transfer is more tricky or impossible if you wait until it's close to expiration.

Hmmm...it sounds like you made out like a bandit. Good for you! You were fortunate to have dealt with a honest, legitimate buyer too.

I just started buying domains on GoDaddy auctions. I think I might flip one of them. Will I have to wait for a period of time before the domain can be transferred? What if it's just a push?
