BLEH! Social networking methods can get you traffic fast but dont expect to make a dime off of it. SEO is absolutely the best way to get traffic and it doesnt have to take long to get it if you know what to do.

      Hi Eric,

I'm second on PPC first, because if you make it wisely, it brings the most targeted traffic for you right away. Naturally it costs you some money. If you wanna go to the cheap way then make social networking.

Besides you need to consider the future and make SEO for it. And don't forget the article marketing what brings long term traffic in years coming.

      Good luck,

      Sandor

SEO takes long before you start to get decent traffic. You may not get any results no matter how hard you try. It's a different skill, IMHO.

PPC is a good way to burn your wallet. Don't even try it before mastering a dedicated book like Perry Marshall's definitive guide. Can't believe how other fellow marketers suggest PPC to a newbie.

Video marketing and article marketing bring the most qualified traffic within a short timeframe.

I have my site urls in my signature of all my emails that go out, and I also cross link all my sites.

    I use social networks.

A lot of my hits come from Facebook, Twitter, and other other blogs I post on.

I use google alerts to find specific things that interest me, go to many of them and post, putting my link in my signature.

And I check my google analytics to see where the most are coming from.

      Totally agree here.

I tested this on one blog, did not do seo of any kind and then did the social networking and wow, amazing traffic within 24 hours.

I know this was said tongue in cheek Tom, but... hmm...

It could actually work. The traffic may not be targeted or even commerce-friendly, but if you had a site that is very general-topic like Yahoo.com and you're making money off of adsense etc, this just might rake in some good income for a few hours standing around... get a few kids to stand at some other busy spots for a few bucks, and your traffic generation problems might be a thing of the past. I may yet try this, it might even work for niche-specific site. Thanks

    Hi Eric,

If you're starting from scratch, try article marketing. Check out bummarketingmethod.com for a decent guide.

You'll learn a lot about marketing in general if you start this way, and it will stand you in good stead for going into PPC and other stuff.

If you go into PPC right off the bat you'll probably lose a bunch of cash before you make any.

    Hope that's useful.

    David

It depends on your budget and resources. The fastest way is PPC but it's the most expensive. SE Traffic is really the best but requires time and knowledge of SEO of which there are only a few that have mastered it.

For Quick and Cheap try Article Marketing. Probably the most cost effective, but requires lots of effort on your part.

      Hope this helps.

You never actually said what kind of traffic you are looking for - local, geographic restricted, national or global. SEO can be time consuming depending on how broad an area you are trying to cover and what niche. You might find out it's easier to start out in a smaller area(s) and work out.

SEO doesn't ahve to be time consuming if you do the right keyword research and competition analysis. Check out Google's Keyword Tool. If you spend a little time with it figuring your keyword phrases then finding what kind of competition there is for those search terms, you can really dominate quickly (I use Webspy attached to Firefox for the latter).

There are great articles and resources that can give you the SEO basics. SEObook.com has some great advice also.

** I am not affiliated with any of these that I suggested. These are just some of the tools I use to get decent rankings for my customers)

The best way is to stop trying to do it all yourself. You're competing against companies and marketers with a team of SEO people. That's like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

That's just my opinion though. I admit that I'm completely biased with the launch of our website promotion service today at 12pm ET. For a reasonable price, we'll do all the stuff listed above for you and much more...

If I were you I would use ppc to get instant traffic and social networking/videos/articles/forums/press releases etc for the long term.

I have got sales and traffic quickly using videos before but you need to make sure that you don't get distracted and assume the best way is out there and is better and undiscovered, sometimes we already know but we wish there was something cheaper faster or easier!

If you aren't already doing ppc, videos, articles and press releases then focus on ppc first and then get started on the rest...

    Good Luck:-)

The best way is through Comment posting, here are some SEO tips for beginners:

    You should know this first

    • what a meta tag is and how to use them
    • what keywords are
    • how many keywords to use
    • where keywords should be placed and why
    • what title tags are
    • what alt tags are
    • what header tags are
    • what a sitemap is and how to use the different kinds
    • why links can help or hurt you
    • why commenting is a good thing

SEO is probably the best. But try PPC thru yahoo, ask, or msn. I've found that MSN has more serious buyers with less competition/less cost than the big G.
Also sign up with a couple of internet marketing groups at yahoo and google. When you get accepted to groups always reply with your web link.

If your just starting out online I don't recommend PPC. Yes its fast and targeted, but first you need to read up about it or else you'll just waste money.

What I do recommend are free things that get good response such as articles marketing, starting a blog, posting to hubpages, using twitter, create a myspace account.

You can also try things like safelists and traffic exchanges. I actually got started using safelists, traffic exchanges, and articles and did very well my first 6 months. I then branched out to other things when I had the money.

A few places I recommend are...

    startxchange.com
    buzzle.com

One of the ways I got traffic to my sites was being a contributor to Giveaway events. If you don't have a product you can use MRR or PLR items to get started. Be sure and check the license text to see if the product can be given away. Do a Google search for giveaway + contributors. I first signed up as just a member to giveaway events and downloaded some of the products. You'll start getting emails about new giveaways. Jump on those quickly as you can probably still sign up as a contributor.

Make sure you have your site setup on the back-end for upsells, this includes your Thank You page.

You need an autoresponder to set up your automatic followups. Have between 7 and 10 followups loaded into your autoresponder. Give the subscriber more free and good information in the first 3 followups. Then in the remainder of followups begin to make your offers.

You probably will not make many, if any, sales from the visitor on their first visit to your site from the giveaway. That's why the automatic followups are needed. I usually gleam about 150 - 200 subscribers from each giveaway.

As others have suggested, I find social bookmarking to very useful directly with social marker.com as it has a very comprehensive list of sites to submit to. It does take a while, granted, but it is very thorough. The pinging service feed shark has been extremely useful for me as well because of its quick submit function and the various options available to get your webpage indexed quickly!

Some great suggestions so far, I found some useful sources that work continuously that require a bit of momentum are article writing, social bookmarking, and even a bit of Yahoo Answers really works well when properly implemented, ie. no spamming. List building is always a targeted source and very effective, as well as the PPC source of Adwords when targeting non used long tail keywords. Hope this asissts!

WOW ! What a massive amount of advice.

There is so much good advice in this thread. You really should get traffic after trying these methods.

However, Have you considered how much traffic you really need and what type of traffic?

Really - you don't need much traffic at all - All you need is targeted traffic.

You can get this by searching for the places where you potential customer hangs around.

IMHO the best way to get traffic to your website is to be #1 in Google for your specific keyword phrase(s).

To improve your chances of getting to #1 in Google your keywords should have high search volumes and low competition.

To make it worthwhile getting to #1 in Google, your keywords should also have commercial value (ie. is the searcher likely to buy something when they type in those keywords).

Once you have keywords that meet the criteria above, optimize your website for those keywords (SEO).

Then start building backlinks, backlinks, backlinks. There are fast, slow, good and bad ways to do this also.

All things going well, you should then start noticing increased traffic and a rise towards #1 in Google (although anywhere in the top 5 is OK).

Article marketing will give you some instant FREE traffic... as long as you have good content in your articles and use a strong resource box to get them to click on your link.

SEO takes a while... but if you do good keyword research you can get your site ranked high. I created a couple wordpress sites that got ranked fairly quickly, but search engines love wodpress (with a few clever plugins).

PPC is another instant traffic method, but you must have MONEY. I've used Adwords, Miva, 7Search, Adbrite, and a couple others... I've found 7Search to have the lowest prices per click... but Adwords is the deFacto king of PPC... I mean you ARE advertising to the biggest search engine.

    Hope that helps

It's not doing only one thing, you have to do combination of different methods do drive quality traffic to your website like : Starrting a blog , submitting articles, ping marketing, social bookmarking, building squidoo lenses, may be PPC (be careful ), press realesess, video marketing and etc. You can also ousourse some or all of these the right way.
