Anyone noticing their rankings in Google bouncing around more in the last day or so?

My site is always towards the top of the first page and late yesterday, it totally left Google for a time. This morning, it's on the third page. Hopefully it will jump right back up where it was before.

This seems to happen about once or twice a year. Is this what you see?

Thanks,

AF

  • I've noticed that jumping around thing since last summer. My own site is relatively stable, but my local business promotions need several backlinks to keep at least one of them on top!

You guys need more back links to sustain the position. This is normal, just keep building more links.

I have had two reported incidents (both approximately one hour intervals) where Google's search engine results were scrambled.......the first time this happened--my site went from #3 to #300 (for 60 minutes) then reappeared at #2.

Both times, I found out about it because I got these panicky phone calls from other web masters who were experiencing the same grief.

I love being the one to calm them down......explain the Google Dance to their newbie ears.....LOL

Back to the original ranking on Page 1. It took one day. Eventually my site reappeared on Google, on Page 3. It worked its way to Page 2 in the morning and then by afternoon it was back in the top 3 of the first page.

Weird. I'm just glad it didn't last weeks....which happened once I think.

Some of my top ranking keywords have dived in the last few days. I have a site that is a year old - but I switched the domain about 2 months back. I used 301 redirects so thought I was ok. I'm ranking fine for the new keywords I'm optimising but one of my P1 terms has now fallen to P195!

I'm going to try and reoptimise it in case it is because of the new domain - but wondered if there had been some sort of Google Dance in the last week?

That's what I think...every once in a while they (Google) do something and sites get shuffled around for a few days. Mine went away for a day, then came right back to where it was. This happens at least once a year to me. Usually, the site comes back fairly quick, but once or twice it left for a week or so.

It's just scary when it happens because you don't know how long it will last or really how to fix it. I think the best thing is wait for a while to see if your sites come back. Then if it's too long, you can try some type of SEO changes or something.

There was a huge update in january, they copnstantly update. So any tricks you're using will be caught out eventually.

Just stick to good content and good backlinks, you should be fine long term.

I have read in places that the google shuffle is becoming a lot more regular than it once was ... that for some people they are in different positions at different times of the day ... also that quite often different results are coming from different datacenters ... i don't know exactly how it all works, but this is what I have heard.

When google updates it's algorithm the SERPS change. However, this isn't instant, Google rolls out updates across it's datacenters at different times you're right.

Just keep an eye on your SERPS and give it a good 48 hours before you start to panic.
