Is it best for each product you promote to have it's own separate site?

What is the most effective way to sell a product? Is it best for each product to have it's own domain? Will you get better ranking and response rate. Or is it just as effective to sell a product through a sub domain page or a sub folder?

The product I am promoting will be downloaded from the site at a cost of $7. I feel the focus on the product will be better if the whole site is built around it. SEO methods and other promotional activities like article marketing might also be more effective if there is only one product on the site.

Of course there is the drawback of the extra cost, i.e I could promote 20 products, with one product for each page if I had them in folders or sub domains. I would not have to buy a separate domain name for each product and also not pay the extra cost of hosting another domain.

What do you guys feel is the best way to go? One product per domain or 20 on one domain with each in separate folders?

What do you guys think?

One on each domain. If the cost of a single domain makes up a significant proportion of the total revenue you can expect from promoting a product on it, then I'd have thought it was hardly worth doing.

Yes the cost is certainly a major disadvantage. The best way, will be to test it out on a product to see if the extra cost is worthwhile, this is what I will be doing.

If the products are in different niche I would suggest get a separate domain for each. But if they are related then you don't have to.

When your domain is related to your product it looks more professional and people will be able to relate your service to the domain.

for example: let's say I went online to search for info about soccer and I came across a website about soccer. If the domain name is related it will be easier for me to remember the website and to even tell my friends about it.

I also think it will help your SEO and thus your ranks in the search engines.

Then again I am human so I could be wrong

Yes, I was thinking along the same lines as well surely it must help seo because you can really focus everything on the domain I will definitely consider doing this with some products.

I was recently thinking about the same thing and I agree with yesacpow.

It the products are closely related they can share the same domain.

For example--If you have a book that teaches people how to plant orange trees than you can have additional books that teach how to plant lemon, grapefruit, lime, and tangerine trees.

Besides giving people other options that might interest them you get more leverage over your seo , PPC and other traffic building strategies.

It also gives you the advantage of upselling, or cross selling if you prefer, your other products which means a bigger sale in the end. That is something that is not as easy when everything is on its own domain name.

I agree on that. One domain for a range of related products. It's good for branding too.

In the end it all comes down to how you market your products. Similar products can be sold off one domain, and a number of marketers do this.

If you're not sure how well the products will sell and your budget is tight, selling them from one domain is probably the way to go.

If a product takes off and is a good seller you should consider buying a good domain for it.

You're talking about promoting 20 products - you need to get one up and running and successful before you promote 20. Create the site, promote it, get some sales coming in...and if you CAN'T get enough sales to justify the $7 cost of registering a domain name and a monthly hosting fee, you need to figure out what you are doing wrong and refine your process before moving on to promoting more products.

As you probably know, you only need to pay one hosting fee - I have Bluehost and I have seven domains so far hosted on one account. Many hosting companies these days offer "unlimited" addon domains - probably not literally unlimited, but I bet you could put that few dozen on there.

So each new product and site represents $7-10 investment of a domain name, and then of course you have to either design the minisite or get someone to do it for you.

I agree with the one domain with related products. But watch how you give them the choices.

Sometimes too many choices will turn the buyer away.
