Advice Needed: Starting out

I am currently a computer science student, and like many other students the economy can get pretty tight. I just started my summer vacation and have set a goal of making a passive/semi-passive income of 1000$/month. Unfortunately I am having trouble of finding a place to start in this jungle of information. What strategies are successful nowadays, what courses provide the best information, should one do them in a combination, I have no idea. What I do have is a strong computer background, so setting up websites, using web based metrics, coding and even heavy statistics and math would cause little problems as soon as i know where to start.

I am currently thinking about these possible strategies and ideas:

1) Seeing if a Twitter/FB promotion directly to affiliate products is possible.

2) Using the new Affiliorama 3.0 to promote affiliate products through my own website.

3) License and translate good selling e-books to Norwegian and promote them here.

4) If nr 1 or 2 is a success, get and promote clients locally.

If my goal is 1000usd/month of passive income, are these strategies good starting points or are there any better opportunities to consider? What courses here on TB would you recommend? What other places do you use for inspiration, the warrior forum?

Your advice is truly appreciated.

You need to promote a product that offers a high commission. You have to have velocity plus demand to earn money fast. That means focus on the best converting, highest-paying offers only and copy the strategy used by the leaders.

    Hi,

I would forget #1 in the way you're mentioning it, you can't use social networks (in general, not just these two) to sell directly that's not what they're meant for. If you want to drive traffic through social networks, then you need good content that people would be interested into, and you must build your reputation. Then your drive traffic from the social networks to your content, which can then be used in different ways - you can use your content to promote related offers, you can do CPC / CPA, you can build a list etc...
As for finding stuff to promote there are lots of possibilities. You should find all you need right here on the forum.

Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

What about using Pinterest? I've been hearing a lot of buzz about how much they're making.

Full disclosure: I'm just as green as OP.

One of the best investments you can make straight away is to pay for the War Room membership on here.

There is a ton of information in there, both in the threads and the free WSO's that are released to the more "exclusive" audience. For a lifetime membership, the fee is tiny.

Get in there and read some of the longer threads that have some priceless (and timeless) information in them.

I would suggest getting an internet maketing coach as soon as you can. I made all the difference in the world for me. Find someone affordable that you can relate to. You'll get good ideas on what will work from their standpoint. Follow them through and go from there. It will get you off to a much faster start.

Here's one you can try for a dollar: www.roydickan.com/redirct/ultimateim.

Thanks for the replies. What are in your opinion the best current ways to find mosthosts recommended products, high commission, high paying and high converting?
I would be interested in getting a coach, but the one linked to seemed a bit dodgy, are there any sites helping to connect aspiring and seasoned IM?

If anyone knows of further strategies that would fit the CS student/passive income model I would be very happy to hear from you.

Before you go and get a coach spend some time looking on this forum there is a wealth of knowlegde here which is free...............I didn't know about this forum and spent a load money on mentoring and courses which didn't really get me anywhere. find somehting you enjoy doing and then research it on here. So for example looking at how to promote affiliate products.
Have you considered conatcting the seller sof good ebooks and offering to translate them for a fee?

Yeah before you get a coach, hang around for a bit. theres a ton of great information on here that you wouldn't even be able to get from a coach.

The biggest thing is that once you find something you need to be able to stick with it. if you give up too soon then the money isn't going to come rolling in .

Is there a gap in the market for option 3?

If there are products that do well in the English speaking markets, they may excel in the Norwegian marketplace too.

If you license, rather than use PLR, then you have the added bonus of being able to advertise, "bestseller in US market" etc.

Plus, the product authors would be able, and most likely willing to help with your marketing plan.

Personally I’m not a fan of either of the options. Building a list is the best way to insure a long term passive income.

Wow, I am getting blown away by all the great responses here om the forum. I will go get a war room membership, research some e-books and read up on coaches and list building over the next week. I am sure i will have some questions along the way, but now i know where to go.

You have already mentioned option #2: Affilorama, which is a great place to start. If you can afford it, try to get Affiloblueprint as well. This is seriously one of the most comprehensive and effective courses on affiliate marketing to date.

Best you stay focused on this course once you get started, so that you can see some results. Try to master one form of promotion first such as SEO before going over to the others.

I have been in affiliate marketing for about 2 months now, and did the wrong thing of spending money on information marketing courses, while I could have just got all the information in YouTube! Of course, I had no idea how to design websites or write product reviews, but over time this will all become easier. Its all about sticking with a plan - only then will you see results.

I joined Russell Brunson's programme for a dollar, and had made $30 in 2 weeks. Of course, you will find that to make money, you will have to spend money, and that you will probably spend more than you earn in the first few months. Trust me, when you make that first sale, your determination will only multiply.

My advice (as a newbie myself) - read a lot of free articles, sign up to a lot of free programmes and watch videos on youtube. You will learn a ton, and you may even realise what you are great at - affiliate marketing or product creation, writing articles and product reviews etc etc etc....

Its great you have a computer science background, and creating a great site is probably the best way to start. Choose your clickbank products carefully, as many many people are promoting the high converting ones. Option 1 is out of the questions - Facebook outright rejects squeeze pages and affiliate links. I have tried...and failed.

You may not make a $1000 in the start - this is going to take some time. Keep at it, and you will reap the rewards. I wish you all the best :-).

    Peace.

      Hey,

All I did was search for whatever topic it was I wanted to learn about. Try and look at people who have posted many videos - maybe subscribe to their channel. Take a look at my site - the videos section - and watch the first video, it might help. The guy is an internet coach, and his program is really good, and cheap. I learnt a lot of stuff from him and from the warrior forum.

I searched for terms like 'make money with clickbank', 'basics of affiliate marketing' and pretty much any other keywords that came into mind. It has been watching many hours of footage, but you will learn a ton in a short time.

If all you want to make is $1,000 a month you would just need to make 1 sale of the $15k formula the funnel I use. That is a pretty low goal. Why not increase it? It pays 100% commission and the product sales for $1,000. Can you see yourself making one sale a month?

I wouldn't suggest you to promote products on a "small area" better try to sell products in English so that more people will be able to buy them.

Twitter and Facebook can only bring you traffic but the convention of this traffic to sales is not that high. Try to find some more ways to promote your affiliate products.

Since you are skilled in computers maybe you can start a web design business, or even computer repair. Think of how you can benefit someone needing your service, then put a price to it.

You would want to use Facebook and social sites but not to promote directly. Promote on Free advertisement sites.

Drive traffic to your phone number or email, and conduct business a a genuine business man. Keep your word, carry yourself with a professional manor, do your duty, and collect your money.

This allows you to keep most of your money, in which you can re invest a portion of it into supplies or marketing to expand your business. Keep turning over a large profit, keep expense to a minimum and you will find yourself climbing a rope to success.

    Hi Modsiw,

I think being a computer science student you are bound to have some core technical skills which although straightforward for you would add quite a lot of value to less experinced people.

I would build a report (25 - 30 pages) on setting up a website and give that away for free to build a list. You can set up a page to give the report away and maybe on the thankyou page you can have a video tutorial on another aspect of web set up and at the end of the video just mention a link below which could be an affiliate link.

Put a different tutorial video on you tube and others and drive the traffic back to your sign up page.

It's a start in the right direction.

    Best of luck

Thanks for all this great feedback! I am currently researching and reading up on e-book writing, aiming for a well written one by the end of this summer. WF and Vikky´s youtube strategies give a lot of broad quality info.

I will take Alohatom´s council and learning the basic website/domain researcher and optimization form Affiliorama 3, I can work long hours np. At the end i may look at some coaches that can take me the last extra mile.

I will be looking into the other tips about amazon, 15k formula and freelancing along the way. Interesting stuff!

  • There is a lot of opportunity being self employed with your qualifications. Your doing the right thing by asking for advice, as this will allow you to turn a profit as quickly as possible.

I am a student as well and my online income made it possible to work around my classes and earn a decent income.

    My advice:

    1) Find a problem and develop a solution - Need ideas? Send me a PM.
    2) Build your list
    3) Market your product by having affiliates promote it for you
    4) Don't be afraid to invest money in your business (ask long as you can afford it)
    5) When the time is right outsource your weaknesses and/or what takes up most of your time that could be better spent focusing on what your strength is.
    6) Get a mentor or a coach.

Not sure but can tell you how I got started.

I had a few ideas for websites but didn't have money to hire a web designer to make the sites for me so I made them myself. And I'm glad I did, because it gave me the skills I needed to make websites. After seeing that the sites I had created weren't generating that much money, needing to pay bills, and having little success finding a job I started making websites for other people on a friend's suggestion. I didn't make a lot of money at first (and still don't make a ton now) but I make enough to make a living.

I think it's totally possible to make $1000/mo offering services like web design, or SEO, or other web or computer related services to people who don't have the time or skill to do it themselves.

What I did to get started was simple. I just started advertising my services in the classifieds for free. I know you might not like the idea of offering your services for free, but it's good if you're just starting out and you have no experience. Plus, you can always upsell something to your free clients to make some cash. That's what I did and for me it was like getting paid to learn a trade. Usually people have to pay to learn a trade but I was getting paid to learn my trade and build experience in the field.

Only downside to offering services that you have to do yourself is that your limited to the amount of work you can take on and therefore to the amount of money you can make, but it pays the bills. What I really want is to start a website that becomes huge like facebook or twitter or youtube then sell it for millions and millions of dollars! That's what I call a retirement plan lol

    Wishing you all the best.

I was just thinking, given your computer science background, it might be worth you creating a product that helps newbie's create websites at home using opensource software such as Kompozer - if that is something you are good at? You could make a few videos and ask the warriors what they think - I am sure you will get some great feedback. Work on it and over time you will have a brilliant product. Include information on how to get the website that is created with the software on the first page of google - or include that as a free report/guide. I reckon with your background, this is going to be a piece of cake for you....

Hi. I'm new to this as well but there seem to be a couple of things I can add.
    1) Unless you are seriously lucky then IM is unlikely to be making $1000 for you by the end of your vacation. You need a strategy and build on it and that can take a little time. I'm not confident that I have come across someone who has actually made significant profit ($1000+ per month) quickly (from nothing) and can prove it with a reputation to show for it.
    2) While the forum represents a huge resource with massive amounts of expertise available on it, if you are not already very familiar with the various forums, conversations and subject threads I have found it to be quite labrynthine and sifting/filtering it to identify clear specific strategies to follow is a bit like trying to do a thousand piece jigsaw puzzle with the same picture on both sides but rotated 90 degrees. Possibly because I didn't start off completely familiar with all the jargon and accronymns. I have opted to follow Dean Holland as a mentor (at least on his 4 week starter course). Dean has quite an impressive track record and reputation and was trained by some of the IM leaders/pioneers.
    3) One other thing. You mentioned about translating ebooks into Norwegian. Why Norwegian particularly? Is it a language you know well? I've come across at least one IMer who lives in Norway and is trying to break into the global market because Norway is so small and niche. I suspect that market may not represent the sort of market you need to achieve your target of $1000/month.

Hope that helps, (but looking back over it - it seems a little negative really). :-( It wasn't intended to be. Good luck. You never know. :-)
