Huh? You can't create a youtube acct w/anything other than your real name?

I created a new YT acct. Filled in my 1st name + last name, then filled in the box where the username goes -- THAT's what I expected mu user name to be.

Nope.

When I uploaded a vid, I noticed my user name is my 1st and last name.

Huh?

I figured it out -- but they sure don't make it obvious how to do it!

As I recall, the previous times I have done this, it was much more obvious how/where to choose a YT user name!

i did not come across such thing.there is separate option for the username you need.i can create the account on the username i want

The account is created in your name / email name; however, you can change the displayed name for the youtube channel

Yes, you can create youtube account with any name you wish. There is no such restriction on your account name.
