Warrioooorrrs.... Come out to playyyy - quick question for ya?

Howdy Warriors

anyone seen that film? Bit of a cult film when I was a kid. That not the questions btw

Actually I was just wondering how you all deal with your procrastination. I've been seeing a lot of folks who've commented its their biggest issue and largest stumbling block.

I am working on a formula and a couple of strategies for this problem but thought I'd ask if you've won the battle yourself or are still looking for a solution.

Some people write a list of everything, then label the essentials with A, the like to get done with B and everything is C. Do all the A's, work on the B's and get around to the C's when they are done.

Others find it easier just to allocate a portion of time to the different areas of life eg, X hours to home paperwork, X hours to IM, X hours to networking and research

What do you do to ensure you get stuff one?

Gotta love the Warriors!

I used to think that but actually from research its the single most debilitating problem for all Internet Marketers and as a small business, its certainly something to prioritize

A lot of IMers don't go to the Mind Warrior section and don't see that as important but those who are successful will have resolved the issue of procrastination before they get their big pay offs

My thoughts though, each to their own

          Hey Cali

Would have no idea how to move it and still think that if the topic is the sort of thing corporate business, super affiliates & most IMers talk about, it should be in the main discussion

Procrastination doesn't just affect your business, it can kill your business.

Your activities begin with your mindset, your mindset affects the activities and your activities dictate your income.

I think most Warriors like to talk about money and this affects how well they can make that happen

However, that said, if a Mod decides to move this I won't worry

I still struggle with procrastination big time -- but here are a couple of things that help me:
    1) publicly announced due dates -- i.e. I'm going to launch xyz on date aaa
    2) making to-do list then just restraining myself to only do things on the list
    3) turning off email and browsing for defined periods of work
    4) going through each big item on my to-do list and identifying very specific small "next step" and then doing it

      Great answer Leo

Making announcements makes you accountable and for many that forces them to get tunnel vision and only see the 'end goal'

To Do lists come in all shapes and sizes and some people find those overwhelming. In our business we can have lists longer than a shopping receipt so we need to find a way to segment those.

Definitely - my fav, turn off the social media distractions, emails only in the afternoon and more of that time management

      thanks for that

Yep,I remember watching The Warriors for the first time when it came out in the early
1980's (showing my age here.)Groundbreaking film in it's portrayal of violence but seems really tame compared to some of the films released now.

Anyway, back to the question.....I start the day with a to do list, take a break after every hour worked and then ask myself "Has what I've done in the last hour contributed towards my business?"
Invariably the answer is yes,but if not I kick myself up the a**e and make ammends in the following hour of work.

I coach people to achieve success and the biggest thing that stops people is procrastination. I call it the stealer of time, money and dreams.
I have the reasons why I want to make a change in my life next to my computer so every time I log on it's there.
Planning is also a good way so look at the time you have in the week and write a list of all the things you need to achieve on your project. Then schedule time in your calendar and realistically show your tasks on each day. If this doesn't work then just make sure you use the time you have set aside and go through each task until it's done.
For me it's about being focused on the "why" or the benfits of getting the project done.
Also reward yourself for the action you've taken.

I have ADD, and I'm a huge procrastinator (comes with the territory), so it's hard to just sit down and do it, but I simply plan my day out and force myself to do it all (usually at the end). I end up getting it done though.

I like to play with the timeline Noona when I'm coaching - and a little bit of 'chunking' up and down helps too

I have a family of ADHD, ADD & Dyslexia (& Dyscalcula) so I'm well used to this subject and know more about it than my son's Pediatrician - I call them out all the time on their lack of knowledge.

I have to chunk my thoughts up to the big goal before chunking it back down into sections. I find this helps with my kids too. And I like to remind them that having a 'different style of learning' can be a good thing (if you learn to ignore the cultural and education systems that suggest otherwise

I tend to perform better when my back is against the wall. Thus for me, procrastination is a big problem, in that I allow myself to get stressed the longer I take to finish things, but being stressed forces me to act, although, sometimes it back-fires.

I write down a general goal of what I have to do that day and how much time I have to work. I have to make it fit or work as fast as I can.

I usually go and find someplace quiet, possibly a coffee shop to work at.

I once heard someone say "If your business were a person and they asked you at the end of every day how you had helped them today, what would you say?". That has stayed with me for years...

On a more practical note, I'm just getting back into using Action Machine Pro as a ticking "bomb" in the background, forcing me to get on with the list and nothing else.

Have won a lot of the battles, but the war rages on...

The one I have to really watch for is confusing 'planning' with 'stalling'. When I find myself re-drawing a mind map for the third time or editing an action plan only I will see for spelling and grammar, I know I've crossed the line.

The question that starts me on the road to progress again is "what am I getting out of stalling that is better than what I would get out of moving forward?"

For many, serious procrastination stems from the subconscious seeking to protect us from something or to deliver a result it thinks we really want. Get the underlying reason for procrastinating out in the light and examine it, and you begin reprogramming your subconscious to deliver what you really want.

The opposite is when you experience what athletes call "the zone." That feeling of exhilaration and power when everything lines up and nothing can stop you.

            John I love your reflections!

The ego is responsible for 'managing' our fears - as you say, in order to protect us - and the instructions come from our conscious thoughts but often we don't realise the significance

When we consciously put out a number of thoughts about what we cannot do, what could go wrong, what people might think, negative, negative, negative... we are programming our mind to expect and associate our actions with 'danger'!

Of course our mind will protect us and help us to 'avoid' the terrible impending doom that awaits us - because that's just what we told it to expect

I've learned that my actions/thoughts are a reflection of what went before. If I get really stuck I do some visualisation and imagine the 'fear' as a person or object

I ask my unconscious (the person/object) - what its 'purpose' is and what's its protecting me from

You'd be amazed what stuff you get from that and once the unconscious become conscious, you can definiately do something to change it

Both John Reese & Frank Kern speak about reaching that point, as do many people who become very successful. When it matters the most we tend to push through our fears and ego and reach for our goal.

In NLP terms Karen you are talking about setting a goal by 'moving away from something you don't want' and the is the driver. It is possible to also succeed by moving 'towards' what you do want. But what most people are not good at, is making that image truly compelling - as compelling as the idea of moving away from failure or hard times.

It can be done though and often entrepreneurs begin to realise this after their first major success - even if like in Frank Kerns experience that is a matter of $2500, that was his emotional breakthrough

There is hope for us all

That's a great method Replenish - by setting a goal you define your outcome and move aside all the distractions as they don't fit with the object of your of your desire - and quietness is also good.

When I feel too lazy to get something done, I decide to procastinate and get it done the following day. But immediately after, I push myself to type down the schedule for next day. This way, I realize that I already have a HEAP of work to do and that procastination would not really be a good idea!
