How Pinterest.com Grew - email invitations?

I've did a research on how pinterest grew and can't seem to find any legitimate information and answer to my questions. Anyone knows or gots an idea? I've seen many similar sites to that have started about the same time as pinterest did but only 1 of them made it? Could it be because of email invitations? I know in marketing little things like that could make a huge difference. Please share your opinion.

For Pinterest, I think it was the concept and execution. It is a totally addictive pasttime and a simple interface.

The 'invite' membership wasn't really used to limit access (I got mine sent from the site within hours of applying for my account) but (I think) more to create buzz.

Very similar to how facebook rolled out slowly across universities first and created a buzz about having access- then a 'rumour' it would open to the public.

When a user does any interaction, it automatically posts on a user's feed on facebook, and users will see it pop up on their news feed. If they click it they can see the site directly

The buzz about Pinterest is happened because:
They have a very unique concept and beautiful site.

This two factors make a lot of people willing to share it to their friends. Also maybe they use Press Release also, so the site is covered by a lot of medias. This coverage create huge buzz all around the world.
