    You can actually.

Amazon allow this, if you are promoting one of the products as an affiliate - they don't have a problem with you using their images.

I talked to an affiliate manager about it before, he said it was cool.

Ryan is right. Amazon allow you to use their images if you are promoting that product. Here is a quote from the Amazon Associates Glossary page.
Associates may download an image or use the text description of the product.
I'm sure they will have a fair use poilcy but if you are using the image to promote the item then I doubt they will have a problem with it.

    "Spen":

You can even create an image only affiliate link with Amazon's link generator. That way, they host the image as well and it's a simple copy and paste the code on your website.

Ryanmilligan, so you are saying that you were told specifically that it's okay to use images from the product detail page, and not just from the section for creating links?

I've always downloaded images from the product detail page because they are bigger and nicer, but now and then hear things about it being against Amazon's TOS. I wish the TOS was more specific.

So, if it's really okay, I'll be happy to know that.

In any event, I've learned (finally) that with an image from the link section, I can enlarge it once it's on my wordpress site with the image editor. But I still like the other images better.

I'm pretty sure Amazon actually gives you the image when you create the aff link.

This is true, sodevious, but those images are not very good. Too small, I would say. I understand what Spen is trying to verify. I am interested in this question myself. From what I found so far, it is not a problem with Amazon, but I am still checking details.

        Tessa,

I found this in the API Agreement,
""(n) You will not store or cache Product Advertising Content consisting of an image, but you may store a link to Product Advertising Content consisting of an image for up to 24 hours. You may store other Product Advertising Content that does not consist of images for caching purposes for up to 24 hours, but if you do so you must immediately thereafter refresh and re-display the Product Advertising Content by making a call to the Product Advertising API or retrieving a new Data Feed and refreshing the Product Advertising Content on your application immediately thereafter.""

What did you find in your research?

        UPDATE 9.28.2012...
I decided to go to the source ... and there was an actual DELAY because the support staff didnt feel they could give a correct answer without more research.

edited without changing intent of information ..

I am sorry, after checking further into your question about storing images locally, I confirmed that it is not allowed for any time period.

I thank you for your patience as I verified that you have the correct answer.

        Did I solve your problem?

So there it is , pictures/images can be used, but not stored locally! Mentioned elsewhere, if you are using the API to populate the images they automatically will (should) only be Amazon images as they take pains not to distribute customer images, at least not without consent.
Effectively this means that each page hit will be getting a refresh from Amazon for images. I had asked the question because I had considered 'modifying' the images to use them on something similar to a slideshow and the images would have to be local.

I have been storing the amazon images I am using on my server for years.
I usually crop some of the images and therefore need to have the image on my server. Since I usually have several images of the product on my site I don't link back to amazon on every image (just one). Am I breaking the TOS? What are you guys doing? And how can Amazon know that I haven't received the images I am using directly from the manufacturer or someone else?

As long as you are using the images provided by amazon and not customer images then you're fine

Yes, but rename it and re-size it so you get credit for original content. So take the largest image you can get and re-size it to a smaller size and then rename it and upload it for maximum benefit.

Yes, you can use photos from Amazon.com if you are an affiliate; however, you CANNOT use customer images. They are property of the customer, not Amazon, so you cannot use them.

    Just so you know!

Excellent reminder. Sometimes it's hard to tell which is which, so be careful...

For the main product image, I'm pretty sure it is allowed.
However, I want to highlight that OP asked about images in 'Product description section'.

I have been using the images in product desc section for years in my sites and there is no problem so far with that but I'm interested to know Amazon's take on this.

Amazon's tools have it built in so that you can use their images on your sites!

I've always stored images locally although I don't remember ever seeing anything in black and white that says it's ok to do so. This isn't the only thing that Amazon is vague about. They are a bit like the tax man, they won't explicitly state anything because then it would be easier for people to use a workaround. Doing it this way means it's easier for them to change the rules without actually stating what the rules are, if that makes sense.
