Default cloaking links

Hi,Sorry to be so stupid but please put me right. I thought that I had followed the advice correctly, but obviously NOT!I have used my software to cloak the link. This I have saved to my "recommends" file as an html. I have uploaded this to my public_html folder using Filezilla. I have then gone to my browser & entered my domain name / recommends / cloaked link & all I get is an error page!!!Please help in very simple, idiot proof, steps to help me with this.Thank you Nick

buy whatever is for sale of course!

Seriously, you`ve created a file which cloaks the link ...

filename.html

you`ve placed it into recommends folder ...

recommends/filename.html

now place your sitename in front and that is the link

http://www.yoursite.com/recommends/filename.html

If you can`t bring up the redirect and be redirected ...
closely check all spelling ... very closely ... only takes
one typo for it to fail.

What software are you using?

As an addition to the post Yikes just made, check for capitalization also. If you used capital letters anywhere that could cause a problem for it to show up also.

hey Nick

what software are you using??

check out the instruction videos on our site - it's for a different program, but may be able to help you all the same - it shows you how to handle the ftp program...

Hey Nick,

I offer a free piece of software that actually uses the same format, but you never have to upload any extra html files, or write any code. The initial upload and install takes about two minutes, and after that it's extremely simple and easy to use.

Check it out here. Simple Link Cloaker The easiest link cloaker available. No HTML. No coding. Just right.

Again, it's free and you don't even need to sign up for a newsletter... so you can't lose

P.S. There's a video on the page to teach you how to use the software.

If you are using a javascript or meta tag refresh, that's not a good idea. You should use a php or perl 301 redirect. I have written software for this and can set it up in about 15 minutes. Maintenance is easy and it stores your click tracks in a mysql database.

The reason you want to do it as a 301 redirect is so you can promote the url and have control of the future life of the link. ie: if you do a javascript or meta refresh redirect, google will forever hate the link.

Also, you probably want to host your own script, not use a service. If the service goes down for any reason, or decides to hijack your links - you're toast.

If you want to do internet marketing as a serious income - start using 301 redirects that capture your links and store it in your own database as soon as you can.

I do not know of other services that do this, but there is a free word press plugin if you are short on funds. There is a wordpress plugin called "pretty links" that tracks what clicks you get, and allows to make redirects on your blog. It's my favorite redirect plugin besides the ones I wrote for myself

Contact me if you want me to set it up for you correctly. One thing to watch out for is the default "pretty frame bar" which you have to manually remove on each link you create, or else it will frame your target page with pretty url's advertisement.

James, Yes please I certainly would be interested in having you set me up a 301 re-direct. How much & what do we do now?

Nick

Sorry - I know it has been said before but the most likely explanation is that there IS some sort of typo within the link, or the html file is just not there - can you give the link so that we can see?

Paul,

Thanks for your reply. As an example I`ve tried to cloak my link for viral ebooks. So the link should be nick-messenger.com/recommends/viralbook.html
but it isn`t working

One of the files you have in that directory is named "viralbook.php.htm" - not "viralbook.html"

Problem there!
