Building a physical product niche site

Hi guys,

I am new to the community so first of all thanks for existing! It is very exciting to be around so many like-minded people. I am looking forward to a flourishing exchange of ideas!

As the title of this post advocates, this post is about starting a website, selling a niche physical product.

I am at the very beginning of my career as an internet entrepreneur and try to choose the best model to start my first internet business. It looks like a lot of people building niche sites make money either through affiliations, ads or information products.

While I see the advantage of information products and their money-making potential, I want to make good money earlier, before I have that authority and experience (I do not see myself producing any info product right now) and I do not see it happening with affiliations and ads. I aim at $2500 within 12 months. Here is my question:

Why waste customers you sold on a product to companies like Amazon.com and only earn little commission when you can (re)sell your own product making much more money?

There are enough niche products out there which are bought in Asia for little bucks and sold here much more expensive. Why not aim to be one of those businesses with a high Google ranking? You can do drop-shipping and no need to worry about fulfillment. Is this not a realistic business model to aim at?

I much appreciate your comments.

Both become affiliate or dropshipping have each pros and cons.

    For example:
If you are an affiliate, you don't need to worry about customer service. You just need to send the traffic.

If you are a dropshipper, you could get more profit but you also need to handle more, such as customer service, payment system, customer's trust, branding, etc.

To make choice of this two options, you just need to answer this question: "What do you like the most?"
Just follow your passion, follow your heart.

      Welcome to the Warrior Forum.

Your answer is "Horses for Courses"

1.If you are an experienced businessman then dropshipping physical products is a good model. But there are many more hoops to jump through to get started.

      2. If you are new to business and internet marketing then get your feet wet in affiliate marketing with Amazon or Commision Junction.

      Good Luck

First of all thanks for the replies.

As I understand the biggest problem is not that it is more difficult to build a strong web presence when choosing reselling instead of affiliate marketing but managing the actual product.

What have been your biggest grinds when it comes to drop-shipping? Can you list a few? FYI, I plan to hire a virtual assistant to assist me in customer service, etc.

        Thanks

I understand your logic but I would rather have a system that does all of the work for me and can make me insane profit percentages with everything being online.

I think the biggest grinds of drop-shipping and affiliate marketing are the same: Traffic

How do you get the buyer's traffic?
How to make your site found by people?

If you have mastered the traffic getting skill, you will be succeed in every online business.

  • Selling physical products is a great idea. I highly recommend it, but it does have drawbacks compared to info products. You need storage, inventory ect.. You need to ship it - and that gets expensive.

Of course you could have all of that taken care of for you, but you still need customers.

If you want money in the fastest way possible then in my humble opinion you should build your list. That list will benefit you when you sell your own product. Until then promote affiliate programs to your list. You can make some serious commissions and it is so darn easy.

If you want to start a dropshipping site or a site where you sell your products, it will take time which includes investment, site planning, payment processing setup, website design, contacting suppliers/dropshippers and much more.. The profits will definitely be much higher than an affiliate site but the time and investment will also be much higher.

The affiliate site just needs $5 investment on domain name & hosting, traffic and an affiliate account.

What you are planning certainly can be effective. BUT, think that you will be competing with Amazon and others, and they have spent millions learning exactly how to sell things EXTREMELY well. So, there might be a lot to learn before you can compete with them effectively.

Both can be profitable. Check out Jim Cockrum. I've seen him promote a course about building an Amazon business selling physical products. You'd find overstock items and the like.

Yes, Amazon's commissions are relatively low but they do an excellent job at up selling in their checkout process. People also know and trust Amazon and that helps with conversions.

Good luck with whatever route you choose. And, remember, if you never quit you'll never fail.

      Great stuff guys!

The following is what I extract from the previous posts about how to build a successful nice product selling site:

      1. You need traffic, one way or the other
      2. First, test things out with affiliate marketing before investing too much time and money
      3. Once you have a sound list of customers then introduce your own products

Would you agree to this rough process outline or do you have anything to add?

Regarding the competition from Amazon and eBay I mainly think two things:
      1. Those who visit those vendors know already what products solve their problem/fulfill their need. If one can manage to build a website that catches visitors in the stage where they have a problem/need but not yet know how to solve/fulfill it and you give them the solution, you’re gold.

      2. They sell everything and that’s not necessarily a good thing. Sure they have great trust but still people perceive things who only do one thing as better than a thing that does several things (in this case Amazon) because it just must be so if something focuses on doing only one thing well…

Therefore, if you can establish yourself as an authority on one particular field and focus on people who are still looking for some sort of solution -> give them the solution with your website content -> slowly get customers, build a good reputation -> then you can start offering your own product and they will buy

What do you think about that?

Is there anything else that I am missing here?
