5 tips to increase traffic

Hey guys,

A lot of people I work with just starting out in the IM game tend to forget that it's the page which ranks for a keyword, not the site. This is how we compete against the whales of the internet such as wikipedia - we beat them page by page, not site by site (where we wouldn't stand a chance)

5 tips to increase traffic - fast

1/ Have the best content around - there are millions of useless, low grade pages out there competing with older, smarter, better established sites.

2/ Add content on a regular basis - 1 article per week if you can, more if you can afford it. Generally larger sites (>100 pages) do better than smaller ones.

3/ Use keywords in your images, file names, headings, subheadings, lists and even use synonyms

4/ Include the niche in the domain. Choose carefully, it's your virtual real-estate. Use .com if you can, without hyphens and not too long a string. Domains, like house, age well, so make sure it's the right one.

5/ Use directories for back links. For a good list of directories check out strongestlinks.com/directories.php

Yep, it works, images sometime even pull traffic into a linked secondary page to where the image is

3/ Don't forget titles

4/ If the dot com isn't available, go for the org before the net.

Some great additions by mouseffects there, much appreciated. Very much agree that a consistent quantity of quality content is very important in your success in marketing definitely. Once you get into a constant routine in generating content is makes things so much easier! Nice post!

I totally agree. With a blog and some research for keywords without competition Google will throw free traffic at you. Add a little page rank to your site and its amazing how many pages you can beat out with some good content.

Good list to start.

Updating your point (3) slightly:

3/ Use keywords in your images, file names, headings (H1, H2 tags), subheadings, lists and even use synonyms

Adding on:
6/ Have keywords in your footer and banner alt tags as well

7/ Adding relevant comments to related blog post with links back to your site.

Where did you get that from? I was always under the impression that .net was right after .com?

Those are great tips. But the most important factor would still be off-page optimization, ie backlinking. So, go out and grab as many backlinks as you can. That's how the whole ranking game goes.

But be careful not to cross the line of link spamming. There are white hat ways to do so. Black hat won't last long. Here's some methods

1. Social bookmarking

2. Forum posting

3. Blog comment posting

4. Article marketing

5. Link exchanges, 1 way or 3 way linking

6. Directory submission (less helpful nowadays)

7. Blogging

One more tip, if you are posting a blog, try to encourage visitors to leave a comment!

That add alot of good quality content, and best of all search engine loves them!
