Ideas to make money with 'freemium'

Hello All,

For the last few months my team has been selling our cyber security software through a monthly subscription ($.4.95/mo). We have been successful, we have over 900 members but are looking to grow 10X

We would like to offer a lite free version of the software in order to get more downloads, and have our premium version still cost $4.95/mo for higher protection and all the good stuff.

We were considering embedding some form of advertising into our free version as well as email marketing to up-sell our free members to the become paid members.

Any thoughts? or experience inserting ads into software?

    Yes, you should do that.

    You could look at at the App Store. Nowadays, most top grossing apps is doing freemium strategy.

    They put a banner/ pop-up/ links on the free app. So people, who have used the free version, can be led to the paid app to get more from the app.

    Remember, if you do a freemium model you will have to provide support for these users. I am not saying not to do it, but it can add to your work load. It can be very hard to get a good CPC on ads. Also, converting free users to paid can be hard. A successful model that I have seen implemented is to charge a low fee for a base account and then have premium accounts. This way you have already qualified that you have an interested buyer who has given you billing information. With your service being $4.95 per month for premium, you could do something like $10 for the year.

    The usual way to generate income with this method is to either build your list and upsell or send them to CPA offers and bank as much as you can.

    Sounds like a good idea. There are plenty of free download sites, get it on all of them, and get lots of reviews about it, backlinks, etc.
